
It could be 2026 before all your Thread border routers work together
There's finally some good news for anyone battling multiple Thread networks while using Matter devices in their smart home — as long as you're the patient type. According to Matter Alpha, the tvOS 26 beta announced at WWDC this week adds Thread 1.4 to Apple TVs. And, as Apple's smart speakers use a fork of tvOS, it's likely that the upcoming HomePod OS 26 will include 1.4 as well.
Thread 1.4 brings a standard way for Thread border routers, such as Apple TVs and HomePods, to join an existing Thread network, fixing the problem where border routers from different manufacturers set up separate networks when they join your smart home. 'We're seeing a great shift toward Thread 1.4 among some major device, platform, and border router vendors,' Thread Group VP of marketing Ann Olivo told The Verge.
But, with tvOS 26 not arriving until the fall, and Google and Amazon's adoption of Thread 1.4 coming next year at the earliest, those of us who like to mix and match our smart home hardware — maybe you have an Apple TV, an Eero router, and a Google Nest Hub — will have to wait until at least 2026 for a more stable and speedier smart home.
Released in September 2024, Thread 1.4 is the latest specification of the smart home protocol that Matter runs on. Thread offers a low-power, low-bandwidth mesh networking protocol designed specifically for IoT devices like lights, locks, sensors, and more. The 1.4 spec dictates that when a border router is added, it will join the existing Thread network versus creating a new one — regardless of brand or platform. So, for example, your new Echo Show 8 would join the network already created by your Apple TV.
Thread-powered devices require a Thread border router to connect to the internet. Today, there are several options for border routers, including the newest Apple TVs and HomePods, higher-end Echo and Google Nest smart speakers, and some Wi-Fi routers, including Eeros. If you have a few of these devices, they may set up separate Thread networks, which can cause issues. The biggest being that you lose the extended range and reliability benefits of a unified mesh network.
I currently have nine Thread networks running in my home. Samsung SmartThings has created three. My Nest network includes most of my HomePods and my Google TV streamer; my Apple network has a newer Apple TV and a Nanoleaf border router in it. I have three separate Eero networks, one with Eero devices in it and the other two with Echo devices in them. While my setup is not typical (I test smart home devices for a living), it does demonstrate what a mess this can create.
Older versions of Thread are being sunsetted to speed up the transition. 'Thread 1.3 certification applications for Thread Border Routers will close December 31, 2025,' Olivo confirmed. 'As of Jan. 1, 2026, Thread 1.4 will be the only specification available for Thread Border Router certification.'
With Apple poised to implement Thread 1.4 this fall with tvOS 26, I checked in with Google, Amazon, and Samsung to see where they were at. All are still on 1.3. However, Mark Benson, head of SmartThings US, said Samsung's border routers will be on 1.4 'later this year.' Amazon spokesperson Melanie Garvey said they will bring support for 1.4 'across compatible devices next year.' Alex Sakhartchouk, a software engineer at Google Home, confirmed that they are actively working toward adding support for Thread 1.4 'in the future.'
'As of Jan. 1, 2026, Thread 1.4 will be the only specification available for Thread Border Router certification.'
Sakhartchouk added that Google Nest Thread border routers already 'do our best' to join existing networks by integrating with mobile Thread credential storage APIs on Android and iOS. Meaning, when you set them up with your smartphone, they should share credentials with an existing border router using the phone. 'We share our credentials via these same mobile APIs to allow others to join our networks,' he said. This worked for me — when I set up the Google TV streamer, it joined my existing Apple Thread network.
While mobile credential sharing helps today, and the Wi-Fi router-based solution put in place by the Connectivity Standards Alliance in Matter 1.4 could help at some point, the most straightforward fix is border routers communicating with each other. This should have been the approach from day one — but it looks like we'll have to be patient a while longer.

Larry Ellison Gets $40 Billion Richer On Oracle Stock Jump—Now 2nd-Wealthiest
Larry Ellison reclaimed his spot among the world's two richest people and then some this week as shares of his cloud computing titan shot to an all-time high following earnings, marking the latest back-and-forth near the top of Forbes' rich list amid the artificial intelligence arms race. Oracle stock followed its 13% rally Thursday with a scorching 7% gain by midafternoon Friday, trading at a record of about $215 per share. Ellison's net worth accordingly rocketed by more than $40 billion to $258 billion from Wednesday to Friday, enjoying easily the largest daily bump of any billionaire on both Thursday and Friday when his fortune rose by about $25 billion and $16 billion, respectively, according to Forbes data. That gain was enough to vault Ellison past Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos ($228 billion net worth) and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg ($238 billion) for the second spot on Forbes' real-time billionaires ranking. Ellison is now only less wealthy than his longtime friend Elon Musk ($414 billion net worth). $104 billion. That's how much market capitalization Oracle has gained over the last two trading sessions. That's more than the total valuation of Intel or Nike. Oracle's surge follows a Wednesday afternoon earnings report revealed stronger profits ($1.70 adjusted earnings per share) and sales ($15.9 billion revenue) than Wall Street expected for the company's financial quarter ending last month. Deutsche Bank analyst Brad Zelnick described the earnings update as a 'watershed' moment for Oracle, adding in a note to clients: 'When Larry Ellison speaks of entering a new era of cloud computing, all should pay careful attention,' nodding to Oracle's position as one of the powering forces in the generative and agentic AI push. Oracle's 2026 fiscal year starting this month will be a 'major inflection point' for Oracle's core cloud infrastructure service 'driven by massive demand for AI training workloads,' predicted TD Cowen analyst Derrick Wood in a note. Oracle is an enterprise software colossus, making much of its hay selling cloud computing and data storage, notably hosting the U.S. data of the social media platform TikTok. Ellison owns about 41% of Oracle, the company he cofounded in 1977. The 80-year-old Ellison is no stranger from the public eye. He served on Tesla's board of directors from 2018 to 2022, spent at least $20 million to help elect GOP candidates during 2022 midterm elections, bought a Hawaiian island for $300 million and even contributed to a record sum paid to bring the nation's top quarterback recruit to the University of Michigan's football team, the alma mater of his 33-year-old wife Kere Zhu. Ellison also appeared alongside President Donald Trump in January to unveil Stargate, the joint venture between Oracle, SoftBank and OpenAI to supercharge the U.S.' AI push.

What WWDC tells us about the future of Apple and the iPhone

Apple's Liquid Glass design overhaul was criticized on social media because it makes some iPhone notifications hard to read. A few jokers on X even shared a screenshot of YouTube's play button obstructing the "Gl" in a thumbnail for an Apple Liquid Glass promo. Need I say more? The more serious question hanging over this year's WWDC was not answered. When will Siri get the AI upgrade it desperately needs? Software chief Craig Federighi delivered the bad news: It's still not ready. That knocked roughly $75 billion off Apple's market value. The stock recovered a bit, but it's still badly lagging behind rivals this month. Google, OpenAI, and other tech companies are launching powerful new AI models and products at a breakneck pace. Apple is running out of time to prove it's a real player in this important field. Analyst Dan Ives is usually bullish, but even he's concerned. "They have a tight window to figure this out," Ives wrote, after calling this year's WWDC a "yawner." AI is complex, expensive, and takes a long time to get right. Apple was late to start building the needed foundational technology, such as data centers, training data pipelines, and homegrown AI chips. By contrast, Google began laying its AI groundwork decades ago. It bought DeepMind in 2014, and this AI lab shapes Google's models in profound ways today. When I was at Google I/O last month, one or two insiders whispered a phrase. They cautiously described an "intelligence gap" that could open up between the iPhone and other smartphones. Many Android phones already feature Google's Gemini chatbot, which is far more capable than Siri. If Apple's AI upgrade takes too long, this intelligence gap could widen so much that some iPhone users might consider switching. At I/O, these insiders only whispered this idea. That's because it will take something pretty dramatic to get people to give up their iPhones. This device has become a utility that we can't live without — even for the few days (weeks?) it might take to get used to an Android replacement.
