German-American dual citizen charged with planning attack on US Embassy in Tel Aviv

Yahoo25-05-2025

A dual American-German citizen appeared Sunday in federal court in Brooklyn on charges that he attempted to firebomb a branch of the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, according to law enforcement officials.
Joseph Neumeyer arrived in Israel in April and on May 19 he posted on his Facebook account, 'Join me this afternoon in Tel Aviv we are burning down the US. embassy' and 'join me as I burn down the embassy in Tel Aviv. Death to America. Death to Americans and f--- the west,' according to a criminal complaint.
That same day, Neumeyer arrived outside the branch office of the Embassy of the United States in Tel Aviv carrying a backpack, according to the complaint. Neumeyer approached and spat on a guard and the guard attempted to detain Neumeyer, who uttered profanities before turning and fleeing, leaving his backpack behind, the complaint said.

Law enforcement officials recovered from Neumeyer's backpack several bottles that had been turned into Molotov cocktails, according to the complaint.
He was arrested at the hotel where he was staying and deported from Israel to the U.S., according to authorities.
Neumeyer's social media accounts also contained threatening posts that, among other things, called for the assassination of President Donald Trump, according to prosecutors.
"Neumayer was arrested earlier this week in Israel -- when Embassy officials discovered a backpack carrying multiple explosive devices and a social media account allegedly linked to Neumayer detailing intent to attack the Embassy and threatening President Trump," FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X.
"He will now face justice," Patel wrote.

Portugal police launch new search for Madeleine McCann

Portuguese police have launched a new search for Madeleine McCann in Portugal's Algarve region where the three-year-old British girl disappeared in 2007, following a request from German authorities. The country's investigative Judicial Police said in a statement it was executing a European Investigation Order on behalf of the public prosecutor's office in the German city of Braunschweig, which in 2022 formally identified German citizen Christian Brueckner as an official suspect in Madeleine's disappearance. It added that "a wide range of investigations, namely search warrants" would be carried out this week in Portugal's Municipality of Lagos and all evidence seized would be handed over to Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). The search for traces of the child's body will focus on an area between Praia da Luz, a civil parish belonging to Lagos, and one of the houses where Brueckner lived when Madeleine disappeared 18 years ago, according to news reports by CNN Portugal and German newspaper Bild. Braunschweig prosecutors told Reuters "criminal procedural measures" related to the case were taking place in Portugal involving the BKA and Portuguese law enforcement but did not provide further details. London's Metropolitan Police said it was aware of searches carried out by the BKA in Portugal, adding the force was not present there but would "support our international colleagues where necessary". German police said in June 2020 that Madeleine was assumed dead and that Brueckner was likely responsible. Brueckner has denied any involvement and has not been charged with any crime related to the case. The convicted child abuser and drug dealer is behind bars in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve. The last search for Madeleine was carried out in May 2023, when the police combed an inland reservoir in the Algarve but didn't find anything.

Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee works with police to enhance safety in wake of Colorado attack

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Following the attack in Boulder, Colorado, that left 12 people hurt this weekend, the CEO of the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, Shepard Englander, said the local Jewish community is 'heartbroken and outraged.' 'This was a targeted terror attack against people because of what they believe,' Englander said. 'America was founded so that we would have a place where people can believe whatever they believe and not be harassed and killed. This was not just an attack on Jews. This was an attack on America and what it stands for.' FBI says 8 injured in Colorado attack by man with makeshift flamethrower who yelled 'Free Palestine' Safety is a concern among those in the Jewish community locally, and the Federation is working with local law enforcement to ensure the community stays safe. 'We have had to invest more than we ever wanted to in security professionals and we are so grateful to have some of the best,' Englander said. 'We would rather be spending the money helping people, connecting people in programs, but now we are going to have to even spend more which is not what any of us want, but it is absolutely necessary because everyone needs to be safe and not afraid to come out and be part of a community and celebrate their traditions.' Englander spoke with local law enforcement Monday about safety moving forward. The sheriff's office said Hoffman was briefed on the incident in Colorado and, as a result, requested extra patrols near local synagogues and the Jewish Federation. 'Our intelligence unit is monitoring for anything suspicious that might possibly be related to or inspired by the Boulder incident,' a sheriff's office spokesperson wrote. 'The sheriff says the main reason for these meetings is to share information and communicate so that we are being proactive to prevent an incident in our community. We will continue monitoring closely.' During a stop in Sarasota Monday morning, 8 On Your Side asked Governor Ron DeSantis about the state's response. He described antisemitism as a 'huge problem' across the country and called the recent attacks 'sick.' 'We will continue to respond the way that we always responded,' DeSantis said. 'This type of stuff will not fly in Florida, and we will do what we can obviously to prevent, and certainly if anybody makes the mistake of doing what this guy in Colorado … you will absolutely live to regret that.' Englander spoke briefly with Gov. DeSantis during his stop in Sarasota. 'I thanked him for his support and he said 'let us know what you need,'' Englander said. 'America is a place where the Jewish people have had such friendship and support; being reminded of it brings tears to my eyes.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Socialist Kshama Sawant announces bid to defeat U.S. Rep. Adam Smith

Former socialist Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant announced Monday that she's running to unseat longtime U.S. Rep. Adam Smith. Smith, a Democrat, has represented Washington's 9th Congressional district for nearly three decades. The district stretches over portions of Seattle and Bellevue, as well as Seattle's southeast suburbs. Sawant served on Seattle City Council from 2014 to 2024. She left that role last year to launch Workers Strike Back, a national labor movement. In a Federal Election Commission document filed last week, Sawant is listed as an Independent. 'Most of the time, working people have no political representation under capitalism,' Sawant said Monday during a livestreamed news conference. 'Both the Democrats and Republicans serve the interests of the billionaires, and both are war-mongering parties down to their bones.' Early in her political career, Sawant spearheaded a push to secure a $15 hourly minimum wage for Seattle. She has fought to impose more taxes on big businesses such as Amazon and is an advocate for rent-control efforts. Sawant is calling for 'an immediate end to the genocidal war and occupation of Gaza,' according to her campaign website. She wants to see more funding for health care, schools and jobs, and is demanding that the U.S. cease all military aid to 'both the Israeli state and the bloody inter-imperialist proxy war in Ukraine.' Sawant has also criticized Smith as 'pro-corporate' and a 'warmonger.' 'We aren't going to stop right-wing attacks and defeat Trump by staying silent and allowing Democrats like Adam Smith to remain in power,' she said at Monday's event. In a statement to McClatchy, Smith welcomed Sawant to the race. But he contends Sawant played a part in ensuring President Donald Trump's return to the White House by campaigning against Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, and for Green Party candidate Jill Stein. The Congress member said Sawant deployed 'divisive' and 'extreme' tactics during her time on Seattle City Council. 'Voters in Washington's 9th Congressional District deserve thoughtful, effective leadership focused on real results — not ideological stunts,' he said. 'This election will offer a clear contrast, and I look forward to the challenge.' At the June 2 campaign announcement, Sawant condemned other progressive Democrats. She took aim at U.S. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, accusing them of having long since yielded to their party's 'corporate and war-mongering agenda.'
