Vancouver Whitecaps sign veteran goalkeeper Adrían Zendejas to contract
VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps have free agent goalkeeper Adrían Zendejas to a contract, the Major League Soccer club announced Friday.
The contract runs through 2025 with a club option for 2026 pending receipt of his international transfer certificate.
The 29-year-old from Chula Vista, Calif., spent last season with Swedish side Skovde AIK, starting 27 matches and keeping seven clean sheets.
He has made 136 career professional appearances in the United States and Sweden with 43 shutouts.
He has previous MLS experience with Minnesota United, Nashville SC, and Sporting Kansas City. He was on the bench for Kansas City's 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls in the 2017 U.S. Open Cup final.
Zendejas joins a goaltending crew in Vancouver that includes Japanese starting goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka and homegrown 'keepers Isaac Boehmer of Penticton, B.C., and Max Anchor of Surrey, B.C.
'Adrían has a wealth of experiences from across the league, has the right mentality, and brings additional competition to our goalkeeper group,' Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said in a release. "He immediately fit in with the entire team and we are pleased to officially welcome him to our club and city.'
The Whitecaps play the first leg of their first-round CONCACAF Champions Cup tie with Deportivo Saprissa next Thursday in Costa Rica, with the return leg on Feb. 27 in Vancouver. They kick off their MLS season Feb. 23 at Portland.

Kashima Antlers bring Sint Truiden defender back to the J League
Sint Truiden have announced that left-back Ryoya Ogawa has left the club to join Kashima Antlers in the J League. The 28-year-old spent a few seasons in Europe but has now returned to Japan where he started his career. Neither side has discolosed whether or not there wsa a transfer fee and how many years the defender has signed with Kashima Antlers. Ogawa, who has been capped five times by the Japanese national team, began his career with FC Tokyo. After 173 appearances and six goals for the side, he spent a season on loan in Portugal with Vitoria de Guimaraes. Ogawa only made 11 appearances for the Portuguese outfit, but remained in Europe at the end of the 2022/2023 season by joining up with Sint Truiden. Initially on loan, Ogawa was brought in permanently last summer as a replacement for Eric Bocat, who had left to join Stoke City. Despite the sides struggles in the league, Ogawa had a good season. The left-sided player played 38 games in total for the club, scoring twice and providing four assists. Saskatchewan Roughriders sign all-star running back Ka'Deem Carey
REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed all-star running back Ka'Deem Carey, the CFL club announced Monday. Carey was a CFL East all-star with Toronto last season after rushing for a team-high 1,060 yards with seven touchdowns. He had 79 yards and a TD in the Argonauts' 41-24 Grey Cup victory over Winnipeg. Advertisement However, he was among Toronto's final round of cuts before the start of the season. Before joining Toronto, Carey spent four seasons with the Calgary Stampeders. Montreal officials say they've left no stone unturned to prepare for Grand Prix
MONTREAL — City officials and organizers of this weekend's Grand Prix in Montreal say they're ready for the more than 350,000 people expected at the Formula One race. They say they've learned lessons from last year's event, which was marked by heavy congestion and poor communication. Provincial and municipal officials said they were both taking steps to scale back or pause construction work or lane closures on some busy highways and streets around the city.
