Thomas Mattice (22-4-1 with 17 KOs), who fights out of Cleveland, Ohio, is coming off a loss in his last bout after an accidental headbutt left him unable to continue his September 2024 contest against Eduardo Hernandez. Mattice is unranked by the major sanctioning bodies and ESPN.
I'm excited to fight in Atlantic City, it's pretty much a home fight for me so I'm going to do what I do best and put on a show,' said Ford. 'I know a lot of guys turned me down and it's been hard to get someone to take the fight. Credit to Mattice for stepping up but there's nobody at 130 pounds getting in my way. I'm coming for all the champions, and they can't keep running forever.'
'I'm super excited about the opportunity,' the 34-year-old Mattice said. 'I know buddy, but not personally but anyone that knows me, knows I'll scrap with whoever whenever, it's really easy with me. I'm looking forward to an action-packed fight with my hands being raised at the end #andthenew.'
Ford is a -1300 betting favorite over Mattice, who is a +710 underdog according to FanDuel.
Arturo Popoca (15-0-1 with 8 KOs) has had three decision wins in his past three fights, moving from a unanimous win over Ernesto Garcia in February 2024 to a majority decision over Danny Barrios in June to a split decision over Jesus Arechiga in his most recent outing in August. The 24-year-old from Sahuayo de Morelos, Michoacan, Mexico, last picked up a knockout in December 2023. Popoca holds the WBC Continental Americas super bantamweight crown. He has defended the title twice.
Christian Carto (23-1 with 16 KOs) is riding a six-fight winning streak heading into Saturday's fight card. Carto, who fights out of Philadelphia, has knockout wins in his past three outings, most recently stopping Carlos Buitrago at the end of the third round in their July 2024 matchup.
A big thank you to my team at RGBA and Matchroom for putting me on a such a great card,' said Popoca. 'I'm really excited to show the fans in Atlantic City what I can do in the ring. It's going to be a great night of boxing and I plan on stealing the show'
"I'm looking forward to fighting in Atlantic City and proving my talent on DAZN,' said the 28-year-old Carto. 'I'm thankful to be fighting for a title and I'm ready for the opportunity!'

The 27-year-old Ennis (33-0-0-1 with 29 knockouts) won the vacant IBF interim welterweight crown in January 2023 with a unanimous decision victory over Karen Chukhadzhian. He retained that title in July 2023 with a 10th-round knockout win over Roiman Villa. Ennis was elevated to full champion status in November 2023 when the sanctioning body stripped Terence Crawford of the belt not long after Crawford unified the welterweight titles with a win over Errol Spence Jr.
In his first defense of the IBF crown, Ennis defeated David Avanesyan when the fight was halted before the start of the sixth round. In his most recent outing, Ennis defeated Chukhadzhian by decision in a rematch in November 2024.

Stanionis was forced out of the first scheduled fight with Ortiz in early 2023 because of an emergency appendectomy. Ortiz withdrew from the rescheduled contest in March of that year because of rhabdomyolysis, a serious muscle condition. Then, in July, the fight was again scratched at the last minute because of dehydration.
Stanionis defended his title in May 2024 with a unanimous decision win over Gabriel Maestre.
ESPN has the two 147-pound competitors ranked at the top of the welterweight division, with Ennis at No. 1 and Stanionis at No. 2.

‘You couldn't pay us enough': Stephen A. Smith relays Rockets' response to Ime Udoka rumor
The New York Knicks reportedly have interest in hiring Rockets head coach Ime Udoka, but Udoka remains under contract with Houston for multiple future seasons. Coming off a season with the NBA's fourth-best record and a young and improving roster, the Rockets like the course they're on. Moreover, Udoka finished third in 2024-25 NBA Coach of the Year voting. So, there's not much incentive for Houston — even if offered lucrative compensation — to consider letting Udoka out of his contract to speak with the Knicks. Advertisement Per ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith, who happens to be a longtime Knicks fan, that's the message he's seemingly heard from Houston. On Tuesday's First Take, Smith said: Ime Udoka is one of the best coaches in the NBA. This brother is something better. When Jay Williams brought up about the New York Knicks reaching out to Houston, I got a text. 'You don't have enough,' they said. 'You couldn't pay us enough.' Ime Udoka ain't going anywhere, I got that text message, he's not going anywhere. And damn right, they should hold onto him for dear life. Smith's complete comments on Udoka and the Rockets can be viewed below. In recent days, the Knicks have seemingly shifted their focus to Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, who does appear to have some level of interest in the New York vacancy. It is possible that New York's interest could be leveraged by Udoka and his representation in upcoming negotiations with the Rockets, who are likely planning to give him a contract extension by the 2026 offseason at the latest (his current deal will end after the 2026-27 season). Stay tuned! Yankees hopeful Stanton rejoins team soon after impressive rehab showing
Yankees hopeful Stanton rejoins team soon after impressive rehab showing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Giancarlo Stanton did not look rusty Tuesday night in his first in-game at-bats since October. In his latest rehab game with Double-A Somerset, Stanton went 2-for-3, driving in three runs over seven innings, showing off the power and clutch hitting that New York desperately hopes to see back in their lineup soon. Advertisement Stanton, sidelined all season with recurring bilateral elbow epicondylitis, has been progressing steadily after being moved from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list earlier this season. This strong rehab outing provides optimism that his troublesome elbows are responding positively and could allow for a return to the Yankees lineup in the near future. New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton rehabs at Yankee Stadium. © Brad Penner-Imagn Images That future could be as soon as this weekend. Since joining the Yankees in a blockbuster deal in December 2017, Stanton's tenure has been defined by potent power and persistent injuries. Though he exploded onto the scene in 2018 with 38 home runs and 100 RBIs, subsequent seasons have seen him plagued by various muscular and elbow issues. His durability concerns have limited him to just over half the possible games since 2019, creating frustration around his intermittent availability. Advertisement Yet, when healthy, Stanton remains a decisive factor. He earned MVP honors in the 2022 All-Star Game and again in the 2024 ALCS, propelling the Yankees to their first World Series appearance in 15 years. His combination of power and clutch performance under pressure underscores why his return is so eagerly anticipated. With his recent performance at Somerset, the Yankees have to be encouraged. He is scheduled to DH again on Wednesday night for Somerset. Before the Yankees' Tuesday night game against the Royals, manager Aaron Boone said that they had not ruled out Stanton rejoining the Yankees' lineup this weekend in Fenway against the Boston Red Sox. Brazil, Ecuador book World Cup berths, Uruguay on brink
Brazil booked their place at the 2026 World Cup in North America on Tuesday with a lackluster 1-0 home victory over Paraguay, the first win of Carlo Ancelotti's reign. The five-time world champions punched their ticket to the finals in Canada, the United States and Mexico thanks to Vinicius Jr. The Real Madrid star poked in from close range in the 44th minute in Sao Paulo after a cross from new Manchester United signing Matheus Cunha. It was the perfect gift for the Italian Ancelotti on his 66th birthday, having seen his new side held 0-0 by Ecuador last week in his first game as coach. Former Real Madrid boss Ancelotti praised his team's "commitment" and "attitude". "It was a good match with a very good first half, although obviously we suffered a bit because Paraguay are very solid opponents and we slowed down a bit in the second," he said. Uruguay's 2-0 win over Venezuela in Montevideo had raised the prospect of qualification for both Brazil and Paraguay at Corinthians Arena. Paraguay needed only a point to qualify while Brazil knew they could advance with a win. In the event it was Brazil who seized the opportunity presented by Venezuela's loss with Vinicius scoring the only goal just before half-time. Brazil had struggled to create many chances up until that point, with Cunha squandering a golden chance in the 35th minute after heading wide from point-blank range. Cunha made up for it with a key part in the goal, capitalizing on good work from Raphinha to dart into the box and whip in a low cross for Vinicius, who stabbed home the finish. The win lifted Brazil into third place in the South American standings with 25 points from 16 games, guaranteeing them a top-six finish and an automatic qualifying berth. Looking ahead to next summer, Ancelotti said he had "a very long list" of 70 players in mind, including Neymar, who was missing with injury. He added: "I really liked those who were with me in this squad for their commitment, their attitude, and the atmosphere." The defeat left Paraguay with 24 points, meaning they need one point to secure their first World Cup appearance since 2010. - Ecuador book place - Surprise package Ecuador joined Brazil by sealing qualification with a point following a 0-0 draw with Peru in Lima. In other games, Uruguay edged closer to qualification with their win over Venezuela while Chile were eliminated with defeat to Bolivia. Goals from Rodrigo Aguirre and Giorgian de Arrascaeta secured all three points for Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay to leave the two-time world champions firmly on course for a place in next year's finals. Like Paraguay, Uruguay need only a point from their final two games to qualify. Venezuela, who are bidding to reach the World Cup for the first time in the nation's history, are seventh with 18 points from 16 games. Argentina, who have already qualified, came from behind to frustrate Colombia with a 1-1 draw in Buenos Aires. Liverpool star Luis Diaz fired Colombia into the lead with a superb 24th minute goal, and the Colombians were given a further boost midway through the second half when the world champions were reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernandez's dismissal. But Colombia's hopes of a vital win were dashed nine minutes from time when Thiago Almada weaved into the box and found the target to level. The top six finishers in South America qualify automatically for the World Cup, with the seventh-placed team advancing to an intercontinental playoff. Bolivia defeated Chile 2-0 to end the former South American champions' hopes of qualification. It is the third straight World Cup that Chile have missed out on. The loss continues a dramatic fall from grace for "La Roja", who won back-to-back Copa Americas in 2015 and 2016. bur-rcw-pst/mtp
