Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is one of the coolest bits of tech I've seen in years, and it's finally coming in a speaker you can buy

The first speaker that works with Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, the TCL Z100, has finally been unveiled – though as with most announcements in these days of regularly changing tariffs, there's no exact price or release date yet.
Announced back in 2023, the idea with Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is that you don't need to think about where you're placing the speakers to get home theater sound – you don't even need to have pairs of them placed symmetrically.
Put one next to the TV, one on the shelf to your right, one directly behind you – whatever's convenient for your space is fine. The system will then map the placement acoustically and will adjust the speaker output to give the best version of Dolby Atmos-powered surround sound that it can from those positions.
You can have up to four of the TCL Z100 speakers in one configuration, and each speaker is a 1.1.1 audio configuration on its own (a forward-facing driver, a bass driver, and an upfiring driver) – though when combined, they can produce something akin to virtual 7.1.2 audio, according to TCL. That includes a compatible TV providing two channels, including the center channel.
Speaking of which, the speakers must be connected to a suitable Dolby Atmos FlexConnect hub, which can handle the mapping and processing. Right now, that means getting one of TCL's 2025 mini-LED TVs.
TCL is the only company offering products for the launch of FlexConnect, though other companies have pledged support in the future – and it should also be possible for one of the best soundbars to be the FlexConnect hub in the future.
They also support playing music over Bluetooth – two can work in a stereo pair to play music from your phone.
As you might expect for a Dolby-specific product, there's no built-in DTS support. However, the TCL TVs that are necessary to make the system work all support DTS:X, and the idea is that they'll decode the DTS sound (including DTS:X), process it in 7.1.2 channels, and then convert it for the virtual surround system for your configuration, so you should get something close to full-fat DTS.
Although there's no price, we've been told by TCL's European arm to expect a price approaching €300 – and usually Euro and US Dollar prices convert very closely, though the final amount will depend on the latest tariffs. UK prices will be close to the Euro price.
I've seen this technology in action a few times since its announcement in 2023, and it's very impressive – though the speakers I saw it demoed with were more elaborate than the TCL Z100 have turned out to be.
Those had side-firing drivers as well as forward and up-firing drivers, potentially giving them more control over the steering of virtual sound. It was amazing in my demos how two speakers – one at the front to the right of the TV, and one behind and to the left of me – could create a broadly immersive sound with steering of sounds in basically all directions.
Whether the Z100 can do this as well remains to be seen, and either way, the system isn't going to match just having speakers in all the right places – but that's just not possible for everyone.
I think there's real value in having speakers that can be placed not just imperfectly, but in totally odd places, and still get something more immersive than TV sound alone from them.
The one other thing missing from this announcement, though, is bass. I've been told that the FlexConnect system can support a subwoofer, but there's no sign of one here – hopefully that will come before too long.
Update: Dolby and TCL have informed me that a subwoofer that's compatible with the system is coming in summer 2025, which also gives us an indication of when to expect these speakers to launch.

Karate Kid: Legends star Jackie Chan looks back on the divisive Rush Hour 3, and agrees it's the weakest movie in the franchise: "Too much money is no good"

Rush Hour star Jackie Chan has ranked all three films from the action comedy franchise, and it sounds as though Rush Hour 3 is his least favourite. "I don't know," Chan said when asked by Buzzfeed to rank the Rush Hour movies from his favorite to least favorite entry. "You know what, the first one: little money, little time. We shot it like, 'Go, go, go, go!' The second one: a lot of money, a lot of time. The third one: too much money, too much time. Too much money is no good." Starring Chan and Chris Tucker, the Rush Hour trilogy kicked off in 1998, with the first movie following two squabbling cops from different cultures who team up to save the kidnapped daughter of a diplomat. However, Chan's ranking does actually line up with each movie's critical reception. Rush hour, which is Chan's favorite, currently sits at 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, and its 2001 sequel, Rush Hour 2, stands at 51%. But the 2007 third installment, which Chan ranked last, has a less-than-impressive 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and performed the worst out of the three at the box office despite having the biggest budget. Rush Hour 3, which reunites the duo in Paris, is also the most divisive movie in the franchise, with the widest gap between the critical score and audience score at 63%. Despite the third movie's mixed response, Chan still seems game to make Rush Hour 4, which he teased in 2022. However, fans don't have to wait for Rush Hour 4 to catch Chan on the big screen, as the star returns to one of his other popular franchises in Karate Kid: Legends. After starring in the The Karate Kid remake in 2010, Chan reprises his role as Mr. Han and trains a new student alongside the original Karate Kid, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio). Karate Kid: Legends opens in theaters in the US on May 30, and is out in UK cinemas now. Now that we are well into the 2025 movie schedule, and getting closer to the release of Freakier Friday (which brings her together with Freaky Friday co-star Jamie Lee Curtis again), she's been talking about coming back to the profession that made her famous while promoting the upcoming film. Now, Lohan's opening up about beauty standards in Hollywood. Even though Lindsay Lohan has already admitted to being a bit 'jealous' of the young stars who are coming up today, the former child star would likely confirm that one thing hasn't changed much, and that's the Hollywood beauty standard. People (and women in particular) in the entertainment industry are pretty much still expected to look as young, thin, and fashionable as possible when not in character, a fact that has led to much negative commentary about how stars like Selena Gomez, Kelly Clarkson, and many others look. In speaking with Saturday Night Live star Chloe Fineman (who has a role in Freakier Friday) for Elle Magazine, the topic turned to beauty standards when the Just My Luck leading lady noted that she's currently working on a line of beauty products (much like the aforementioned Gomez, whose Rare Beauty has made her a billionaire). That admission led to this quick exchange: Lohan: Everyone does Botox. Fineman: Last night at dinner, I was with somebody, and they're like, 'I've never had it.'And I was like, 'What? Are you kidding?' Lohan: Who are you? It's like, 'You lie.' I know a lot of people, even those who don't face near constant public scrutiny about their appearance, have had Botox. Many of us simply do not want to be wrinkled or to appear to have physically aged at all, despite the fact that everyone will do just that at some point. However, it hadn't really occurred to me that it would be so hard to buck the Botox trend in Hollywood that it's seemingly impossible to come upon someone in the industry who hasn't experimented with using the substance to erase as many wrinkles as possible at least once. Stars have begun to speak out about unrealistic beauty standards, and Lohan's co-star, Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis has been among them. In 2023, after singer Karol G came out against her heavily retouched GQ cover, Curtis spoke up about how things like that hurt all women and contribute to us feeling ashamed of ourselves. Other stars have done similar things in recent years, like Florence Pugh discussing how harshly women's bodies are judged, Halle Berry talking about 'challenging' stereotypes of older women, and Demi Moore revealing the 'tremendous gift' of aging. Speaking of that beauty line that Lohan is developing, Fineman did ask for more info on how she takes care of her own health and beauty when the Mean Girls star admitted to being 'crazy about my skin and health.' Lohan added: Oh, God, I don't even know how to answer that. I drink this juice every morning. It's like carrot, ginger, lemon, olive oil, apple. I also drink a lot of green tea, a lot of water. I'm a big pickled beets person, so I put them in almost everything. My skin care is very specific. I'm trying out some serums now that I'm doing—I'm testing them. Also, I'm a big believer in ice-cold water on your face when you wake up. I drink lemon juice a lot; I also put tons of chia seeds in my water. Eye patches, I do every morning. I'm into lasers. Honestly, all of that sounds fine to me except the lasers. They've been used to clear up a number of skin concerns, like acne and, yes, even wrinkles, but I'll just have to turn into an old bog witch eventually if that's the best way to stop one from looking old. And, you know what? I'm totally fine with that. It'll probably finally keep the neighborhood kids out of my yard once they get a look at me.
