Meet the Strictest Headmistress in Britain

The main attraction in the Wembley neighborhood of northwest London is the eponymous football stadium where the England national team hosts its matches. But just half a mile away, situated in an almost aggressively unbeautified six-story office block, you'll find an even more impressive repository of human excellence.
The Michaela Community School is a 'free school.' Like charters in America, these schools aim to provide more pedagogical options to poor and marginalized communities. They are publicly funded, privately run, and controversial—both for their approaches to education and, critics say, for diverting resources from the public system. Around Michaela's asphalt courtyard, lines from 'Invictus,' William Henley's ode to grit and perseverance—'I am the master of my fate, / I am the captain of my soul'—have been blown up to the size of billboards. The slogan 'Knowledge is power' adorns a four-story banner hanging from the building's brick facade. Another banner reads: Private School Ethos—No Fees.
Michaela has no admissions filters for entrance into Year 7 (the first year of secondary school in Britain) and draws nearly all its students from Wembley, one of the poorest districts in London. Most students are Black or South Asian, and many are the children of immigrants. Yet its pupils perform at the level of their counterparts at the most prestigious private schools, earning twice the national average on the English Baccalaureate and the General Certificate of Secondary Education. More than 80 percent of Michaela graduates continue their studies at Russell Group Universities (Britain's top-24 colleges). One joke I heard repeatedly in conversations about Michaela was that a savvy posh family could spare the £50,000 annual tuition for Eton, purchase a flat in Wembley, and rest assured that their child would enjoy the same outsize chances of gaining admission to Oxford or Cambridge.
Michaela is the brainchild of Katharine Birbalsingh, known widely as 'Britain's strictest headmistress.' Her emphasis on hard work and her unsparing critique of victimization has propelled her to national and international prominence. In her neat and unfussy office hangs a quote from the Black American economist Thomas Sowell: 'When you want to help people, you tell them the truth. When you want to help yourself, you tell them what they want to hear.' A stack of books includes a collection of essays on Booker T. Washington, Shelby Steele's The Content of Our Character, and Mark Manson's The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. Near the doorway is a life-size cutout of Russell Crowe in Gladiator, bloodied sword in hand, with a piece of paper taped to his mouth reading HOLD THE LINE.
Birbalsingh is the daughter of Guyanese and Jamaican parents and a former French teacher. In 2010, she gave a viral speech at the Conservative Party Conference lamenting the school system's 'culture of excuses, of low standards, and expecting the very least from our poorest and most disadvantaged.' She argued that teachers were too afraid of 'the accusation of racism' to discipline Black boys, and that reform required 'right-wing thinking.' Her speech circulated so widely presumably because she wasn't the only one fed up with the persistent achievement gap between poor and well-off students. And she wasn't alone in believing that the gentler, more progressive approach to addressing students' needs, which had gained traction in the United Kingdom (and the United States), hurts kids who are already behind. Nevertheless, she was promptly pushed out of her teaching job as a result of that speech. Four years later, she co-founded Michaela.
I visited the academy twice—in December and then again in January—to speak with Birbalsingh and her staff and students, and to rove among the classrooms. Multiple delegations of teachers from other schools in the U.K. and abroad were touring Michaela at the same time to try to soak up its protocols and ethos. Birbalsingh told me that the school receives some 800 visitors a year, and copious guest books in the lobby bore their ecstatic testimonials. The students, impeccable in their gray trousers and navy blazers, are so accustomed to this outside interest that they do not so much as glance at a visitor when he enters the classroom.
Those blazers tend to be covered in merit badges: for attendance, club memberships, academic achievement (the 'Scholosaurus' badge). Pupils can earn demerits for infractions as minor as failing to maintain eye contact when a teacher is speaking. In the cafeteria, they shout in unison poems committed to memory before taking their seats. Over family-style meals that they both serve and clean up, conversation is guided by a formal question such as: What does it mean to be successful? Lunch—which is vegetarian—always concludes with students randomly chosen to address the room on the theme of gratitude. Teachers then provide candid feedback on these oratorical performances. I listened as one small girl with a braided ponytail gave an appreciation to her instructor for helping her better understand a math problem. She was praised for her delivery, for 'doing all the basics: confident, loud; she's owning the space.'
'Black people, Muslim people, minorities of any sort' should not 'have to hold their hand out to the white man and say, 'Please look after me,'' Birbalsingh told me later in her office. She objected fiercely to what she saw as the 'patronizing' idea being conveyed to young Black people that 'the only way you can get to Oxford is if there is affirmative action of some sort to let you in, or the only way you can get the job is if they have a list of quotas that allows you in because, well, they have to feel sorry for you.' Instead, she's teaching her students 'the knowledge and the skills that they need to be able to make their lives successful.'
Birbalsingh, herself a graduate of Oxford, said that she opens the school up to visitors because she wants 'to show people what's possible.' She conceives of Michaela not merely as a stand-alone educational institution making a difference in the lives of the local children lucky enough to attend it but also as a laboratory for expanding our understanding of what is socially and pedagogically possible for 'kids from the inner city.' She wants people to take her insights and methodology 'back to their schools and make their schools better. A huge part of the mission, actually, is seeding the ideas.' For those who cannot make it to Wembley, she has edited a volume of contributions from more than 20 teachers titled Battle Hymn of the Tiger Teachers: The Michaela Way.
You won't encounter them in Michaela's hallways, but critics of the school are legion. Some say that it is overly focused on test scores and rote memorization. It has little use for 'differentiation—catering differently within a lesson to students of varying ability,' George Duoblys observed in a 2017 London Review of Books essay. Teachers have little flexibility—their role, Duoblys wrote, is 'reduced to the transmission of an existing body of knowledge by means of a set of optimized techniques.'
'Michaela is an absolute monarchy,' Will Lloyd wrote last year in The New Statesman, and Birbalsingh 'its formidable, Gradgrindian headmistress-queen.' The article dismisses the school's conservatism as fetishizing a 'pseudo-British' past. Birbalsingh 'is never more than 30 seconds from saying she wants to return education to the 1950s, or lamenting that it's unfashionable to teach what your grandmother would have taught you,' Lloyd writes. 'She talks about 'love,' but the public persona is more 'Nightmare Victorian Patriarch.''
Michaela isn't a monarchy, but Lloyd is right that it's not a democracy either. Call it a benevolent dictatorship. Roughly half of the school's 700 students are Muslim, and Birbalsingh forbids them from gathering in large groups to pray during recess, arguing that nonobservant students might feel pressured by such outward displays of piety. One student's family took the school to court over the policy, and last year, a judge dismissed the case, arguing that the student knew about the rule before applying to the school. 'If parents do not like what Michaela is,' Birbalsingh remarked, 'they do not need to send their children to us.'
Birbalsingh is now involved in a contentious dispute with the new Labour government's secretary of education, Bridget Phillipson, over proposed reforms that would limit free schools' autonomy by imposing new hiring rules and an as-yet-to-be-defined national curriculum. Birbalsingh argues that teacher-certification requirements would undermine her ability to recruit and develop nontraditional candidates who might be put off by bureaucratic hoop-jumping, and that the national curriculum might force her to lower her own standards. She also called Phillipson a Marxist. Phillipson's office did not reply to a request for comment.
Birbalsingh believes that she's been punished for her political orientation throughout her tenure at Michaela. 'As a teacher, you're not really allowed to be a conservative,' she told me. She may not always vote conservative (she told me that she didn't in the previous election, though she wouldn't say whom she'd voted for). But she embraces the label of cultural conservative—'old-school, Black, small- c conservative,' advocating all manner of progressive taboos: hierarchy, personal responsibility, respectability politics.
When she was drumming up grassroots support around London for what would become Michaela, Birbalsingh recalled, she was protested by white people whom she believes had been 'bused in from the suburbs.' Opponents argued that the school would take resources away from the public system, which was already short on money for primary schools. 'We had to hire bouncers for our events because of the possible violence that might ensue,' Birbalsingh said. 'White people would stand up and shout in order to drown out our voices so that the Black people, the Black moms, generally speaking, could not hear what I was saying.'
Birbalsingh also struggled to find a space for the school. 'That's why we've ended up in this terrible building,' she told me with a laugh. 'No school building has six floors. Normally, it's two floors. You're not right next to the trains. When my staff are trying to talk to the kids, you can hardly hear them because of the trains. We have no car park for the staff. We have no trees and grass for the kids to run around. It's by no means ideal. But because I don't believe in feeling sorry for ourselves, you don't hear me going on about it all the time.' She added, 'I'm not going to spend my time being a victim.'
From what I saw, none of this presented a hindrance to learning. Nor was I very convinced that Michaela's teaching style sacrifices intellectual nuance and rigor on the altar of standardized-test scores. In December, I took a seat in the back of a room of 11- and 12-year-old students involved in a spirited discussion on atheism. When the teacher, a young man named Josh Cowland, posed a question, every single student's hand shot up. 'Atheists therefore argue that God cannot be omnipotent,' Cowland said. 'Because what is he not doing?' The students were given 10 seconds to consult their neighbors. 'Four, three, two,' Cowland counted down, and on 'one,' the room was blanketed in silence, as if you'd slipped on a pair of noise-canceling headphones. Once again, all hands were raised. A boy answered confidently: 'He's not stopping evil!'
Another teacher, James Sibley, told me that he knows the school has a reputation for drilling and being strict—as if 'you're going to get a knife in the face' if you get an answer wrong. But the expectations aren't the problem, he said: 'I think children are most unhappy not when there's pressure on them, but with inconsistency.'
'It was quite difficult to adapt to the expectations that the teachers had for us,' one boy told me, 'but once we did, it allowed us to be more successful and to be able to have high goals for ourselves as well.' An older girl agreed. 'The whole environment is mutually reinforcing the norms of excellence,' she said, 'which I think is what's so difficult in certain schools where even if you want to try your hardest, if you're not around other people who are doing it, it can be very difficult to be the only person living by certain standards.'
That sense of shared purpose is very different from what I remember of my own high school, where kids would laugh in your face for 'talking white.' My father, another Black, small- c cultural conservative, also made me recite 'Invictus.' From ninth to 12th grade, my best friend, Carlos, and I studied with him for hours in the evenings and on weekends, and we hid this deepest aspect of ourselves from our classmates. All of us judged one another by the quality of our outfits, by our physical indomitability and sexual prowess, and by our ability to evince an above-it-all insouciance in the face of the larger, white society around us. Sociologists call this 'cool-pose culture,' and it hobbled my friends and me when we were navigating adolescence. I saw no sign of it at Michaela.
In the hallways, the only talk I heard was 'Good day, sir,' as I passed earnest boys and girls moving efficiently between their classes. No one roughhoused or wasted time or teased one another. Nor did anyone laugh. I would be lying if I said that I didn't notice this distinct lack of levity. What was it like to always have to be a model student on display for curious onlookers? By comparison, my friends and I were free—luxuriously so—in ways these children possibly couldn't even imagine. But that freedom that so many underprivileged and minority children bask in isn't worth a damn thing if it leads to an adulthood boxed in by self-inflicted limitations.
'The stuff that really matters here is who our children are as people,' Birbalsingh told me. There's 'no exam in that,' she said, but you can 'look at our children, look at how they walk. Look at how they talk to each other. These are normal inner-city children, but they're not walking with that bop. They're not talking with that slang' or being 'rude to people on the buses.' None of this is accidental. 'We are teaching them how to behave,' she continued, so that they may 'live lives of dignity and of meaning.'
This all sounds like common sense, but it's hard to overstate the visceral disdain it can elicit. In a Guardian column about a 2022 documentary on Michaela, Britain's Strictest Headmistress, Zoe Williams sneered that the film 'continues to do the diligent work of Katharine Birbalsingh, in mythologizing herself so furiously that, if you didn't have a memory or know any better, you would think she invented the phrases 'please' and 'thank you.'' Such condescension would be merely impolite if it weren't leveraged in service of a status quo that has been failing children who are not already the beneficiaries of privilege. 'Competence is controversial,' Birbalsingh said, when I asked her why she thinks there is so much enmity directed at her project.
But competence is also infectious. On my second visit, I struck up a conversation with a young teacher named Ryan Badolato from Vertex Partnership Academies, in the Bronx, a charter school with a mission similar to Michaela's. 'I've never seen kids so invested in their academic success, praised so much for their hard work, or any group of teenagers as polite and respectful as they all were,' he expanded several days later over email. 'Despite the outside world viewing their school as overly strict—a place where students should feel unhappy and eager to leave—what I witnessed was the opposite: They are the happiest and most proud teenagers I have ever met.'

How a Community of Architects Is Helping Altadena Rebuild and Protect Its Culture

As the devastating Eaton wildfire tore through parts of Altadena and damaged homes, it also threatened to erase generations of Black homeownership, legacy, and pride rooted in the unincorporated Los Angeles County community. 'There [are] a lot of legacy homeowners who have lived here since the '40s, '50s, '60s. These homes are their primary source of wealth and identity,' said Matthew Trotter, architect and president of the Southern California chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (SoCal NOMA). 'These aren't just properties. These are people's histories. These are people's memories.' In response to the devastating fires, Trotter and local architects, advocates, and designers came together to form the Altadena Rebuild Coalition to make it easier for more families to return to the area and preserve its historic charm and culture. 'We realized that if we didn't get involved, a lot of these homeowners wouldn't come back, and that would completely shift the demographics and character of the neighborhood,' Trotter said. Many of the volunteers share a connection to the community and want to make sure Altadena wildfire survivors, facing steep rebuild costs and limited support, have access to their fair share of resources. 'Many of our legacy architects and high-ranking members lost their homes,' Trotter said. 'Many of them are from Altadena, so it was actually very personal for us, on top of an opportunity to advocate for communities of color.' Altadena's significance for African Americans dates back to the Jim Crow era, when Black families faced redlining in Los Angeles and needed a place of refuge. It became a center of resilience and freedom where they could build their lives, homes, and legacies. 'That's why NOMA is doing what it's doing through the Altadena Rebuild Coalition. That's why a lot of organizations are doing what they're doing,' Trotter said. 'We give the residents a fighting chance to go back home and to build stronger and to build better.' The coalition began by hosting community events focused not on architecture, but on healing. 'The first thing that we did was just gather information and create space for this community to weep, to cry, to sing,' Trotter said. 'It was all about providing food, providing a space where they can talk, get some things off their chest.' As the community began to process the loss, the coalition shifted its focus to educating the community about fire resistance and the rebuilding process. 'Our main goal is to create awareness and increase the residents' knowledge,' Trotter said. 'Connecting them with people that can support them... builders talking about the construction process, architects talking about the design process, approval process.' According to a recent report from UCLA's Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, more than half of the homes lost in the Eaton Fire belonged to Black families, despite Black residents making up less than 30% of Altadena's population. Homeownership among Black residents in Altadena is 81%, nearly double the national average. 'Generations of Black families and people of color who have created an incredible cultural impact on Los Angeles have come from Altadena,' Trotter said. 'We're trying to make sure this isn't just another example of a Black community getting erased because systems weren't set up to support them.' Many of Altadena's longtime residents are elders, and helping them navigate recovery and keep the properties they hoped to pass on to their families is a key part of the coalition's mission. 'We've been working with a lot of churches in Altadena and just showing up,' to answer questions, Trotter said. The outreach has been effective because older homeowners take comfort in knowing that the group not only understands what they are going through on the surface, but also the hidden concerns and nuances that are part of the recovery process. 'They're seeing architects that look like them, that come from their culture, and so that's really been helpful for them,' Trotter said. Building on that shared experience and trust has been crucial in supporting homeowners who are overwhelmed and are feeling financial pressures to sell. 'There's a lot of fear,' Trotter said. 'Not only did I lose my home, but now there's all these people coming to us out of the woodworks, and they're telling me that they want to help me, but I don't know if they're actually trying to help me,' he said, echoing concerns from residents. Trotter said the goal is to help families rebuild, but he also acknowledges that some will inevitably sell because the mountains of paperwork, increasing cost, and the stress of it all may not be worth the time and trouble in their personal situation. 'We can't frown upon someone doing what they think needs to be done for the sake of their family,' he said. 'If a family needs to sell... we need to be able to have empathy and hold space for that, no matter how much you may want Altadena to look the same way that you remembered it when you were growing up.' As part of the coalition's program, residents receive a customized 'property package' containing aerial images of their home, zoning data, and a record of past permits. These packages have served multiple purposes for residents, helping them fill out right-of-entry forms, providing documentation for insurance claims and starting the design process for their rebuilds. The coalition is currently assisting 200 families with their recovery and reviewing the packets in phone calls to explain their options. Residents can choose to hire one of the volunteer architects to design their rebuild, relocate using their insurance payout, or take their packet and knowledge to hire someone else. The coalition also offers a directory of architects and designers. Trotter stressed that the goal is to empower residents with the knowledge they need to hire the right person for them. 'We encourage the homeowners to not have anybody bully them into doing anything that they want to do,' Trotter said. They've also been working with city and county officials to streamline design approvals as a way to speed up rebuilding and reduce costs, and have been fielding interest from outside groups wanting to connect with Altadena homeowners. 'There are many philanthropic organizations that have been reaching out to us... There have been some conversations about land banking or land trusts in a way to support people who may want to sell,' he said. But Trotter said he meets all these groups with a level of caution, fueled by the residents' fear that real estate firms or outsiders may try to 'gobble up what they once knew to be their neighborhood.' He said any group he works with or presents to the community of wildfire survivors must respect Altadena's architectural and cultural history, as well as the community's yearning to simply return home. 'We do our best to do our due diligence... we always ask, like, can you do this at a discounted rate? Are you going to be volunteering and helping out in advance to help these individuals, who are residents, get back up on their feet?' Trotter said. 'We're not trying to gatekeep. We're trying to guide people who want to help to do it in a way that supports the residents here.' Even with its emphasis on protecting Black ownership and wealth in the area, the coalition offers its services to every family affected by the fire, regardless of background. 'The majority of Altadena, white and Black, and everyone in between, is interested in going back home. That's the desire of their heart,' Trotter said. Trotter said the multicultural participation in the coalition's meetings and programs reflects his group's mission to preserve Altadena's enduring sense of unity and the community's pride in its history and diverse heritage. 'What's powerful is that these residents, they're real neighbors, and they love each other, and they support each other, and they've got each other's backs,' Trotter said. 'It's not necessarily about making it all Black. It's not about making it all white. It's about returning to what makes Altadena so specifically abundant in diversity.' This year's theme for an Oakland school's yearbook was 'Celebrating 100 years.' Parent volunteers at Montclair Elementary School took it seriously, pulling archived pictures and articles to include in their kids' books. But despite multiple parents having multiple eyes on the final product, they seemingly missed a racial slur printed in an old article, and it didn't take long for students to point it out. Sloane Young's eight-year-old daughter attends Montclair, where the error occurred. When she saw the racial slur printed in her yearbook, she went straight to her mother, a Black woman and president of the PTA. 'I have a very bold, outspoken eight-year-old, and when she saw it, she said, 'Mom, why did you allow this to go in the yearbook when you're Black,'' Young told KTVU. In the racist entry from 1940, an annual carnival is portrayed saying, 'Boy and Girl Scouts will have charge of booths and many attractions such as n****r babies.' The photo also depicted little white kids throwing balls at Black kids with the sign 'Hit the N****r Baby' painted on top. 'The description of the game, once you start Googling it, is horrific,' PTA President Young said. Hundreds of books were handed out to students, with many students getting their books signed by their peers before the mistake was recognized. As for how such a careless mistake even happened, Young said volunteers simply didn't read before adding to the collage. 'Unfortunately, they skimmed the first paragraph of that article, and scanned it into the software we use for the yearbook,' she continued. She continued taking full responsibly for the racist mistake under her leadership. But the Montclair community was still left with concerns and overall mistrust for the school. Brenda Mitchell, a student's grandmother, told ABC 7, 'I was like, what the hell is this?' Mitchell continued, 'This is 2025… 1900s, what do the kids need to know about?' She added, 'Why would you bring that out? Why would you even put that in there? It was very inappropriate. Very inappropriate.' The school's principal, David Kloker, invited parents last week 'for a circle about racial equity' hoping to bridge the 'larger narrative of racial hostility felt by some families and students' at the school. Kloker also emailed parents formally apologizing for the hurtful entry. He added how stickers would be provided for students to cover up the racial slurs… but not all of the parents were down with that idea. 'Put a sticker over it. What do you mean, put a sticker over it?' Mitchell asked. Another parent agreed, adding, 'That's unacceptable. What they should have done is collected all the yearbooks and redone them, and then passed them back out.' In a separate email, Young announced new yearbooks have been ordered. 'And I will be here all summer ensuring that every family, either the yearbook is mailed out or I swap it out for them personally,' she said. Young also announced she's stepping down from the yearbook committee.

At that point, I'd been parenting for over a year, and yet, I'd somehow forgotten to tell her how much this new life-altering experience had meant to me. In fact, one of the first things I decided after my son was born was that I wouldn't write about him or motherhood. I'd felt unable to describe the mixture of joy, rage, love, and exhaustion that consumed me because of it. More accurately, it took me years to feel comfortable with the idea that parenting wasn't a frivolous topic, and 'mother' was a word I actually wanted to be associated with. Since then, there have been other moments of motherhood dissonance. I've found myself baking a cake from scratch (which, for the record, has never turned out quite right!) or cooking a meal for my family, feeling happily domestic, when a suspicious sensation takes over, as if I might turn into a milkmaid-dress donning homesteader who has abandoned all her progressive ideals. But is enjoying cooking food for people you love a conservative endeavor? And why did it take me so long to feel ok to share my experiences as a mother? Sure, I never dreamed of becoming a parent when I was growing up, and I saw the suburbs as a heteronormative hellscape. But it's more than that—recently, it's because the cultural chasm surrounding motherhood has widened, largely because of politics. On one side of the political spectrum, conservatives have adeptly rebranded motherhood as a sanctified identity—stylized, nostalgic, and tightly wrapped in traditional values. From the rise of tradwives, to the rise of the pronatalist movement, to the homeschooling revival, conservative motherhood has become not only a lifestyle but a political aesthetic. Decorated in gingham and pastels, with references to "simpler times," right-wing influencers have woven a narrative where motherhood is both an ideal and a coveted aesthetic—one that often valorizes the nuclear family, eschews public institutions, and distrusts science. Read More: The False Escapism of Soft Girls and Tradwives Meanwhile, the left has engaged in a vital act of exposing the harsher and heavier realities of parenting. From economists like Emily Oster and writers Jessica Valenti and Angela Garbes (to name a very few), we have been shown the truth about the gender wage gap's impact on parenting, the way maternal mortality disproportionately affects Black women, and the imbalance of cognitive labor that mothers bear. Social media accounts like TikTok's @momunfiltered share stories of messy motherhoods detailing the exhaustion, the inequity, and the lack of social safety nets. These accounts have helped to destigmatize these experiences and have revealed how parenting in a country with no universal childcare, inadequate maternal healthcare, and no guaranteed paid leave becomes an act of survival for many. This truth is essential—especially in a culture that punishes mothers while feigning reverence for them. But amidst this necessary reckoning, depictions of joy and meaning have been lost. As a queer, progressive mother of two, I know this conflict intimately. I've noticed how quickly I'll make a joke about the stress of parenting, but hesitate to share when something about it feels deeply good. There's a subtle sense that taking pleasure in domesticity might be a betrayal of my values—as if nurturing children, or even enjoying something as benign as baking, plays into oppressive tropes. But why should the right own parenting and caretaking? I was most struck by the recent headline of feminist philosopher Kate Manne, who wrote a piece titled 'Don't Have Children,' where she described her daughter as her greatest joy, but simultaneously wrote that she hopes to never become a grandmother. Is that the best we can offer children and young people in our country, which is rich in money, technology, advanced medical treatments, and resources? This complete give-up cannot be the only solution. . In our efforts to dismantle the idealization of motherhood, the left has struggled to articulate a more complex view of caregiving—one that acknowledges the labor, yes, but also celebrates the connection, creativity, and sometimes radical meaning that comes with raising children. It has also left out a vision for what caregiving has the potential to be under the right leadership. As the conservative right makes motherhood its ideological stronghold, the left risks ceding not just the narrative, but the cultural and political power that comes with it. What would it mean to embrace motherhood not only as a struggle but a site of potential joy and creativity? Our elected officials could, in theory, make positive change should they choose to take on caretaking in a meaningful way. We've seen it happen elsewhere: In 2024, for instance, the UK passed a law attempting to help specifically working and low-income families by allowing access to free childcare for up to 15 hours per week for children nine months and older, and up to 30 hours for three and four year olds. This past April, Singapore added four weeks of mandatory paternity leave (other countries, including Sweden, Japan, and Norway have similar policies), which has the ability to jump-start more equitable caretaking for both parents early on. This does not solve all the issues that come with parenthood, but it's certainly a start. Leftist activists are fighting for childcare funding, reproductive justice, and equitable family leave policies. There are growing grassroots childcare collectives popping up, like Rad Dad Zine and the Parenting for Liberation network, which both model the use of mutual aid, intersectionality, and bring joy to the forefront. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw families lean on each other for pod schooling and collaborative use of resources. Despite these boots on the ground movements, we don't see our elected Democratic officials take these needs on in a meaningful way that would put people over profits. The left doesn't need to replicate the tradwife stylings, however relaxing and visually appealing it seems, but it does need its own vision—one that affirms the possibility of caregiving without erasing the hardship. To reclaim motherhood, the left must do more than critique. We must dream and share what caregiving could look like in our world of more than plenty. We must push our elected officials to champion meaningful public policies like universal childcare and paid parental leave. I've also realized that I can do a better job of making more visible the joy and radical meaning that comes not despite caregiving, but because of it. I have become more vocal in claiming the title of mother and discussing the varying ways motherhood has changed me for the better. Above all, since all moms feel so differently about each stage, day, and moment, I try to make sure that I am just sharing my point of view. Motherhood and joy are not inherently conservative. It's time for the left (and me) to reclaim this truth—and with it, to imagine a future where parenting is not a battleground but a common ground. Contact us at letters@
