As tensions rise between India and Pakistan following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, the government has ramped up efforts to identify and deport Pakistani nationals from the country as part of a flurry of diplomatic restrictions.
Among those caught in the sweeping crackdown was Ahmed Tariq Butt, a Bengaluru-based professional working with Accenture. Along with five family members, Butt was reportedly ordered to go to Pakistan despite being Indian citizens with valid passports and Aadhaar cards.

Things took a sharp turn on Friday when the Supreme Court stepped in, asking for verification of his documents and demanded that 'no coercive action' be taken against Butt, who has an MBA from the Kerela's IIM Kozhikode, till then.
But how did Butt and his family get a deportation notice in the first place? And what did the top court say on the matter? Here's a closer look
'How did you come to India?'
During the hearing on Friday morning, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N K Singh asked Butt about his background and how he came to India.
Ahmed Tariq Butt told the court that he and his family, his parents, elder sister, and two younger brothers, were residents of Mirpur in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir until 1997.
His father moved to Srinagar that year and surrendered his Pakistan passport to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, after which he applied for and secured an Indian passport.
The rest of the family joined him in 2000. Butt said he and his siblings studied at a private school in the city. He also told the court that he holds an Indian passport and an Aadhaar card.
His counsel added that only one family member had Pakistani roots, as he was born there. But he had surrendered his Pakistani passport long ago, the advocate said.

Despite these documents, Butt claimed that a Home Ministry order served last week directed his entire family to leave the country. The notice, he alleged, falsely stated that they had entered India on visas and overstayed.
Seeking urgent intervention, Butt informed the court that his 'father, mother, sister and a younger brother were arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police on April 29 at around 9 pm illegally' and 'were taken to the India-Pakistan border on April 30 at around 12.20 pm,' as reported by The Indian Express.
He further stated that they 'are at present being forced to leave India from the border' and that 'deportation is imminent even though they are Indian nationals'.
This cannot be a precedent for future cases: SC
After issuing a stay on Ahmed Tariq Butt's deportation, the Supreme Court made it clear that the order should not be treated as a precedent in similar matters.
The bench emphasised that the decision was made based on the 'peculiar facts and circumstances' of the case. This clarification holds significance at a time when several individuals, many with Muslim names, have reportedly been asked to leave the country following visa cancellations.

In Butt's case, the court also directed him to approach the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh if he was not satisfied with the final outcome.
Attari-Wagah border shut
In the wake of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives in Kashmir, India issued a series of countermeasures, including ordering a shutdown of its border with Pakistan and issuing 'Leave India' notices to all Pakistani nationals residing in the country.
As part of the sweeping crackdown, all visas for Pakistani citizens, except for long-term stay permits and those granted to Pakistani Hindus, were cancelled, and they were directed to leave India by April 30.
Following this directive, 125 Pakistani nationals exited India through the Attari-Wagah border on Wednesday, bringing the seven-day total of departures to 911. In addition, 15 Indian citizens holding Pakistani visas also crossed over, taking the overall count of such departures to 23.

On the entry side, 152 Indian nationals and 73 Pakistanis with valid long-term Indian visas arrived in the country through the Amritsar border. These arrivals pushed the totals to 1,617 Indian returnees and 224 Pakistani entrants since the announcement.
However, the deportation process hit a roadblock when Pakistan allegedly closed the Wagah border post, causing distress among deported Pakistani citizens who were left stranded in the scorching heat while trying to return home.

It appeared that Pakistani authorities did not open the gate to receive their citizens. But Pakistan's Foreign Office dismissed this, stating that its borders are open to receiving its citizens.
In addition to cancelling visas, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, closed its airspace to Pakistani flights, and banned the social media accounts of Pakistani nationals.

How is India benefiting from supply chain diversification away from China? Morgan Stanley's Chetan Ahya explains
Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads , Chief Asia Economist, says India is gaining advantage due to tariff differences with China. American companies are considering increased imports from India. Government policies are boosting manufacturing and exports. Electronics manufacturing is expanding beyond mobile phones. Infrastructure development will further strengthen India's manufacturing exports. Optimism in Indian equity markets aligns with positive economic fundamentals. The organization maintains a bullish outlook on think that the government capex has been the key anchor of the capex cycle and to the extent to which India has been embarking on this focus on manufacturing capex, the government's focus on infrastructure would be an important anchor to that private capex eventually improving as now, it is still the government capex and we had seen a bump down or a small slowdown period for government capex post general elections last year. But we have seen that in the last three-four months, there has been a meaningful pick up in government capex. In March, we saw that both central and state government capex growing at a very high pace and that has now taken the 12-month trailing centre plus state combined capital expenditure to close to the peaks that we had seen right before the general have seen this strength in government capex coming back again. As far as private capex is concerned, we were expecting that would have picked up a lot more by this time, but to the extent to which we have seen this trade tensions emerge from early this year that is going to affect the capex outlook not only in the region, but also in India, despite the fact that India has lower exposure to global goods reality is that it still has a meaningful exposure of 12% of GDP being its goods exports to GDP. We are expecting private capex to be going through a bit of an adjustment period in the environment of global trade tensions and then, over the next calendar year, that is, in 2026, we should see a pick up in private capex because by that time, the damage out of this global trade tensions would have been behind is benefiting on account of it. Right now, during a period where tariffs on China, even after having come down, are still at a very high run rate of 30% and from the 2018 period, you also have about 11% weighted average tariff on imports from China that the US has imposed. Cumulatively, we still have a 41% tariff rate for import from China for the US and that does give some sectors an advantage over China in terms of pricing and even sort of thinking about a bit more from a medium-term corporate sector in America is beginning to think about importing more from India. India is probably benefiting on account of that. Then, from a medium-term perspective, we have always argued that look, it is not just about taking away market share from China, but just getting rightful market share for India in the global goods exports and for that India's policies that were important and the government has been taking the right policies to boost that manufacturing sector have seen electronics manufacturing getting a leg up. We are going to see that expand into more and more products within the electronic segment apart from mobile phones and laptops. And at the same time, we think that from a medium-term perspective, this whole push towards infrastructure will really strengthen India's manufacturing exports. It is really a lot of the domestic policies that will be important from the long term apart from the short-term benefit that it may get on account of differential tariff rates between India and our regional and India strategists have been very constructive on India. So, we are aligned up as a house on being bullish on India.

Former RCB owner Mallya recalls picking Kohli, says IPL title is dream-come-true moment for him
New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI) Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru owner Vijay Mallya recalled picking a young Virat Kohli 18 seasons ago in the players auction and said it was remarkable to witness the maestro staying loyal to the franchise, which has finally won a long-awaited IPL trophy. RCB defeated Punjab Kings by six runs in the IPL final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday to end their long wait in the 18th edition of the tournament. "When I founded RCB it was my dream that the IPL trophy should come to Bengaluru. I had the privilege of picking the legendary King Kohli as a youngster and it is remarkable that he has stayed with RCB for 18 years," Mallya wrote in a post on 'X'. RCB, which was bought by Mallya for USD 111.6 million back in 2008, picked Kohli in the inaugural IPL auction in January 2008, and the batting superstar has only played for the Bengaluru-based franchise since then. The UK-based Mallya lost ownership of the franchise in 2016 after defaulting on bank loans. The team is now completely owned by United Spirits. Mallya is, however, credited with playing major a role in signing the cricketing giants like AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Jacques Kallis, and Anil Kumble among others for RCB. "I also had the honour of picking Chris Gayle the Universe Boss and Mr 360 AB DeVillers who remain an indelible part of RCB history. Finally, the IPL trophy arrives in Bengaluru. "Congratulations and thanks again to all who made my dream come true. RCB fans are the very best and they deserve the IPL trophy. Ee Sala Cup Bengaluru baruthe ! (This year, the cup is ours)," Mallya wrote. The liquor baron, who is accused of defaulting on loans worth several crores from Indian banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI), congratulated the entire RCB team management for the triumph. "RCB are IPL Champions finally after 18 years. Superb campaign right through the 2025 tournament. A well balanced team Playing Bold with outstanding coaching and support staff. Many congratulations ! Ee sala cup namde !!"
