Azalina Suggests Government Raise Retirement Age To 65
PUTRAJAYA, May 20 (Bernama) -- Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has suggested that the government consider raising the mandatory retirement age from the current 60 to 65, noting that many senior citizens today remain healthy, active and capable of contributing to the workforce.
Expressing her personal view, Azalina said it is a loss to make people retire at 60 when they are still energetic and productive.
'Maybe the government should look at 65 years old (retirement). It is my personal view, not the Cabinet's view. Some of the officers that we have met are still young (at heart) and are active. It is just that they reached (mandatory) 60 years old,' she told reporters after attending the ministry's 2024 Excellent Service Awards Ceremony and 'Jasamu Dikenang' (Your Deeds Remembered) 2025 event here today.

He said the national oil company's move to downsize its workforce was instead due to global challenges. The restructuring process, he said, is necessary given the decline in crude oil prices. Fadillah also plans to meet with PETRONAS to get more details on the restructuring process. 'That is why PETRONAS has to relook its entire operation. 'I am planning a meeting with them to get a briefing on the matter and to ensure that the number of lay-offs can be reduced, if not avoided,' Bernama reported him as saying after the Aidiladha sacrificial event at Taman Hussein Mosque here yesterday. On June 5, PETRONAS president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz said the national oil company would be cutting 10% of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly due to falling crude prices. Tengku Muhammad Taufik said the number of staff involved in the downsizing process currently stands at around 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on the following day that the lay-off exercise involved mostly contract workers. On May 21, the federal and the Sarawak state governments signed a joint declaration, establishing clear parameters and a collaborative framework for PETRONAS and Petros in the oil and gas sector. According to the joint declaration, Petronas will continue its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations entrusted to the company, under the Petroleum Development Act and its regulations. Following the joint declaration, the Prime Minister's Office said all relevant federal and state laws relating to gas distribution in Sarawak are to co-exist and be respected by all parties.

His Royal Highness said it was especially disheartening that those exploiting the situation were Muslims themselves, who were willing to deceive their fellow believers for personal gain. Sultan Sharafuddin decreed that stern action be taken against any individual or travel agency offering haj packages that take advantage of and deceive Muslims. The Ruler said this in a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, in which His Royal Highness and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, extended Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Muslims across Malaysia. His Royal Highness also called on Muslims to uphold the sanctity of the haj by ensuring that all arrangements are made through licensed and recognised agents and companies authorised by the authorities to manage haj and umrah affairs, Bernama reported. At the same time, Their Royal Highnesses prayed that Malaysian pilgrims would be granted a mabrur haj and return home safely. According to the statement, the Sultan and the Tengku Permaisuri also hoped that this Aidiladha would inspire all Muslims to be grateful for Allah's blessings and to perform the sacrificial rites to help the poor, as well as reflect on the plight of the less fortunate. Sultan Sharafuddin and Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin performed the solat sunat Aidiladha with more than 10,000 congregants at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in Shah Alam yesterday. Pakistan's Asean partnership bid to be discussed

'It will be brought up for discussion at the Asean leaders' conference,' he told reporters briefly after performing the Aidiladha prayers at the Putra Mosque here yesterday. He said this when asked to comment on Pakistan's renewed efforts to elevate its partnership status with Asean, Bernama reported. Yesterday, Pakistan's High Commissioner to Malaysia Syed Ahsan Raza Shah said that Islamabad is renewing its push to become a full dialogue partner, reflecting the country's commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and deepening engagement with the bloc. Pakistan, which became Asean's first sectoral dialogue partner in 1993, values its cooperation with the regional grouping and aims to further expand the ties. In October last year, Anwar was quoted as saying that Malaysia fully supported Pakistan's efforts to become a full dialogue partner of Asean. When asked about Pakistan welcoming his offer to mediate in the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, Anwar said Malaysia only hopes for a peaceful resolution. 'I have no role to play; I'm simply offering my opinion,' he said. Earlier, Anwar and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, performed the Aidiladha prayers alongside nearly 15,000 congregants at the Putra Mosque. Anwar, dressed in a light blue baju Melayu, arrived at 7.50am and was greeted by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Dr Zulkifli Hasan. The Prime Minister also joined the congregation to recite the takbir raya before performing the Aidiladha prayers, led by the Grand Imam of the Putra Mosque, Dr Muhamad Zakuwa Rodzali. He then listened to the Aidiladha sermon, which emphasised the importance of intention, proper conduct and sincerity in performing the sacrificial ritual. Before departing, he took time to mingle and shake hands with members of the congregation. Meanwhile, Anwar said Malaysia supports the measures taken by Thailand and Cambodia in addressing the border dispute involving both countries. He said Malaysia, as the Chair of Asean 2025, will follow the development of the negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia through the Joint Boundary Commission scheduled for June 14 in Phnom Penh, in addition to providing the cooperation required for the talks. 'I spoke with both the prime ministers (of Thailand and Cambodia), and they have taken several measures that we support, namely the June 14 talks regarding the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute. 'I'm ready to follow and provide the cooperation (that is) required. So far, both governments have taken the stance of continuing negotiations amicably,' he told the media. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, which reportedly resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Thailand, meanwhile, has reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law, as well as existing agreements and memoranda with Cambodia.
