Real ID travel requirement goes in effect May 7: What Coloradans should know

Yahoo30-04-2025

DENVER (KDVR) — The countdown is on for Colorado travelers. On May 7, passengers will need a Real ID symbol on their driver's license or other form of acceptable identification to get through airport security.
Those without proper identification may face delays, additional screening, or not being allowed into the security checkpoint.

FOX31 found many travelers at Denver International Airport had questions about Real ID requirements.
'I don't know what is it for,' said one concerned airline passenger.
The Real ID Act is the result of the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the federal government set standards for issuing identification.
A Transportation Security Administration spokesperson told FOX31 that Colorado, which has been compliant with the act since 2013, maintains a high compliance rate.
The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles has examples of a Real ID license, which features a star on the front in the upper corner, on its website.
To be eligible to receive a Real ID, applicants must provide proof of identity, lawful presence, Colorado residency and a social security number, even if you transfer your Real ID from another state.
The DMV provides identification requirement charts and a new to Colorado page for more information.

The TSA website states that a temporary driver's license is not an acceptable form of identification but you can use other forms of ID.
A TSA spokesperson told FOX31 that TSA currently accepts compliant identification up to a year after the expiration date.
Real ID rules apply to everyone, including those who have TSA Precheck.

Apple Wallet gains new travel-friendly features in iOS 26

Apple Wallet is getting a bit more travel-friendly, Apple announced at WWDC 2025. The app will soon be able to hold a digital version of your passport, and boarding passes will gain new features that promise to make traveling a little bit easier. The new passport feature is 'not a replacement for your physical passport,' Apple said, but it can be used in apps that need to verify age and identity and at supported TSA checkpoints. Digital passports could help procrastinators who have yet to get their Real ID. Boarding passes have long been stored in the Wallet app, allowing for quick access from the lock screen. But with iOS 26, they're getting a host of new features. Boarding passes will now include links to terminal maps so it's easier to find your way to the gate or to baggage claim. Once at the claim, Wallet's new link to Find My should come in handy, allowing users to check the boarding pass to track the progress of their AirTagged luggage.

TSA: Costco cards do not count as REAL ID

June 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. Transportation Security Administration is warning travelers of an important piece of airport protocol: Costco membership cards do not count as REAL ID. The TSA, which began enforcing the requirement for REAL ID while traveling last month, said on social media that acceptable substitutes for the state-issued identification cards do not include wholesale warehouse memberships. "We love hot dogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not," the TSA said on X. The post did not specify what people or entities were spreading the misinformation. Accepted substitutes for REAL ID at U.S. airports include passports, border crossing and permanent resident cards. The REAL ID act was passed in 2005, but implementation was delayed multiple times, most recently in 2022 due to backlogs stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
