Is Matcha Good For You? These Factors Can Help Determine That

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves, traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. Unlike regular green tea, where leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha is consumed whole, giving it a higher concentration of nutrients. It is considered healthy due to its rich content of antioxidants, especially catechins like EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), and its natural caffeine and L-theanine blend that offers sustained energy without the jitters. Keep reading as we share a list of benefits of matcha and how to keep it healthy.
10 healthy benefits of matcha
1. Rich in antioxidants
Matcha is packed with powerful antioxidants, particularly catechins, which help neutralise free radicals in the body. This can reduce oxidative stress and lower the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease.
2. Boosts brain function
Thanks to its unique combination of caffeine and L-theanine, matcha enhances cognitive functions like memory, focus, and reaction time, all while promoting calmness without drowsiness.
3. Supports weight loss
Matcha can aid fat oxidation and increase metabolism. Its thermogenic properties help the body burn calories more efficiently, making it a popular addition to weight loss regimens.
4. Enhances heart health
Regular matcha intake may help reduce LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, support healthy blood pressure, and improve overall cardiovascular function, thereby lowering the risk of heart disease.
5. Improves liver function
Studies suggest that matcha can help protect the liver from damage and may reduce the risk of liver disease by lowering enzyme levels linked to liver strain.
6. Promotes detoxification
Because it is made from shade-grown tea leaves, matcha contains high levels of chlorophyll, a compound known to aid the body in detoxifying heavy metals and harmful chemicals.
7. Strengthens the immune system
Matcha's antioxidants, vitamins (especially vitamin C), and minerals support immune defence by helping the body fight off infections and inflammation more effectively.
8. Stabilises blood sugar levels
Some research shows that the catechins in matcha may improve insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar levels, making it beneficial for those managing diabetes or blood sugar spikes.
9. Improves skin health
Matcha's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties can help reduce acne, improve skin tone, and protect against UV damage, promoting clearer, healthier skin.
10. Enhances mood and reduces stress
The L-theanine in matcha increases alpha brain wave activity, which induces a state of relaxation and well-being, making it a natural stress reliever and mood enhancer.
Factors that ensure matcha is healthy
Ceremonial-grade matcha is made from the youngest leaves and is the purest and richest in nutrients. Culinary-grade matcha is lower in quality and best for cooking.
Organic, shade-grown matcha from Japan tends to be free from pesticides and heavy metals.
Pure matcha powder without added sugars, flavours, or preservatives is healthiest.
Matcha is sensitive to light, air, and heat. Storing it in an airtight, opaque container in the fridge helps preserve its nutrients.
Avoid boiling water as it can destroy catechins. Use water that is around 70–80°C (158–176°F) to retain maximum health benefits.
Keep these points in mind to ensure you consume matcha that is healthy for you.

Satono Reve settling in well as Royal Ascot support continues

The sprinter is in the care of Noriyuki Hori, who is a leading handler in his homeland and will have his first runner at the Royal meeting when his six-year-old lines up in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in the hands of top international jockey Joao Moreira. Satono Reve had the assistance of Ryan Moore as he underwent his final preparations for his Ascot assignment on Newmarket's July course on Wednesday morning, with Hori happy with how his contender has settled into his temporary surroundings in British racing's heartland. 'After arriving from Hong Kong, Satono Reve had some time to recover before steadily building up his training,' said Hori. 'We completed his final gallop before the race – a five-furlong piece on the July course at Newmarket, ridden by Ryan Moore. 'Although it's a different environment from what he's used to, he's been coming along well thanks to the warm support of James Horton, his team and everyone involved.' Ride on-board SATONO REVE as Ryan Moore puts the star Japanese sprinter through his paces at Newmarket ahead of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at #RoyalAscot next Saturday #サトノレーヴ | #ロイヤルアスコット — Ascot Racecourse (@Ascot) June 12, 2025 There have been 10 previous attempts to find the Royal Ascot scoresheet by Japanese challengers, but Satono Reve brings top-class form to the table having enjoyed Grade One success at home and also twice chasing home Hong Kong sprint sensation Ka Ying Rising. His odds for the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes have tumbled in recent days, as the case for his challenge has become more evident, with Paddy Power making him a 6-1 chance for the final Group One of the meeting on Saturday week. Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield said: 'There's been a bit of interest for the Japanese raider and while it's hard to equate winning a Grade One at Chukyo with the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, the volume we've seen has forced us into evasive action and the Hori-trained runner is into 6-1.'

Japan's 400,000-follower ‘Insta-gran' dies aged 97

In this picture taken on January 16, 2018, Kimiko Nishimoto, dressed in a dog costume, gestures during a self photoshoot outside her house in the western Japanese city of Kumamoto. Behrouz Mehri/ AFP TOKYO — A Japanese great-grandmother with 400,000 Instagram followers who shot to fame for her goofy self-portraits after taking up photography aged 72 has died, her son said on Thursday. Kimiko Nishimoto, who died this week at the age of 97, told AFP in a 2018 interview that "you can take photos no matter how old you get." "Wherever it is, in your house, outside, or in your bed, you can do it. That is the nice thing about a camera," she said. Dubbed the "selfie queen" by Japanese media, Nishimoto's posts showed her in various candid poses—from riding a broom like Harry Potter to imitating an off-duty sumo wrestler on their fifth beer of the night. "Our mother always created her work with a smile," a post from her son Kazutami Nishimoto said on her Instagram account. "We are deeply grateful to everyone who visited her photography exhibitions held across the country, to those who shared warm words of encouragement through Instagram... and to all who supported her warmly throughout her journey." Nishimoto's son teaches photography classes, which his mother started taking in retirement. "Though she began photography at the age of 72, she was blessed with countless encounters, which enriched this third chapter of her life tremendously," he said. Nishimoto appeared on national television as her online following grew and was interviewed by major news outlets. But her more out-there visual scenarios were also the cause of some confusion over the years. One snap—showing her wrapped in a garbage bag, as if she had been discarded—drew criticism from people who didn't know she was involved in its set-up. "It's not like ideas just suddenly pop into my head but wherever I go I think about what it would be fun to dress up as in that place," she said in 2018. — Agence France-Presse
