NYC affordable housing lotteries closing by May 1
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Some applications for affordable housing lotteries in New York City are set to close by May 1.
The listings for the lotteries can be found on NYC Housing Connect, which is the city's online portal for affordable rentals and homes across the five boroughs. Anyone interested in one of the available housing lotteries can apply through NYC Housing Connect.
How to apply for affordable housing in NYC
Here's a list of lotteries that won't be available within the next few days:Available units and monthly rent: One bedroom for $2,515 and two bedrooms at $2,790
Income eligibility: $86,229 – $218,010
Amenities include air conditioning, parking, bike storage and a recreation room
Pet-friendly for animals up to 30 lbs.
Tenants will have to pay for electricity, including stove, heat and hot water
Lottery ends on April 28
91 Bruckner Blvd Apartments
Available units and monthly rent: One bedroom for $3,661 and two bedrooms at $4,376
Income eligibility: $125,520 – $218,010
Residents have amenities like a garage, fully equipped gym and car charging station
Pet-friendly
Tenants must pay for electricity, including stove and heat; hot water is included in the rent
Lottery ends on April 28
2070 Honeywell Avenue Apartments
Available units and monthly rent: One bedroom for $2,440, two bedrooms at $2,484 and three bedrooms for $2,762
Income eligibility: $83,658 – $218,010
Air conditioning, shared laundry room, recreation room, package lockers, garage and bike storage, elevator and an on-site resident manager are the amenities included in the rent
No pets allowed, with exceptions for service animals
Tenants are responsible for electricity, stove, heat and hot water
Lottery ends on May 1

Available amenities include a patio, washers/dryers available for purchase, a recreational room, a gym, a terrace, storage, garage and bike storage and laundry services
Pet policy is only service animals allowed as an exception
Residents pay for electricity including stove and heat; hot water included in the rent

The city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development recently announced changes to affordable housing lotteries. Apartments that become available when someone moves out can now be listed on HPD's website or other popular rental portals, allowing applicants to skip the affordable housing application altogether.

New Homey app helps simplify affordable housing lottery application
NEW YORK (PIX11) — Two men set out on a mission to make applying for affordable housing easier for New Yorkers. Co-founders Wout Stienaers and Piet Goris launched the app Homey in March to shorten and simplify the process for applying for New York City housing lotteries. More Local News 'Homey is sort of like a translator in between our users and then the housing connect system,' said Stienaers in an interview with PIX11 News. App users create a profile and answer questions based on those asked by NYC Housing Connect. Homey focuses on asking the questions most needed to assess someone's eligibility for the lottery and eliminates some of the more detailed questions about things like one's assets. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State After a Homey profile is created, a mirror profile is created on NYC Housing Connect using the information from the app. Users will then get alerts for any housing lotteries they're eligible for and can have Homey apply on their behalf. Applicants can continue to track their submissions and get real-time updates on their lotteries through the Homey app. How to apply for affordable housing in NYC 'We get all the emails and all the information from Housing Connect, we translate that to our users, and then we translate the input from our users to Housing Connect, and that way it makes it way easier for the users to actually use the system,' Stienaers said. The co-founder says the idea came from his own experience of trying to navigate NYC Housing Connect to apply for affordable housing. He's now working on adding new features to apply for Section 8 and housing vouchers. 'New Yorkers are busy. Between work, family, and life, they don't have time to constantly monitor new lotteries or deal with confusing paperwork,' said Stienaers. The Homey app is one of the recent services aimed at making affordable housing easier to obtain for New Yorkers. 6 million applied to just 10K affordable housing units last year: HPD
NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – In 2024, around six million households applied to just 10,000 open affordable housing units, according to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development. That means, on average, every applicant had just a 0.2% chance of securing an affordable unit. The figure does not include units earmarked for homeless applicants. More Local News HPD officials on Tuesday testified to the New York City Council on its affordable housing lottery system, NYC Housing Connect, which City Council Member Pierina Ana Sanchez called 'flawed.' 'The technology has made it harder, not easier, for New Yorkers to find an affordable apartment that meets their needs,' Sanchez said. In Fiscal Year 2024, 9,035 applicants were approved for new affordable housing units, and 3,280 more at the beginning of Fiscal Year 2025, according to the Preliminary Mayor's Management Report. Even for those lucky people, the process was fairly lengthy. In 2024, the median length of time for an application to be approved was over six months, according to HPD. Only 24% of applicants were approved within three months.
