Shohei Ohtani's recent incorporation of sliders and curveballs into his rehabilitation routine represents a pivotal breakthrough in the Los Angeles Dodgers' championship aspirations.
The two-way sensation successfully executed breaking pitches during Tuesday's pre-game bullpen session at Dodger Stadium, marking his first departure from the fastball-splitter combination that has dominated his recovery program since returning from dual surgeries. This development signals that Ohtani's reconstructed right elbow and repaired left shoulder are responding positively to increased workload demands, positioning the Dodgers closer to regaining their ace pitcher.

breaking ball breakthrough
signals an accelerated recovery timeline
Shohei Ohtani's special ability with a breaking ball is valuable in many ways, not just for its variety. His surgically fixed ulnar collateral ligament can handle the stress of throwing sliders and curveballs. Manager Dave Roberts said that Ohtani is now able to throw 50 pitches in a row, similar to what he would do in a real game.
This approach was developed by the Dodgers after Ohtani had his September 2023 Tommy John surgery and November shoulder labrum repair.

The team continues to say that hitting in minor league games is the main step it needs to see before allowing him to play in the Majors. If Ohtani continues to progress, baseball analysts believe he may be ready to take the mound as a starter sometime after the All-Star break ends.
Los Angeles Dodgers' rotation desperately needs Shohei Ohtani's return amid an injury crisis
Ohtani's presence in the rotation is more important now because the Dodgers' pitchers currently rank 23rd with a poor ERA of 4.22. The injuries to Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, and Roki Sasaki have hurt the team's rotation, while Blake Treinen, Evan Phillips, and Kirby Yates have been missing from the bullpen.
Andrew Friedman, as President of Baseball Operations, accepted the team's calm approach after Ohtani's two surgeries, and he expected no full-season pitching. The Dodgers have decided to avoid Minor League rehabilitation and will use simulated games to get Ohtani ready for the big leagues once he faces batters.
Ohtani keeps producing offensively, sporting a .311/.405/.668 slash line and 17 home runs, which is tied for the most in the MLB.

Referees to wear cameras at Club World Cup in US, but FIFA to hide controversies
FIFA will introduce eye-level cameras for referees at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup , which kicks off in Miami on Saturday, designed to give fans a unique perspective by showing exactly what officials see during the match. However, the technology seems geared more towards enhancing the viewing experience for television audiences than improving the game itself. FIFA has stated that only 'non-controversial' footage from the referee cameras will be shown during broadcasts. While the exact definition of 'non-controversial' hasn't been clarified, it's clear that critical moments — such as goal-scoring incidents or potential red cards — are unlikely to be included, raising concerns about transparency and selective presentation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Indonesia (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo While the use of referee cams is being hailed as a step towards transparency and innovation, critics argue that withholding controversial clips undermines the very purpose of the technology and raises questions about accountability in high-stakes matches. 'It is a trial,' Pierluigi Collina , veteran official and chairman of the FIFA referees committee , said on Wednesday. "What will be the future? We will see. Live Events 'We have said that we want to, let's say, offer a new experience to TV viewers. We want to show something, let's say, entertaining. I don't think that we always need to think of the controversial or potentially controversial incidents on the field of play.' The footage from the referee's eye-level cameras will be reviewed before being broadcast, and they will be deferred live. Another innovation set for the Club World Cup — a month-long tournament in the United States featuring 32 of the world's top clubs — is the live display of VAR review footage on big screens inside the stadium for the first time. This move aims to increase transparency for fans in attendance, allowing them to see exactly what officials are reviewing during critical moments of the match.

England coach Brendon McCullum (Photo by) England head coach Brendon McCullum is confident about his team's bowling lineup ahead of the five-match Test series against India starting June 20. The series marks India's new era without senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma , while also beginning their ICC World Test Championship cycle. McCullum expressed his views on the team's preparation and bowling attack while speaking to Sky Sports Cricket. "It is important the guys refresh. We know where we want to get to as a Test team," he said. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The England coach highlighted the team's bowling options despite some unavailable players. "We have a nice, varied bowling attack with Chris Woakes , Sam Cook, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue for the high-pace element," McCullum stated. He praised young spinner Shoaib Bashir's progress in Test cricket. Bashir has claimed 58 wickets in 16 Tests since his debut last year, averaging 36.39 with four five-wicket hauls and best figures of 6/81. "We know we are going to be tested against India, and they will arrive prepared. Bethell's recent performances include three fifties from the number 3 position during the winter tour of New Zealand. McCullum praised Bethell's development and potential. "Bethell has a good life in front of him. For a 21-year-old, he's got a real poise, and that allows him to go out there and be present and show off his flair and talent. The world is his oyster. He's already becoming a leader in the dressing room which is what you want." Quiz: Who's that IPL player? The coach also highlighted the promising performances of Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett. "Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett have reminded me of Duckett and Zak Crawley in the Test game. We know how good Duckett is, but the power that Smith possesses is amazing. These guys are fearless, and if you add the craft, then you hope you end up with a rounded player." England's team composition has changed significantly since their 4-1 series loss in India last year. James Anderson has retired, while Jonny Bairstow, Ben Foakes, and Ollie Robinson are no longer part of the squad. India has also undergone changes with R Ashwin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma retiring. Shubman Gill will lead the team for the first time. India, seeking their first Test series victory in England since 2007, has sent several players ahead to compete for India A against the Lions. The remaining squad members will arrive in the UK on Friday.
