Richmond pug seized from owner after social media firestorm
(KRON) — A pug in Richmond was recently seized from its owner, Contra Costa Animal Services officials said, after it received an outpouring of concern from pug enthusiasts on social media.
CCAS provided on update on the pug, named Tyson, over the weekend. 'As part of our ongoing investigation, CCAS has taken Tyson — the pug in question — into custody after a pre-seizure hearing. This is still an active investigation, and we cannot share further details at this time,' Contra Costa Animal Services wrote.
A video of Tyson went viral last week when it appeared on a Facebook page, 'THE PUG QUEEN.' The video shows a man striking the small fawn-colored pug with a closed fist in a yard. The dog is connected to a leash. Thousands of comments voicing outrage and concerns on the page followed.
Emergency 911 dispatchers were overwhelmed by the volume of calls it received as people demanded that the Richmond Police Department do something to protect the pug from its owner.
RPD said officers went to the Richmond home, questioned the owner, and left the pug at home. Police said the owner's actions did not warrant a criminal investigation.
'We understand that many might find the video upsetting,' the police department wrote. 'Our dispatch center has received a heavy influx of calls regarding this incident. We ask that you refrain from calling to report this incident, as we are already aware of it, and the numerous calls we are receiving could potentially delay our dispatcher's ability to provide emergency medical assistance.'
'THE PUG QUEEN' wrote on Facebook, 'If this abuse case was handled properly by the authorities none of this drama would have happened.'
After police handed off the investigation to Contra Costa Animal Services, a pre-seizure hearing was held on Friday afternoon. CCAS said it took custody of Tyson at the end of the hearing.

MPD: False carjacking report leads to two arrests
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A driver who claimed he was carjacked early Saturday morning was charged with making a false report after police determined he made up the story. Edwin Blandon Moren, 45, allegedly told officers that two men in a white sedan pulled him out of his Ford F-150 at Macon and Highland and drove off in the vehicle. He said they also took his cell phone, cash, and credit cards. Where did 100,000 registered vehicles go in Shelby County? The Ford pickup was spotted a couple of hours later in a parking lot on Summer Avenue, and police arrested a woman who jumped out of the vehicle and tried to run away. Investigators said Moreno later admitted he had picked up a woman on Summer and went to a motel with her. He said that while he was in the shower, she took his wallet and drove off in his truck. Adrienne Campbell, 26, was charged with theft of property and evading arrest and is being held on a $25,000 bond. Court records show Campbell was arrested twice in 2024 for similar crimes. MPD: Home burglarized while suspects were live on Facebook In one case, she was accused of stealing a car from a female friend, and in another case, from a man who had given her a ride.
