Real ID travel requirement goes in effect May 7: What Coloradans should know
DENVER (KDVR) — The countdown is on for Colorado travelers. On May 7, passengers will need a Real ID symbol on their driver's license or other form of acceptable identification to get through airport security.
Those without proper identification may face delays, additional screening, or not being allowed into the security checkpoint.
Layover, delayed flight at DIA? Unique things to see in every concourse
FOX31 found many travelers at Denver International Airport had questions about Real ID requirements.
'I don't know what is it for,' said one concerned airline passenger.
The Real ID Act is the result of the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the federal government set standards for issuing identification.
A Transportation Security Administration spokesperson told FOX31 that Colorado, which has been compliant with the act since 2013, maintains a high compliance rate.
The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles has examples of a Real ID license, which features a star on the front in the upper corner, on its website.
To be eligible to receive a Real ID, applicants must provide proof of identity, lawful presence, Colorado residency and a social security number, even if you transfer your Real ID from another state.
The DMV provides identification requirement charts and a new to Colorado page for more information.
Comparisons give perspective of just how big the Denver International Airport is
The TSA website states that a temporary driver's license is not an acceptable form of identification but you can use other forms of ID.
A TSA spokesperson told FOX31 that TSA currently accepts compliant identification up to a year after the expiration date.
Real ID rules apply to everyone, including those who have TSA Precheck.

TSA Issues Helpful Reminder Before Father's Day
While it may not be as busy as Memorial Day weekend last month, which set records with its air travel, Father's Day weekend is expected to bring quite a few people through airports as they travel to visit their fathers. In the days leading up to the weekend, the TSA has a reminder for everyone. In a post on social media this week, the TSA issued a warning for all passengers, reminding everyone that while empty water bottles are permitted through airport security, a full bottle will not be allowed. "Jetting off to see Dad? Don't bottle up your travel smarts. A full water bottle is a no-go, but an empty one (or one filled with solid ice) pours right through security. Refill post-checkpoint and keep the pop in your step this Father's Day!" the TSA wrote in a social media post this week. It might surprise some that the TSA actually allows ice to be taken through airport security, but frozen liquids of any kind are actually permitted to be taken through the security checkpoint and do not have to comply with the 3-1-1 rule for liquids. "Frozen liquid items are allowed through the checkpoint as long as they are frozen solid when presented for screening. If frozen liquid items are partially melted, slushy, or have any liquid at the bottom of the container, they must meet 3-1-1 liquids requirements," the TSA's website reads. The 3-1-1 rule mentioned refers to the 3.4 ounce maximum liquid allowance per item, which must be in 1 clear quart-sized zip-lock bag, with passengers only allowed one of those bags per person. The rationale for allowing frozen liquid is rather simple: it's very difficult to freeze corrosive or dangerous liquids that the TSA is screening for, so anything that is completely frozen is assumed to be safe. So if you want to bring a water bottle on board, just make sure that anything inside of it is frozen solid. Colorado confirms 14 cases of measles across the state
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has confirmed 14 cases of measles across the state. The majority of those are linked to an out-of-state traveler who flew while infectious and arrived at Denver International Airport last month. The latest case is linked to the out-of-state traveler who was exposed at the airport on May 13. That person is described as an unvaccinated adult from Arapahoe County. Illustration of the measles morbillivirus. RUSLANAS BARANAUSKAS/SCIENCE PHO The thirteenth case was reported to the CDPHE on June 9 as a child under the age of 5 from El Paso County and had traveled to Canada with family. The CDPHE said 2025 marks the highest increase and confirmation of reported measles cases in Colorado since 2014. Officials said that the best protection is the measles, mumps, and rubella or MMR vaccine. They added that, in rare cases, people who have been vaccinated can still contract the measles, but their symptoms are milder and they are less likely to spread it to others. Anyone experiencing symptoms is encouraged to call their healthcare provider or hospital before visiting to avoid exposing others.
