Sahitya Akademi winner Parienkar''s Konkani stories collection translated into English

Hindustan Times3 days ago

New Delhi, Thirteen short stories of Sahitya Akademi winner Prakash Parienkar, originally written in Konkani and portraying village life in Goa's forested region Sattari, have been translated into English.
Through these 13 narratives in "The Bitter-Fruit Tree and Other Stories", Parienkar weaves together a web of social, cultural, and agricultural traditions that define the lives of the people in the northeastern region of the coastal state.
Published by Niyogi Books, the short stories have been translated by Vidya Pai.
The stories are set against the backdrop of the Mhadei river, which flows through the landscape, nourishing the crops and the people who tend to them.
Parienkar's writing is infused with a deep understanding of the natural world and the interconnectedness of human life with the land. He writes about the diverse flora and fauna of the region, the folk customs and religious traditions, and the struggles of the villagers as they face the fury of nature or revel in its bounty.
One of the most striking aspects of Parienkar's stories is the way he captures the sheer diversity of life in Sattari. From the kumer farming practices of the past to the puran farming methods that are unique to this region, Parienkar's stories are filled with details that bring the world of the villagers to life.
The stories also highlight the challenges faced by the villagers, including the impact of government policies on their traditional way of life.
The characters in Parienkar's stories are multidimensional and complex, with their own unique struggles and triumphs. The women, in particular, are powerfully drawn, handling domestic responsibilities and working on the land with a strength and resilience that is inspiring.
Parienkar's stories also explore the complex social dynamics of village life, including the hierarchy of caste and the distinct roles played by different communities.
The tussle between native residents and outsiders is another theme that runs through many of the stories.

Yuvika Chaudhary REACTS to Prince Narula's link up rumours with Nora Fatehi during Bigg Boss 9: 'When you're young, working, and single...'

Yuvika Chaudhary addressed rumors linking Prince Narula to Nora Fatehi during Bigg Boss 9, emphasizing the difference between on-screen perceptions and real-life understanding. She values Prince's emotional honesty and acknowledges his past experiences, believing it fosters a stronger, more relaxed relationship. Yuvika appreciates that Prince has lived fully, ensuring no future regrets, and cherishes their friendship-turned-marriage built on open communication. Yuvika Chaudhary opened up about the swirling rumours linking her husband, Prince Narula, to actress Nora Fatehi during their Bigg Boss 9 days. In a candid conversation, she reflected on how perceptions can often be misleading and shares her honest take on love, trust, and understanding beyond the camera's lens. When asked about handling the rumours before marrying the Roadies actor, Yuvika told Bollywood Bubble that people often only see what someone chooses to show on screen. However, meeting the person in real life reveals a much deeper and better side. She acknowledged that nobody is perfect, and true understanding comes from personal experiences, which can never be fully captured on screen. She compared it to friendship—only by spending time with someone do you truly get to know them. She mentioned that in today's world, people often judge others without really knowing them. However, she chose not to judge Prince and instead saw him as a hardworking person who is open with his emotions—whether it's anger or love, he expresses it fully. While this can lead to challenges, she accepted it as part of his true personality and felt she understood the kind of person he really is. Yuvika further shared that initially, she felt the need to appear a certain way on screen, dealing with rumors and link-ups. But over time, she realized that when you're young, working, and single, it's your own life to live. It's only when you're with someone that you truly see their loyalty and real character. She wanted a partner who had experienced life fully, so there would be no regrets later. She believes that when people feel restricted, they crave freedom even more. So, she wants her partner to have the freedom to explore and grow, feeling relaxed in personal life. She knows he has traveled a lot and lived fully, and she's aware of his journey. She also joked that they started out as friends, sharing open conversations where she even teased him about his girlfriends. That connection grew naturally, and neither of them expected it would lead to marriage. Check out our list of the latest Hindi , English , Tamil , Telugu , Malayalam , and Kannada movies . Madras HC seeks explanation from CBFC for denying censor certificate to Vetrimaaran's 'Manushi': 'Filmmakers are already suffering from a lot of difficulties'

The Madras High Court has raised strong concerns over the Central Board of Film Certification 's (CBFC) refusal to grant clearance to the Tamil film 'Manushi'. It has questioned the board's failure to clearly identify which parts of the film were deemed objectionable. Madras HC sought explanation The issue reached the court after acclaimed filmmaker Vetrimaaran filed a petition on Tuesday (June 3) . According to The Hindu, he challenged the CBFC's decision to withhold certification for 'Manushi', a film he produced and which was directed by filmmaker N. Gopi Nainar. Vetrimaaran argued that the board had not provided any clarity on which specific scenes, dialogues, visuals, or musical elements were problematic. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, who presided over the matter, expressed concern about the opaque process followed by the CBFC. 'Making a movie is a part of the right to speech and expression. As such, the filmmakers are already suffering from a lot of difficulties. You cannot deny certification for an entire movie without specifying the objectionable portions and expect a filmmaker to shoot the entire movie afresh,' the judge reportedly said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo The court observed that unless the CBFC clearly listed the scenes it found offensive, the filmmaker would be left in the dark and risk incurring heavy financial losses due to re-shoots or delays. Court's order to CBFC The CBFC has now been asked to either submit a detailed list of the objectionable parts of 'Manushi' or arrange a screening with Vetrimaaran and indicate the scenes that require changes. The deadline for this has been set for June 16. During the hearing, it was conveyed to the court that both the examining and revising committees of the CBFC had unanimously recommended withholding certification. Their objections reportedly included allegations that the film challenged the integrity of the state, contained contemptuous content, criticised government policies, perpetuated stereotypes contributing to a north-south divide, and depicted scenes allegedly against national interests. Vetrimaaran talks about Nitish Veera in an emotional video In response to these assertions, the judge asked the CBFC to file an explanation by June 11. About Manushi 'Manushi', starring Andrea Jeremiah in the lead, also features Nasser, Tamizh, Hakkim Shah, and Balaji Sakthivel in pivotal roles. The film's music has been composed by maestro Ilaiyaraaja . Check out our list of the latest Hindi , English , Tamil , Telugu , Malayalam , and Kannada movies .
