Bay of Bengal emerges as a microcosm of a multipolar world
TOKYO -- In a scene open to interpretation as either a celebration of diversity or a sign of disunity, the leaders of seven Bay of Bengal nations -- each clad in distinct national or formal attire -- lined up for a group photo during last month's summit in Bangkok. The image stood in stark contrast to the choreographed displays at ASEAN summits, where leaders typically don matching batik shirts and link arms in a symbolic gesture of unity.
On April 4, these leaders met in person for the first time in seven years, convening in the Thai capital for a summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), a regional bloc that bridges South and Southeast Asia. The gathering offered a revealing glimpse into the region's complex and often fraught political landscape.

Myanmar's military extends ceasefire until June 30
Myanmar's ruling military has extended a ceasefire with pro-democracy forces until June 30. The extension was announced on Saturday. The military and pro-democracy forces separately declared a temporary ceasefire after a major earthquake struck central Myanmar in March. The aim was to prioritize relief efforts. Fighting has continued since the military coup in 2021. The military says March's quake has left more than 3,700 people dead and over 5,000 injured. It also says it decided on the latest extension to speed up the reconstruction and rehabilitation of affected areas. But a source from the pro-democracy camp told NHK that the military's ceasefire declaration is false and unacceptable, as the military is attacking schools, hospitals and other places where people gather. In May, the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations issued a statement calling for the extension and expansion of the ceasefire in Myanmar. But it remains uncertain whether the ceasefire will hold, as fighting appears to be ongoing. Local media reported last month that a military airstrike on a school in the northwestern region of Sagaing killed more than 20 children.

Defense Minister Nakatani Calls for Greater Cooperation in Shangri-La Dialogue Address; Rules-Based Order Being ‘Hollowed out'
Yomiuri Shimbun file photo Defense Minister Gen Nakatani SINGAPORE — Defense Minister Gen Nakatani gave an address at the Asia Security Summit in Singapore on Saturday in which he emphasized the importance of defense cooperation among Indo-Pacific countries and laid out a new cooperative framework. At the summit, which is also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, Nakatani also spoke about promoting cooperation between members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the United States, Australia and India, with China in mind. 'The rules-based international order is rapidly being hollowed out,' Nakatani said. Nakatani's address took place in the context of such factors as Russia's aggression against Ukraine and China's move to ignore a 2016 decision by the Arbitral Tribunal and strengthen its effective control of the South China Sea. AP Defense Minister Gen Nakatani delivers a speech during the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue summit in Singapore on Saturday. The defense minister expressed concern that 'rapid military buildups, including of nuclear weapons, and provocative military actions are on the rise' and said that such moves are 'large obstacles in maintaining a trustful relationship in security.' On the other hand, Nakatani welcomed ASEAN's expanded role in security, as well as the strengthening of the Japan-U.S. alliance and cooperation between Japan, the United States, Australia and the Philippines, calling such moves 'encouraging.' The cooperative framework that Nakatani proposed, which calls on the countries with common values and interests to expand their cooperation, is dubbed OCEAN (One Cooperative Effort Among Nations). He said that it is important for 'the defense authorities of those countries to create synergy by strengthening their cooperation.' In accordance with that principle, Nakatani said Japan will deepen its collaboration with ASEAN member countries through such assistance as improving their capabilities and transferring defense equipment to them. Japan, he said, would also deepen defense cooperation within the Japan-U.S.- South Korea and Japan-U.S.-Philippine trilateral groups. 'We should work to restore the rules-based international order,' Nakatani said. 'Japan will stay at the center of moves aimed at that.'

Nakatani Calls for Defense Cooperation in Indo-Pacific
News from Japan Politics May 31, 2025 16:05 (JST) Singapore, May 31 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, in a speech on Saturday, stressed the importance of promoting defense cooperation among countries in the Indo-Pacific region that share common values such as a rules-based international order. "Japan will remain at the center" of cooperation among Indo-Pacific countries, Nakatani said in the speech at the annual meeting of the Shangri-La Dialogue regional security forum in Singapore. China has stepped up its military activities in the South China Sea, while North Korea has repeatedly taken provocative actions, including launching ballistic missiles. "The region and the international community are facing an unprecedented crisis," Nakatani said. Without referring to the countries by name, he said China and North Korea are posing "major obstacles to maintaining a relationship of trust in the defense field." In responding to such a situation, Nakatani welcomed the revitalization of regional cooperation frameworks. He emphasized, "It is particularly important that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is expanding its security role." [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.] Jiji Press
