Rickie Fowler has faced a challenging season this year, struggling to find his rhythm on the course. The orange-loving golfer has teed off in 11 events but has managed only three top-25 finishes so far.
For Fowler fans, his major performances have been equally disappointing. While the golf world witnessed spectacular victories at the Masters and PGA Championship, Fowler failed to qualify for the Masters and missed the cut at Quail Hollow this year.
This is in stark contrast to his dominant 2014 season, where he finished in the top 5 in all four Majors.
But just when it seemed like things couldn't get worse, Fowler found himself at the center of a rules controversy during the first round of the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Fowler's fence dilemma sparked debate with PGA Tour officials
During the first round, Fowler was already struggling, but things took a turn for the worse on the 14th hole. His tee shot sailed through the trees, landing just an inch away from a barbed-wire fence.

This position led to a discussion with two PGA Tour officials.
Fowler, believing he deserved free relief, cracked a joke before the debate escalated: "So if I hit and pull it off, do I get like a shot off?"
However, Pete Dachisen, the first rules official, disagreed, arguing that Fowler's plan to take the shot was "unrealistic."
The frustrated Fowler, prompting his caddie, Ricky Romano, to step in:
"I mean, if you're going to hit it, you should get relief because you're standing on it. ... He said he's going to hit it regardless," Romano said to the rules official.
Dachisen was then joined by Robby Ware, another rules official, for a second opinion. Ware also disagreed, stating that the fence likely ran underneath Fowler's ball, making the shot even more difficult.
The long conversation turned into a back-and-forth exchange between Fowler and Ware. Ware asked, "If the path's not here, you're not standing on the path, would you take that shot on?"
Fowler responded, explaining, "I'm going to right now just because the other options aren't great."
Ware then came up with another option: "OK, the other option is obviously you could take an unplayable on the path and end up over there. That's one of your other options.
The question is whether it's a reasonable shot for you to play if you weren't standing on the cart path."
But Fowler wasn't convinced. "Well, there's not really another option," he shot back.
Ware countered further, stating, "There is, but not a free relief option. ... Honestly, with the proximity to the fence and if the cart path wasn't here, I don't feel like you would take that shot.
"I feel that that's too risky because of the proximity of the club and the fence and the direction of the play."
Fowler stood his ground against the Tour officials
Despite the officials' skepticism, Fowler decided to take the shot anyway. His ball maneuvered through the trees, landing in the rough to the right of the fairway.
From there, he made a bogey 5. The 36-year-old then finished with an even-par 70.
A PGA Tour Live announcer praised the shot, calling it, "An amazing shot."

But the incident continued to take over social media. It didn't just stir debate among golf fans, but even the broadcasters were puzzled.
One announcer stated, "There's no recourse and the shot's been played, but they say, OK, it's unreasonable that you would do it, and then he did it."
According to Rule 16 of the USGA, players are generally allowed free relief from abnormal course conditions except in a penalty area.
Here's the full statement: "These conditions are not treated as part of your challenge of playing the course, and you are generally allowed free relief except in a penalty area. You normally take relief by dropping a ball in a relief area based on the nearest point of complete relief."
What do you think? Did Fowler deserve relief, or was the ruling fair? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Dodgers' Max Muncy Remains Possible DFA Candidate as Trade Deadline Looms

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers have shown this season they are ruthless when it comes to doing what is best for the organization. Longtime Dodgers Chris Taylor and Austin Barnes were released last month after multi-year spells in Los Angeles. The Dodgers cited doing what was best for the team as the rationale for moving on. If Los Angeles holds true to its word, third baseman Max Muncy may be the next to go as the trade deadline nears. While he had a strong game Wednesday night, it's been a rough season overall. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 02: Max Muncy #13 of the Los Angeles Dodgers reacts to his fly out during the eighth inning against the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium on June 02, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. More"No one has needed more resilience this season than Muncy, who suffered through a woeful opening month on both sides of the ball and was beginning to feel the ire of a ruthlessly demanding fan base," wrote Jack Martin for the Los Angeles Times. Muncy got off to a slow start this season, hitting just .194 at the end of April and barely bumping it above the Mendoza line at the end of May by hitting .220. His average currently sits at .226, but he's struggling to be consistently produce for the Dodgers. Even though his bat is a step above what it was at the beginning of the season, his defense is still lackluster. "He's had to go through some adversities, and it certainly hasn't been linear for him, whether it be the defense or the droughts offensively and kind of hearing noise from the outside," Roberts told reporters. "But he's built a nice hard shell in the sense of, just really trying to put his head down and keep the blinders on and trying to focus on whatever situation is at hand at the moment." As much as putting your head down and focusing on the moment is good for Muncy, the Dodgers can't continue to trot him out to third base every day and just wait for him to improve. There's a reason Los Angeles is reportedly keeping an eye on Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon. The Dodgers know an upgrade is necessary to push for back-to-back World Series titles. Time is ticking for Muncy to turn it around, and it seems as if the end of July is his deadline as well as the trade deadline. At YouTube Brandcast, Lady Gaga, ‘Hot Ones' & NFL Help Video Giant Mark 20 Creator-Shaped Years

At YouTube Brandcast on Wednesday night, the finale of a three-day blitz of upfront presentations in New York, Lady Gaga achieved the rarest of things: a standing ovation and screams of enthusiasm from a crowd of advertisers. The pop star's scorching 20-minute set closed things on a high note and received the opposite of the usually jaded reactions, but the event had already been a substantive one before she stepped onstage. The 20th anniversary of YouTube earlier this year served as the framework for the presentation, with appearances and remarks reflecting the milestone. Chargers NFL Game For Free From Brazil This September - Update Netflix Releases NFL Christmas Gameday Schedule With Cowboys Vs. Commanders & Lions Vs. Vikings 'In just two decades, YouTube has reshaped how we watch entertainment,' CEO Neil Mohan said. Live events, from concerts to sports to many other kinds, have come to be one of YouTube's foundational elements as technology improvements have enabled more seamless livestreams. 'We want to bring more of these moments to fans everywhere,' Mohan said. One example in September will be an NFL game in Brazil, streamed on YouTube in full for the first time. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell took the stage at the Lincoln Center presentation and joined Chief Business Officer Mary Ellen Coe to mark the step-up in the relationship between the league and the video giant. The expanded deal encompasses a flag football game during Super Bowl week, which last year drew 6 million viewers. Coe also announced a new initiative to give ad buyers a chance to get in on key cultural moments. Brands can collaborate with YouTube creators and properties like this month's PGA Championship (or award shows like the Oscars and Emmys, plus a number of other events) to create custom ads. Befitting the night's themes, MrBeast (aka Jimmy Donaldson) made an appearance. With 394 million followers, he has long been the standard-bearer for the creator community. 'People ask me if I'm going Hollywood. Why?' he said. 'The future of entertainment is not in Hollywood. It's happening right here, right now, on YouTube.' Popular YouTuber Brittany Broski (aka Brittany Tomlinson) interviewed another longtime creator, Sean Evans, who hosts interview series Hot Ones. Evans recently participated in an $82.5 million deal to buy the property from BuzzFeed, giving him an ownership stake in the chat show. 'Ownership, equity, and having a stake in the game is like a natural state for a creative person,' he said. 'We are far past the days when a production company or studio is bigger than the person creating the content.' Asked about the enduring appeal of his 10-year-old show, Evans said, 'It pierces the façade of celebrity. … We knock them off the pedestal and take it down to a relatable level.'
