Failure to finish drain work by admin to leave city out in rain
Bhopal: With the approaching monsoon, drainage infrastructure in city remains insufficient, despite clearing blockages, as the completion of the AMRUT project, initiated in 2017, is still pending.
Additionally, poor sewer maintenance compounds the problem, leading to waterlogging, traffic snarls and anticipated hardships for residents during the rainy season. The Rs 15 crore budget allocated for sewer maintenance in FY 2025-26 shows a 12 percent reduction from the previous year's funding. This could potentially impact cleaning operations and increase monsoon-related difficulties if not addressed promptly.
Sewage and stormwater channels blocked with sediment, plastic refuse and building waste present risks of overflow and disease spread. While the Rs 3.50 crore provision for new sewage equipment provides an opportunity to improve cleaning activities, rapid and planned implementation remains crucial.
Substantial rainfall causes severe flooding in susceptible regions including Arera Colony, Hamidia Road and Kolar Road.

The stretch from Bhopal Talkies to Bharat Talkies floods rapidly during heavy rain, while underpasses at Chhola, Nishatpura and Habibganj become inundated. Unauthorised structures have also reduced drainage effectiveness, leaving primary roads susceptible to water accumulation.
Delayed pre-monsoon drain maintenance could result in extensive flooding of residential and commercial properties, causing significant damage. Major traffic disruptions would affect daily activities, while overflowing sewers in lower areas could cause widespread sanitation concerns. Although Rs 30.38 crore from AMRUT 2.0 has been allocated for long-term sewer infrastructure , immediate action is vital.

NDMC to launch intense tree planting drive during monsoon
New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is set to start its intensive tree planting drive in early July, coinciding with the monsoon. The initiative aims to plant 2,039 trees and roughly 4.82 lakh shrubs during the financial year throughout NDMC's jurisdiction. Officials said the 2025 targets were established following a comprehensive assessment that identified locations where trees were uprooted or damaged along avenue roads as well as areas requiring additional green cover. "While the planting will be carried out during the peak monsoon, it will continue later as well," an official said. "In July only, we aim to plant 914 saplings of indigenous trees and 9,28781 shrubs. While planting saplings at the sites of uprooted trees, we first make beds at the kuccha portion on the backside and plant multiple saplings on this stretch. Considering other trees on such patches are also old, we make sure that the new plantation is prepared by the time other trees are damaged or uprooted, and a huge space is not created," the official added. Some of the patches where planting is planned for July are Tolstoy Marg, Radial Road 1-7 and the outer circle of Connaught Place, Mandir Marg, Bhair Veer Singh Marg, Talkatora Garden, Firozshah Road, Jantar Mantar Road, Copernicus Marg, Akbar Road, Motilal Nehru Marg, Nehru Park, Malcha Marg, Commonwealth Game Park, Sanjay Jheel Park, Lodhi Road (Jor Bagh Site), Malcha Marg Colony parks and surrounding areas, Brigadier Hosiyan Singh Marg and Moti Bagh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo The horticulture department also makes a simultaneous effort to prune trees, treat damaged portions of diseased trees, and balance the canopy so that the chances of the tree falling during heavy rain decrease. "We have one tree ambulance in place, but to accelerate the work in the peak season, we have made temporary arrangements for three more trucks.... During the ongoing one week-one road drive, wherein concentrated effort is being made to develop all infra facilities on one road, we do pruning, etc. , as well," an official said. To commemorate World Environment Day and foster environmental awareness, NDMC chairman Keshav Chandra planted a sapling of Lagerstroemia (Pride of India) at Nehru Park, Chanakyapuri, on Thursday. He also said that the theme for World Environment Day is Beat Plastic Pollution, and a three-day Recycle Mela at three sites — Connaught Place, Khan Market and Malcha Market was organised this week.

Hundreds of thousands in US asked to limit outdoor activities in multiple places, emergency declared in 2 states
Smokes from wildfires in Canada is spreading across multiple states in the United States including the eastern seaboard, prompting multiple states to issue air-quality alerts. The poor air quality stretching across the US came as a result of dozens of wildfires burning across Canada as the country's annual wildfire season roars into destructive fires, which have been sparked by both humans and natural causes, have prompted at least 25,000 residents in three Canadian provinces to evacuate in recent days. Canadian wildfires have prompted authorities to issue air-quality alerts across large swathes across the United States as the smoke is expected to impact multiple states. Health officials have issued a dire warning that deteriorating air quality poses health risk to the public, particularly for sensitive groups such as children, older adults, and those with preexisting conditions, NewsWeek reports. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Two people have lost their lives and tens of thousands have been evacuated as a result of the blazes in Canada, reports suggest. The National Weather Service (NWS) has published alerts for parts of Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Arizona. Smoke from the wildfires is expected to raise levels of fine particulate matter in the air, prompting multiple air-quality alerts. Many of the air-quality alerts were in effect through Thursday, though some extended into Friday. According to CBS News, more than 33,000 people have been evacuated across three Canadian provinces due to the fires. Some 15,000 people had been evacuated in Saskatchewan as of Tuesday, with 1,400 ordered to evacuate in Alberta, the report said. The National Weather Service said on X, Friday: "Poor air quality can be hazardous to anyone. Before spending time outdoors, check the air quality forecast to ensure that you aren't doing yourself more harm than good." State of emergencies had already been declared in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, with Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew describing efforts in his province as "the largest wildfire evacuation in recent memory." "Their trajectory can be deviated so they don't actually achieve their maximum lung function." There are also "very clear links" between inhaling particles and earlier death from both respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, Grigg said. Grigg added that conditions such as asthma are also exacerbated by exposure to air pollution.

Thenpennai bridge washed away in December 2024 floods not designed per norms: Arappor Iyakkam
CHENNAI: The Rs 15.9-crore bridge built across Thenpennai river, connecting Agarampallipattu and Thondamanur villages in Tiruvannamalai district, which was inaugurated last September and washed away in the unprecedented floods in December during Cyclone Fengal, was not constructed as per the design standards recommended by the Indian Road Congress for high-level bridges. Soon after the bridge's collapse, the highways department had said that the bridge was designed to withstand flood levels up to 54,000 cusecs and on the day of the collapse (December 3), the water flow in the river was triple the level at 1.68 lakh cusecs. However, documents released on Wednesday by NGO Arappor Iyakkam showed that the maximum water discharge recorded in the last 100 years was not taken into consideration, as recommended by the IRC. It said that this is despite the Public Works Department communicating to the state highways before the finalisation of the contract for the bridge that a maximum discharge of 2.8 lakh cusecs was recorded in the river near the proposed site in 1972, which is 40 % lesser than the discharge witnessed during the floods in December.
