American Music Awards: How to watch, what to expect
May 23 (UPI) -- The American Music Awards will return Monday.
The 51st ceremony "celebrating the most iconic music in America" will air on CBS and Paramount+ at 8 p.m. EDT from the Fountainebleu Hotel in Las Vegas.
Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez will host, and she is also among the star-studded roster of performers.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar is leading nominations this year, with 10 potential awards.
How to watch
The American Music Awards will air Monday at 8 p.m. EDT on CBS and on Paramount+ for subscribers who have Showtime. Paramount+ subscribers without Showtime can stream the awards show Tuesday.
Participants
Lopez will host and perform during the ceremony. She hosted in 2015 and has performed several times in the past.
Other performers include Lainey Wilson, who released the track "Somewhere Over Laredo" Friday, Benson Boone, who will perform a track from his upcoming album American Heart, and Blake Shelton, who will sing a song from his album For Recreational Use Only.
Gloria Estefan will also perform, marking three decades since she's done so, and Gwen Stefani will take the stage with a medley spanning her music career. Renee Rapp will sing as well.
Janet Jackson, who will be honored with the Icon Award, will also perform. According to a press release, the Icon Award is given to "an artist whose music has had undeniable cultural and global influence over the music industry."
Nominees
Kendrick Lamar leads with 10 nominations, while Post Malone received eight.
First time nominees include Boone, Doechii, Gracie Abrams, Jelly Roll, Lola Young, The Marias, Rose, Teddy Swims, Tommy Richman, Tyla Sabrina Carpenter and Zach Bryan.

2 Reasons AMC Stock Is Soaring in June
Memorial Day weekend set moviegoing records, and a lot of the sales went to AMC as the largest theater chain. With many expected hit movies slated for release, management thinks it's turned a corner. AMC stock is still down year to date and the company has a lot to prove. 10 stocks we like better than AMC Entertainment › AMC (NYSE: AMC) is the largest movie theater operator in the world, but being the leader in a troubled industry hasn't done much for the company over the past few years. With the advent of streaming and residual fears from the pandemic, moviegoing just isn't what it once was and AMC continues to struggle. However, Memorial Day weekend was a boon for the company and AMC stock has been climbing. Let's see why and what it means for the future. Streaming from home has taken a toll on the box office, but there is still life left in theaters. Four of the top 10 highest-grossing films ever were released since the pandemic started, including Avatar: The Way of Water in the No. 3 spot and last year's Inside Out 2. People are still going to the movies. That fact was reinforced with a record Memorial Day weekend in May. Disney's live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch had the highest-ever four-day Memorial Day opening, and it was buttressed by a strong showing for Paramount's Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning. Altogether, these two topped a blowout weekend with $326.7 million in domestic ticket sales, and Lilo & Stitch is already the second-highest-grossing domestic film of the year. Of course, that success trickled down to generate incredible financial results for AMC. Management said it set an all-time record for admissions revenue, food and beverage revenue, and total revenue for a weekend Memorial Day opening, and that the five-day stretch was the third-highest revenue for any five-day slot in more than 10 years. As for attendance, this was the highest-attended weekend and highest-attended five-day period of the year, both domestically and globally. Management didn't provide specific financial metrics for the weekend, so investors aren't likely to hear the nitty-gritty details until the second-quarter earnings release sometime in July or August. But management's update and optimism are boosting investor confidence. It's nice for the company to have a solid, record-breaking opening, but can it last? Management thinks so, and the market may be pricing that in. CEO Adam Aron said that after this weekend, AMC has turned a corner. "With many more potentially huge movies coming in June all the way through the end of 2025, and beyond that deeply into 2026 as well," he said, "we firmly expect to be enjoying a robust theatrical box office as we look ahead." Here's what to be excited about. Disney has a full slate of films coming out over the next few years, including the third film in the Avatar series. The first two are the highest-grossing and third-highest-grossing films ever, and the next film is slated for release this coming December. It also has the next Frozen film and other top franchises coming out soon. Warner Bros. has its own expected hits coming out, including a new Superman, and Comcast's Universal Studios has the next installment of Wicked and a new Shrek. Sequels to popular franchises can be big business. But the company is still reporting revenue declines and losses as of the 2025 first quarter. It will take some time to see if AMC has indeed turned a corner. As the price has increased in June, so has the short interest in AMC, hitting almost 15% of all outstanding shares. These investors are betting on this being a short-term boost and that the price will fall from this surge. Even though AMC stock is up 29% over the past month, it's still down 15% year-to-date. Unless the company releases incredibly strong earnings for the second quarter and keeps up its performance, the price jump may not last. Part of what's frustrating about that for investors is that many variables are beyond the company's control. It's up to film producers to create hit movies that bring viewers into theaters and to make the decision to keep them there long enough before they hit streaming services. That can be quite lumpy. You need to have real confidence in the future of the film industry and the resilience of theaters as a beckoning call for die-hard fans to want to invest in AMC's future, and for most investors, that time isn't now. Clooney, Denzel, Nicole, Patti: Inside Broadway's big off-stage drama ahead of the Tonys
There's never a shortage of drama on Broadway. However, this Tony season has taken things to a whole new level. And with records for both ticket prices and box-office grosses having been broken this year, there's more at stake than ever for Sunday's ceremony, which will be held at Radio City and air live on CBS starting at 8 p.m., as well as stream on Paramount+ and Showtime. Some huge-name stars (hello, Denzel Washington) are said to be hurting from snubs,. while others who are nominated — sorry, George Clooney — already know they won't win. 19 Three-time Tony winner Patti LuPone isn't even nominated for a Tony this year, but she's starred in some blockbuster drama, causing such a stir that 500 Broadway artists signed an open letter condemning her words. FilmMagic But even if you are an A-list Hollywood actor, 'Just because you're on stage does not entitle you to a Tony nomination. The disappointment quotient is higher [this year] and it makes it more interesting,' one Tonys insider told The Post. 'In years past, perhaps the caliber of nominees wasn't really as high or exciting. Competition wasn't as great as it is this year.' Nor were the off-stage theatrics. Three-time Tony winner Patti LuPone, never known for keeping her opinions to herself, isn't even nominated this year — but kicked off such a storm that 500 Broadway artists signed an open letter condemning her words. And that messy situation might even end up influencing voters in the heated category of Best Actress in a Musical. 19 'Sunset Boulevard' star Nicole Scherzinger, meanwhile, is a frontrunner to take home the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical. But in the past two weeks, insiders have been buzzing about McDonald's momentum. That's because she's been in the headlines for reasons no star wants. It all began last year, when LuPone — who was co-starring with Mia Farrow in 'The Roommate' at the Booth Theatre on 45th Street — called in a noise complaint to Shubert Organization head Robert Wankel about 'Hell's Kitchen,' the Alicia Keys musical starring Kecia Lewis and playing at the Shubert Theatre on 44th, which shares a wall with the Booth. 19 'Othello' stars Denzel Washington (left) and Jake Gyllenhaal are said to be hurting from snubs. McDonald then showed support for Lewis on Instagram, which apparently annoyed LuPone, who she has shared the stage many times. 'That's typical of Audra. She's not a friend,' LuPone told the New Yorker in an interview, published in late May, that totally rocked the Broadway community. 19 LuPone complained about the neighboring show, 'Hell's Kitchen,' for being too noisy last year when she starred in 'The Roommate' at The Booth Theatre. 'People are thinking that the New Yorker profile on Patti LuPone was akin to the [former FBI director James] Comey emails about Hillary Clinton,' the Tonys insider joked to The Post. It led to more than 500 Broadway artists, ranging from Tony winners like Wendell Pierce to wild cards like Courtney Love, putting their names to an open letter condemning LuPone. 19 LuPone trashed Kecia Lewis (above) in The New Yorker, saying, 'She calls herself a veteran? This led to an apology via social media by LuPone, who said, 'I regret my flippant and emotional responses during this interview.' 'She's [LuPone] a very outspoken person – no news flash there. It's certainly her fault for choosing her words incorrectly,' the Tonys insider said. 19 LuPone issued an apology on social media, saying she was 'deeply sorry for the words I used during The New Yorker interview, particularly about Kecia Lewis, which were demeaning and disrespectful.' 19 One Tony's insider told The Post of LuPone: 'She's a very outspoken person – no news flash there. It's certainly her fault for choosing her words incorrectly.' 'Pre Patti LuPone drama, I would have said Nicole had [the Tony],' the Broadway source said. 'But after Patti went after Audra, people are saying it may help Audra in the long run.' Meanwhile, sources told The Post that McDonald, 54, was unhappy last month when she was unwittingly enlisted to present a Drama League award to 'Sunset Boulevard' star Nicole Scherzinger, who is up against McDonald at the Tonys. 19 George Clooney's 'Good Night, and Good Luck' set, then broke, a new record for the highest grossing week for a Broadway play, taking in more than $4.2 million in sales last week. 'They've been pitted against each other the entire season. She [McDonald] felt uncomfortable doing it, but ultimately went about doing it,' the Broadway source told The Post. Playing Mama Rose — which the Tonys insider compared to 'the 'Hamlet' and 'King Lear' of musical theater roles combined' — apparently hasn't been easy for McDonald, who, sources say, has missed several performances of the grueling show due to exhaustion. 19 The other big earner has been 'Othello,' starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, which made eyes water with box-office ticket prices that went above $900. Othello 'When Audra misses [a show] it's because she literally cannot perform — otherwise she'd be on that stage. It is Olympian,' the Tonys insider said, adding that Tony-nominated actors are 'doing the shows every night and by day they're campaigning.' Still, the Tonys insider pointed out one difference between McDonald and rival Scherzinger's 'Sunset Boulevard' run: 'Nicole has never missed a show.' Scherzinger, meanwhile, had her own mini-scandal when some accused her of being pro-MAGA after she commented on a photo of Russell Brand wearing a hat with the phrase 'Make Jesus First Again' — posting prayer hands and heart emoji and asking, 'Where do I get this hat?' 19 As for Best Actor in a Play, there is apparently no doubt that the 'Oh, Mary' phenomenon, Cole Escola, will walk away with the trophy.19 Escola, 38, wrote and has starred in 'Oh, Mary!' as Mary Todd Lincoln. When I commented on these posts, I made the mistake of not realizing that they could be easily interpreted as being politically related and I apologize to anyone who understandably reached that conclusion.' The Tonys insider called the whole thing nonsense, adding that Scherzinger is 'a devout Catholic. She's all about prayer. Nicole lives in her own world [and] she couldn't be further from the MAGA world. For her to get painted as MAGA is such BS.' As for Best Actor in a Play, there is apparently no doubt that the 'Oh, Mary' phenomenon, Cole Escola, will walk away with the trophy. Another surprise snub was Kieran Culkin for his role in the revival of 'Glengarry Glen Ross.' But we're told the actor will host a Tonys after-party at Pebble Bar to celebrate his former 'Succession' co-star Sarah Snook, who is said to have a strong shot at winning Best Actress in a Play for portraying 26 characters in 'The Picture of Dorian Gray.' 19 Another surprise snub was Kieran Culkin for his role in the revival of 'Glengarry Glen Ross.' 'It's been a fun season but also a grueling season,' the Tonys insider said. 'Everyone will be in the mood to party.'

Rod Stewart forced to cancel U.S. shows due to illness: "I'm devastated and sincerely apologize"
Rod Stewart said he is "devastated" after he was forced to cancel upcoming shows in the United States as he recovers from the flu ahead of his big festival gig. The 80-year-old singer took to Instagram to explain why he was canceling four shows and rescheduling two others as he continues his recovery. "I have to cancel and reschedule my next six concerts in June as I continue to recover from the flu," he wrote. "So sorry my friends. I'm devastated and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience to my fans. I'll be back on stage and will see you soon." He signed off "Sir Rod" with a broken heart emoji. It was not immediately clear how long Stewart has been recovering from the flu. Two shows in Rancho Mirage and Paso Robles, California, were rescheduled for September. Stewart recently performed at the American Music Awards and received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his career spanning more than 60 years. BBC News reported that Stewart is set to perform at the Glastonbury Festival later this month. The website reported the singer had previously said he intended to stop playing "large-scale world tours" at the end of 2025 but was "proud, ready and more than able to pleasure and titillate my friends at Glastonbury." His set is expected to draw some 100,000 fans. The other headliners at this year's Glastonbury Festival include The 1975, Neil Young and Olivia Rodrigo.
