‘We have to build trust with our agency': JSO forms new Health & Wellness Section
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says a newly formed Health & Wellness section will provide support to the overall physical, mental, and emotional health of members of JSO.
It includes things like peer support, counseling services, the critical incident stress management team, K9 and military spouse support, along with chaplain services.
The newly formed section will be headed by Commander Randi Glossman, who recently served as the commander of Patrol District 3.

'We have to build trust with our agency,' says Glossman.
'One of the things, unfortunately, within law enforcement is the stigma that it is not okay to say that I'm not okay, and we have to fix that,' says Glossman. 'We have to show our employees that it's okay to come forward and say, I need help, whether it's I'm having feelings of either suicide. Or I need help getting through, getting over a call I've been to, or I'm having problems at home with my spouse or my boyfriend or my girlfriend, I'm having problems with my children. I mean, we're human.'
Glossman spoke highly of previous beneficial trainings for JSO that deal with mental health topics like the POWER program .
'We wanna have a healthy agency because we are better serving our community when we're healthier. We see things better, we make better decisions,' says Glossman.
Recently, JSO has had two separate officer-involved shootings.

On Sunday, an officer shot and killed a man after a chaotic encounter between police stemming from a domestic disturbance on Normandy Blvd.
On Friday, an officer shot and killed a man who police say attacked two people with butcher knives on Jillian Drive near Ricker Road.
'We have tons of resources available, not only through our agency, with peer support, we have critical incidents stress management teams, we have a an officer-involved shooting team that goes out anytime those those incidents happen and they help our officers through these processes and in addition to that we have resources outside of our agency that do the same or similar things,' says Glossman.
Funding-wise, like any other JSO funding entity, the section will have to go through the city council, and the sheriff would have to ask for this to be included in JSO's budget.
'Next year, I am hopeful that we will have a robust budget that we ask city council for because we do want to initiate a lot of programs that will help our officers, because, like we just mentioned, when we're healthy, the city will be healthy,' says Glossman.
JSO says there will also be other forms of employee assistance designed to proactively help JSO employees and their family's wellbeing.

‘Prepared to respond:' Duval County law enforcement conducts active shooter training in Mayport
When law enforcement authorities said 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner opened fire on Florida State University's campus earlier this year, killing two and injuring several others, it served as a reminder just how close to home the threat of an active shooter is for schools across Florida and in Duval County. 'Those officers did a great job that day, but it's another reminder of how close to home these things happen and how quickly they can happen,' Duval County Public Schools Police Chief Jackson Short said Thursday morning. 'So it's important that we take them seriously and that we are prepared to respond.' Thursday morning, for the fourth straight year, multiple law enforcement agencies across Duval County conducted active shooter drills in our area schools, to make sure they're prepared in times of crisis. 'They [were] tasked with not only locating the suspects, but also addressing them appropriately,' Chief Short explained. 'In addition, we [also had] students simulating victims that need different levels of first aid, so using concepts such as the rescue task force, which is a partnership between law enforcement and fire rescue, to get those trained medical personnel into the crisis site.' [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, DCPS Police Department, as well as Jacksonville, Neptune, and Atlantic beach police came together at Mayport Middle and Mayport Elementary Thursday morning, to coordinate the training exercise among beaches schools for the very first time. 'Those three beaches police departments, they work together constantly, they support each other constantly,' Chief Short said. 'Their borders touch each other and it's not uncommon for them to back each other up and back up the sheriff's office that patrols out here in Mayport. So we felt like this location was the perfect opportunity to bring all those agencies together.' During the summer break, police are asking parents and students to familiarize themselves with the student training for active shooter scenarios. Child shoots father in Jacksonville daycare parking lot
A community is shocked after another accidental shooting involving a child. This time, workers at a daycare said a young girl shot her father in their parking lot. Action News Jax has seen several cases like this, and on Wednesday, gun safety experts are speaking out about keeping your kids safe. 'A child got hold of a gun and she fired a shot at her father,' said Allegra Gardner, Daycare Director. Gardner said she was shocked when she heard shots go off in their parking lot on Dunn Avenue Wednesday morning. She says the young girl hit her father. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< Police said the man was grazed but did not confirm anything else, including how the child got hold of the gun. Gardner said the family was only visiting and no children were hurt. 'The child did not attend the daycare at all. As a matter of fact, the daycare locked and secured,' said Gardner. Even though no one at the daycare was involved, parents were still scared. 'I got a message from my daycare saying it was on lockdown,' said Daycare Parent Tylique R. Spencer. Spencer said he was immediately concerned for his son's safety. 'First it was if my kid is safe. I mean, it's Jacksonville. A lot of stuff goes down here,' said Spencer. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Action News Jax has reported on several accidental shootings involving children. Earlier this year, a two-year-old boy in Jacksonville died after getting hold of a gun. 'You always have to be aware of where your fire arm is, especially if the kids are in the vicinity,' said Rod Mills, Founder of Scorched Earth Firearms Training. Mills said proper storage is crucial for everyone's safety. 'I always suggest you have a gun safe installed in your vehicle,' Mills. If you don't have one, many cars now have locks on their glove compartments or center consoles. Mills says you can properly store your firearm in those — as long as your children cannot get inside. It's not just a good idea — it's the law. Florida law says you can be charged with a crime if your child gets access to a gun that isn't properly stored. As we said, JSO did not give many details. We are working to find out if anyone will face charges because of this.
