UFC 318: Patricio Freire gets sophomore assignment vs. Dan Ige in New Orleans

UFC 318: Patricio Freire gets sophomore assignment vs. Dan Ige in New Orleans Ask and you shall receive. It looks like the UFC heard Dan Ige's recent callout and obliged, booking him against former two-division Bellator champion Patricio Freire for UFC 318 – a pay-per-view event that's set to go down July 19 at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. MMA Junkie confirmed the news with two sources following a report from Super Lutas on Tuesday. Both Ige (19-9 MMA, 11-8 UFC) and Freire (36-8 MMA, 0-1 UFC) fought at UFC 314 in April in different bouts. Ige stopped fellow veteran Sean Woodson, while Freire lost his UFC debut in a unanimous decision against Yair Rodriguez. With the victory, Ige was able to snap a two-fight losing skid that had him dropping decisions against top contenders Diego Lopes and Lerone Murphy. On the other hand, Freire, who's arguably the most successful fighter in Bellator history, fell into a 1-3 rut. Prior to debuting for the UFC, "Pitbull" stopped Jeremy Kennedy and lost to Chihiro Suzuki and Sergio Pettis. Current UFC 318 lineup

Mike Perry itching to make BKFC return, likely done fighting MMA

Mike Perry itching to make BKFC return, likely done fighting MMA Mike Perry teases a big fight for his BKFC return Show Caption Hide Caption Mike Perry teases big fight for 2025 BKFC return, likely done with MMA Mike Perry speaks to MMA Junkie's Danny Segura about his fighting career and a potential 2025 return to BKFC, and much more. Combat sports has missed out on some Mike Perry action this calendar year, but it looks like that may soon change. Perry, BKFC's King of Violence champion, is ramping up training and looking to get back in the ring soon. The last time he was seen fighting was when he faced popular influencer Jake Paul in a boxing match back in July 2024. Since then, Perry's fighting career has been put on the back burner, as he's been focused on podcasting and getting his striking promotion, Dirty Boxing Championship, up and running. Although Perry is happy with his new ventures, he's starting to get the itch to fight again. "I want to, I want to. I have the urge." Perry told MMA Junkie. I'm hungry for it. I do train, and I was just talking to someone saying I want to turn up the heat in my training over the next eight weeks. I've had some calls and conversations, talked with a lot of powerful, important people, and it's always the same story: Get me back in the ring, I want to get back in front of the people and show the eyes these punches. It's all part of the big plate I got. It's taken a big portion, me trying to get back in that ring and do what needs to be done for me to do that. It's bound to happen." Perry told MMA Junkie that he's still signed with BKFC and has three fights left with the promotion – despite co-owner Conor McGregor saying that he was fired following his loss to Paul. "Platinum" says there's already early talks for a big return fight with a few different options. He hopes to not only fight in 2025, but do it more than once. "I might have a big name in the hook," Perry said. "I've been having this name, it's just they might need more preparation, and it takes two sides to get it done. There's also another side I was just getting word on. If things are getting taken care of correctly, and I'm talent care of properly, then it might just be a little while longer before I get my chance to get back in the ring. The question shouldn't be: Will Platinum Mike Perry fight this year? It should be: Will he fight two times by the end of the year? So we'll see. ... I'm literally fighting, scratching and clawing to force someone to give me something real. I think we're real close to that." Although Perry's star power has taken off through his bareknuckle boxing career, he originally made his name fighting in the UFC, where he had many memorable finishes and wars. As far as MMA goes, Perry thinks that chapter is over with, unless a specific fight arises. "The weight class at 185, I think that's a tough weight class for me in MMA," Perry explained. "If a big guy is on top of me I'm going to have to go and train with 225-pound Lyoto Machida and get some jiu-jitsu going, and I don't do MMA anymore. I punch these guys. If I train with these MMA guys, they'll do boxing with me because it's a big part of their sport, a lot of guys like to throw punches into the wrestling game or clinch game or those things. "All the sports I might have an option in are really boxing. Except for Dillon Danis, he's the only one that's been trying to fight me in MMA. He tries to break people toes or something. If they allow face stomps, they have to allow face stomps, then I'll fight Dillon Danis in MMA."

In that matchup, Amir Albazi and Tatsuro Taira look to bounce back from the first losses of their UFC careers. In addition to Albazi vs. Taira, the UFC has announced six other fights for the upcoming UFC Fight Night event. UFC Vegas 108 marks the first UFC fight card at the Apex since UFC Vegas 107 on May 31. More flyweight bout against Kai Kara-France of New Zealand during the UFC Fight Night event at UFC APEX on June 03, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Amir Albazi (17-2) enters UFC Vegas 108 as the No. 3 fighter in the UFC's flyweight division. Albazi made his UFC debut as a short-notice replacement in a bantamweight scrap against Malcolm Gordon in July 2020. Albazi won that matchup via submission. He then dropped to flyweight for his next outing, a January 2021 decision win over Zhalgas Zhumagulov. Wins over Francisco Figueiredo, Alessandro Costa, and Kai Kara-France followed, which earned him a February booking opposite former UFC flyweight champ Brandon Moreno. Albazi was forced from that card due to a neck injury. At the time, Albazi wrote on Twitter, 'I'm out of the fight against Moreno 24th of February. I have been dealing with a serious neck injury the past weeks. After some scans the UFC doctors decided to pull me out of the fight immediately. I want to apologize to the fans and the UFC. I will be back inshallah.' A healthy Albazi finally got his shot at Moreno in November 2024 in a main event matchup in Edmonton. Moreno won that contest via unanimous decision, handing Albazi his first loss since April 2019 when he was with Brave CF. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - OCTOBER 12: Tatsuro Taira of Japan prepares to face Brandon Royval in a ... More flyweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at UFC APEX on October 12, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) Taira (16-1) has risen up the UFC flyweight ranks fairly quickly. He joined the UFC in May 2022 with a record of 10-0, and after winning the Shooto flyweight title. Taira opened his UFC career with a unanimous decision win over Carlos Candelario in May 2022. He followed that with back-to-back submission wins in contests where he earned 'Performance of the Night' bonuses, defeating C.J. Vergara and Jesús Santos Aguilar. Wins over Edgar Chairez and Carlos Hernandez in 2023 followed. In June, Taira got the first true test of his UFC career when he faced Alex Perez in a main event on a UFC Fight Night card at the Apex. At the time, Taira was the No. 13 ranked fighter in the UFC's flyweight division, and Perez, who had fought Deiveson Figueiredo for the UFC 125-pound title in 2020, was ranked No. 5. Taira won that bout via TKO due to a knee injury. The fight ended when Taira took the back of his opponent in the center of the Octagon and forced him to the mat, putting enormous pressure on Perez's knee and causing an injury that brought the fight to a halt in the second stanza. From all appearances, and judging from his comments after the victory, the move that finished the contest was a designed technique. In October, the 25-year-old Taira faced former UFC flyweight title challenger Brandon Royval in the main event of a UFC Fight Night at the Apex in Las Vegas. The fight was a close one, but Royval earned the split decision win, handing Taira the first loss of his MMA career. Taira is the No. 5 ranked UFC flyweight. We will have more on the UFC Nashville fight card as information becomes available.
