Lopsided loss leaves Miami Hurricanes' baseball season on the brink vs. Southern Miss
Disaster struck quickly on Sunday night for the Miami Hurricanes baseball team.
Freshman starter Tate DeRias could not survive the first inning, allowing a shocking nine runs on seven hits, one walk and one hit by pitch.
Miami never recovered.
Host and top-seeded Southern Miss rolled to a 17-6 win over the third-seeded Hurricanes.
'It's not how you draw it up,' Miami coach J.D. Arteaga said of the nine-run barrage. 'It's tough to come back from that.
'We were in a tough spot. They had to beat us twice, and we had to make pitching decisions on who to use and who not to use.
'(DeRias' velocity) was fine. His location – the pitches were down, but they were in the middle of the plate. We were hoping (Southern Miss) would hit the ball right at somebody, but it didn't happen.'
The good news for the Hurricanes is that they had played their way through the winner's bracket of this four-team, double-elimination tournament by beating Alabama and Columbia earlier in the regional.
Therefore, Miami (33-25) and Southern Miss (47-15) will meet again on Monday night (9 p.m. Eastern). The winner advances to the super regionals. The loser packs it up as their season is over.
Sunday's result was shocking because DeRias had been so good as a freshman this season, entering this game with a 3.98 ERA.
However, he got just two outs on Sunday – and one of them took a video-review overturn that caught a Southern Miss player running out of the base-path to avoid a tag.
Other than that, DeRias allowed a single on the game's first pitch, then got the video-review-assisted out before allowing a walk and an RBI single to Matthew Russo.
DeRias then got a ground ball, but Miami couldn't turn the double play on the slow roller, and then the proverbial floodgates opened wide.
There were RBI singles by Ben Higdon, Seth Smith and Jake Cook and a two-run single by Carson Paetow to make it 6-0.
At any point in there, Arteaga could've justifiably removed DeRias, but he resisted the urge.
'The last thing you want is to take your starter out in the first inning,' Arteaga said. 'You don't want to be too quick and go through your whole staff.'
As it turned out, Arteaga yanked DeRias one batter later as Joey Urban – a South Floridan from Jupiter -- jacked a three-run homer.
Reliever Jake Dorn came in and retired the next batter, but that 35-minute half-inning put Miami's season on the brink.
Meanwhile, DeRias' ERA went up by nearly two runs, to 5.86, and that type of statistical movement is rarely seen for a starting pitcher this late in the season. But that's how bad things were for Miami on Sunday.
The Hurricanes, to their credit, scored one run in the second on a Tanner Smith homer, and Miami closed its deficit to 10-5 with a four-run fifth inning. An RBI single by Michael Torres and Jake Ogden's two-run double were the highlights of Miami's best rally of the night.
But that was as close as Miami got the rest of the way.
The only other good news on the night for Miami was the fact that Arteaga was able to save his most trusted relievers – Brian Walters and Carson Fischer – for Monday's game. They both should be able to pitch a couple innings as needed.
Also, Hurricanes starters AJ Ciscar and Griffin Hugus – who were pitching stars on Friday and Saturday, respectively -- might be able to give Miami a couple of outs if it means keeping its season alive.
'It's a must-win,' Arteaga said. 'All hands on deck. There's no script for a one-game playoff. We will pick a starter, and if he is getting outs, he will stay out there.'
Third baseman Daniel Cuvet, who is Miami's best hitter, is confident the Hurricanes can survive and advance.
'I have a lot of faith in our team,' he said. 'We've been able to bounce back all year. It's just a feeling we have in our locker-room.'
Added Arteaga: 'We are 0-0 every morning when we wake up. We only look back to learn, and we only look forward to prepare.
'All that matters is the present.'

NCAA baseball tournament super regional schedule: Breaking down the eight matchups
NCAA baseball tournament super regional schedule: Breaking down the eight matchups We're just one step away from college baseball's elite determining this season's national champion. Well, OK, technically we're two steps away, but you get the idea. This weekend, the remaining 16 teams will square off in best-of-three super regionals, with the eight winners headed to Nebraska and the sport's ultimate destination, the College World Series. Here's a breakdown of all eight pairings with game times and TV channels to help you plan your weekend viewing. Keep in mind, of course, that weather might cause delays at some locales, and the schedules later in the weekend will hinge on which and how many series require third and deciding contests. Miami (Fla.) (34-25) at Louisville (38-21) Game 1: Friday, 3 p.m. ET, ESPN2 Game 2: Saturday, 11 a.m. ET, ESPN This is an all-ACC series, though the Cardinals and Hurricanes happened to be among the teams that missed each other in the regular season thanks to league expansion. The offensive sparks for Louisville are often provided by the outfield duo of Lucas Moore, who is hitting .366 with 48 stolen bases, and Zion Rose, who has 12 homers and a team-high 61 RBI. Miami was not the most consistent squad during the season and was somewhat fortunate to land on the right side of the bubble, but 3B Daniel Cuvet had an all-conference campaign and there are good options out of the bullpen. No. 9 Florida State (41-14) at No. 8 Oregon State (45-13-1) Game 1: Friday, 6 p.m. ET, ESPN2 Game 2: Saturday, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2 These regular postseason participants from opposite coasts provide one of the more intriguing matchups of the super regional lineup. The Beavers' potent batting order, led by Aiva Arquette and Gavin Turley with 18 homers each, must try to solve Jamie Arnold and the Seminoles' accomplished pitching staff. The series might come down to how well Oregon State's arms can stop the Seminoles. Arizona (42-18) at No. 5 North Carolina (45-13) Game 1: Friday, noon ET, ESPN2 Game 2: Saturday, noon ET, ESPN2 Like most ACC schools, UNC is still seeking its first baseball title. But these Tar Heels might be the ones to deliver, thanks to a deep pitching staff anchored by Jake Knapp and sizzling-hot Gavin Gallaher pacing a high-octane lineup at the plate. The Wildcats' primary catalyst is Mason White, the team's best hitter who is also among the nation's leaders in triples with eight. No. 13 Coastal Carolina (51-11) at No. 4 Auburn (41-18) Game 1: Friday, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2 Game 2: Saturday, 3 p.m. ET, ESPN2 The Coastal Carolina program would seem to be in good hands under first-year coach Kevin Schnall, who had big shoes to fill succeeding retired legend Gary Gilmore. The Chanticleers' biggest strength is their pitching depth, sporting the best team ERA (3.22) of all the super regional participants. Auburn leads the SEC in doubles with 129, a good way to keep pressure on opposing pitchers with a steady stream of runners in scoring position. Texas-San Antonio (47-13) at No. 15 UCLA (45-16) Game 1: Saturday, 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU Game 2: Sunday, 3 p.m. ET, TBD It seems fitting that the Roadrunners have scored more total runs, 528, than any other squad still alive in the field. Heading the UTSA hit parade is Drew Detlefsen with a team-high 70 RBI. The first challenge for the road team figures to be Bruins righty Michael Barnett, who sports an 11-1 record with 70 strikeouts to just 18 walks. Murray State (42-14) at Duke (40-19) Game 1: Saturday, 1 p.m. ET, ESPNU Game 2: Sunday, noon ET, TBD It's no big secret how the Racers got here as a No. 4 seed in its regional. Murray State pounds out 8.8 runs a game, and even managed to surpass that lofty average against the likes of Ole Miss and Georgia Tech in the postseason. It's fair to wonder if the Racers have enough arms to keep Duke's lineup that also puts up over eight runs per contest at bay. The long list of dangerous hitters in this series includes Murray State outfielder Dan Tauken and Blue Devils third baseman Ben Miller. West Virginia (44-14) at No. 6 LSU (46-15) Game 1: Saturday, 2 p.m. ET, ESPN Game 2: Sunday, 6 p.m. ET, ESPN2 LSU had to work a little harder than expected to prevent Little Rock from becoming the second No. 4 seed to win a regional this year. The Tigers will likely have an equally hard time dispatching the Mountaineers, the comeback kids of the tournament after late rallies to beat Clemson and Kentucky. Jared Jones (20 HR, 69 RBI) is the latest in the long line of LSU sluggers to emerge. At some point he'll likely encounter Reese Bassinger, the workhorse of the WVU bullpen. No. 14 Tennessee (46-17) at No. 3 Arkansas (46-13) Game 1: Saturday, 5 p.m. ET, ESPN Game 2: Sunday, 3 p.m. ET, ESPN One could certainly make the case that this is the marquee matchup of the round of 16, pitting the defending national champion against the highest remaining seed in this year's field. It's also a rematch of the final regular-season series of the SEC campaign, which also took place in Fayetteville just a few weeks ago. The Razorbacks took the latter two contests of that set, including a game two win in which they slapped around Volunteers lefty ace Liam Doyle. Tennessee also has plenty of offensive pop, of course, but Arkansas ranks in the top 15 nationally in both scoring and team ERA thanks to guys like Wehiwa Aloy and Zach Root.

NCAA Tournament: Predictions, picks for 2025 Super Regionals
The final obstacle on the road to Omaha for the College World Series will take place this weekend across college baseball, as the super regional round of the NCAA Tournament begins Friday night. However, the super regionals will begin without Alabama, as the Crimson Tide failed to advance to this weekend. Yes, the Alabama Crimson Tide are no longer playing in the NCAA Tournament, as the Crimson Tide fell in the 2025 Hattiesburg Regional last week, going 0-2 with losses to both Miami and host Southern Miss. In fact, last week was a bit of a down one for the SEC entirely, as the conference saw a majority of their teams in the NCAA Tournament lose in the regional round. Because of this, four remain standing entering the super regionals, a pair of which will face each other. Here are predictions for each of the super regional series' this upcoming weekend, as well as which teams will be advancing to Omaha for the 2025 Men's College World Series. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle Louisville Super Regional - Louisville vs. Miami A pair of unranked seeds from the ACC collide in the Louisville Super Regional as the Cardinals host Miami, who came out of the Hattiesburg Regional field that also included Alabama. Despite being from the same conference, Louisville and Miami have yet to meet this season, making this an intriguing series between two unranked seeds where a game three could be possible. Prediction: Louisville in 3 Corvallis Super Regional - Oregon State vs. Florida State One of the more high-profile super regional matchups this weekend takes place in Corvallis, Oregon where the No. 8 overall seed Oregon State Beavers host the No. 9 seeded Florida State Seminoles. Expect this matchup to live up to the hype it garners going in as well, with this series likely to advance to a game three. Prediction: Florida State in 3 Chapel Hill Super Regional - North Carolina vs. Arizona Chapel Hill is set to host a super regional series between No. 5 national seed North Carolina and Arizona. Arizona advanced past the Eugene Regional a week ago, but it will certainly be a tall task for the Wildcats here to come to North Carolina and win two games. Prediction: North Carolina in 2 Auburn Super Regional - Auburn vs. Coastal Carolina The Auburn Super Regional will feature a pair of national seeds facing off as the No. 4 seeded Tigers host No. 13 Coastal Carolina. Don't be surprised if this series goes either way, but for the sake of a prediction, I'll go with the Tigers at home. Prediction: Auburn in 3 Los Angeles Super Regional - UCLA vs. UTSA Los Angeles will play host to a super regional between No. 15 overall seed UCLA and UTSA, a team that shocked the college baseball world a week ago by upsetting Texas in Austin. Don't sleep on the Roadrunners to upset another ranked seed here, but it will be a tough task against the Bruins in Los Angeles. Prediction: UCLA in 3 Durham Super Regional - Duke vs. Murray State After advancing out of the Athens Regional, Duke will now host the Durham Super Regional against another team that is coming off an upset-filled weekend in Murray State, who advanced out of the Oxford Regional. Two unranked seeds, this could be where Murray State's run ends at Duke, but you should not count out the Racers entirely either. Prediction: Duke in 2 Baton Rouge Super Regional - LSU vs. West Virginia After narrowing advancing past the regionals, No. 6 national seeded LSU will host the Baton Rouge Super Regional where the Tigers are set to welcome West Virginia to town. Facing a good Mountaineers team, I expect LSU to take care of business here, sending a second SEC team to Omaha. Prediction: LSU in 2 Fayetteville Super Regional - Arkansas vs. Tennessee We conclude with a SEC matchup that is likely the most anticipated super regional series as No. 3 national seeded Arkansas hosts No. 14 seed Tennessee in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks and Volunteers met in Fayetteville for the regular season series finale from May 15-17, a series in which Arkansas took two-of-three headlined by an 8-4 win during Game 3. Prediction: Arkansas in 3 Contact/Follow us @RollTideWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Alabama news, notes and opinion.
