Shastri's advice for India ahead of Birmingham Test showdown

Birmingham, July 1 (UNI) Former India coach Ravi Shastri has urged his former side to remain positive as they try and square the five-match Test series against England tomorrow. India fell to a five-wicket loss to England in the ICC World Test Championship series opener at Headingley despite dominating much of the contest and now need to regroup quickly ahead of the must-win encounter at Edgbaston that could well determine who claims the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Questions still remain whether pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will be risked by India for the second Test as his workload continues to be managed, while the team are also tossing up whether to include a second spinner in their line-up to help first-choice tweaker Ravindra Jadeja. But Shastri is not too concerned by team selection and instead wants his former side to concentrate on playing positive cricket with good intent during the crucial Edgbaston contest. "The most important thing for India is to throw the counter punch almost immediately," Shastri told The ICC Review. "When you lose a Test match like this where you have dominated most of it and then you lose it on the last day with a big chase and full marks to England for keeping their composure and doing that, it will need a lot of character to come to the fore and to bounce back in the series," he said. "Now, whether Bumrah plays or doesn't play, one doesn't know. But let's hope he does because this is a very important Test match and all is not lost," Shastri said. "It's just you take it one game at a time. It's a five-match series and India will be hoping to bounce back," he said. Shastri believes newly appointed skipper Shubman Gill will have learnt plenty from India's loss in the series opener and expects the young leader to be more proactive for the remainder of the series. "People say he was a little reactive and it can happen when you're playing your first Test match (as captain) and especially in such good batting conditions with a fast outfield and things can happen in that way," Shastri said. "But he would have learnt a lot from that and will want to be a little more proactive when it comes now, which means the bowlers and the fielders will have to give him that support," he said. "They have got to know what their role is and get out there and execute it," Shastri added. UNI BM

India look to rewrite history at Edgbaston after Leeds defeat

Birmingham, July 1 (UNI) India arrive at Edgbaston tomorrow for the second Test of the five-match series carrying a statistic as extraordinary as it is painful: they are the first team in first-class cricket history to score five centuries in a match and still walk away defeated. That historic misstep at Headingley — after being in command for most of the game, has left fans bewildered and has handed England a significant psychological edge. Despite blistering centuries from Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant (who scored tons in both innings), KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, India collapsed in the key moments. Their lower-order fell away just when it mattered, and a passive bowling display on the final day allowed England to chase down an imposing target with five wickets to spare, a result that flipped the tone of the series entirely. Now, the caravan rolls into Edgbaston Stadium, a venue steeped in tradition and deafening spectators' energy, but one where India have never tasted success. In eight previous Tests here, India have lost six and drawn two, a daunting record they will look to rewrite. A loss here would see England stretch their lead to 2-0 with three matches remaining, while an Indian win would square the series and breathe life into their campaign. England too have had their recent struggles at this venue, losing three of their last five Tests here. But this version of England — riding high under Ben Stokes and the unapologetically aggressive 'Bazball' strategy — feels different. They've now won four of their last five Tests, including the stirring comeback in Leeds, and look hungry to dominate again. Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum have kept faith in a winning combination, naming an unchanged XI. There's still no spot for Jofra Archer, though he remains with the squad. Local hero Chris Woakes will lead the seam attack alongside Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse. Tongue and Stokes were game-changers in Leeds, each bagging four wickets in India's first innings. India, in contrast, are expected to make at least one tactical change. With the Edgbaston pitch likely to dry out and take spin from Day Four onwards, Kuldeep Yadav is expected to replace Prasidh Krishna. Captain Gill will be counting on Jasprit Bumrah to rediscover his rhythm and menace, especially at a ground where England tend to flourish with the bat. In that opening Test, India's top order was in sublime touch: Gill scored 147, Pant struck twin centuries (134 and 118), KL Rahul made 137, and Jaiswal added 101 to the tally. Bumrah led the attack with five wickets. But England responded with similar steel — Ollie Pope anchored the innings with 106, Harry Brook added 99, and Ben Duckett fired with scores of 62 and 149. On the bowling front, Tongue and Stokes delivered under pressure. The Edgbaston pitch promises an intriguing battle. Dry and true early on, it's expected to offer moderate bounce before bringing spinners into the contest later. A first-innings total of 400-450 will be considered a benchmark, and with both sides enjoying massive fan support, the atmosphere is set to be electric. The pressure is now firmly on India to bounce back and make history at a venue where they've never won. For England, it's an opportunity to tighten their grip on the series and turn the screw further. All eyes are on Birmingham — a battleground where form, history, and momentum collide. Probable XIs: England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir. India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav. UNI BDN ARN 1033

Shuttler Ayush Shetty clinches US Open Super 300 title

**EDS: THIRD PARTY IMAGE** In this image via Badminton Photo, India's Ayush Shetty returns to Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien-chen during the men's singles semi-final match at the US Open 2025 badminton tournament, in Iowa, USA. (Badminton Photo/Yves Lacroix via PTI Photo)(PTI06_29_2025_000029A) Bengaluru: Indian shuttler Ayush Shetty was on cloud nine after securing the US Open Super 300 title in Iowa, USA, on Sunday. Almost 8,500km away in India, it was nearly 3 am on Monday when the Karnataka player, who had just won his maiden BWF title, dialled his father Ramprakash Shetty who was patiently waiting for the call from his son. The victory was a big one not only for the Shetty's, but a much-needed title for India whose top shuttlers have been in poor form this year. At a time when stars like PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy have struggled, Ayush has given new hope to Indian fans. It was the first international singles title won by an Indian this year. In the process, Ayush, a bronze medallist in the 2023 World junior championships, has announced his arrival on the big stage. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! His 21-18, 21-13 win over Canada's Brian Yang in the final might look straightforward, but it was a case of grit and persistence during the 47minute clash. Ayush, a product of the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA) here, even brushed off a cut on his right knee after a fall in the opening game. Despite some bleeding — he dismissed it as 'nothing major, just a scratch' — the 20-year-old Indian kept his focus and found the way to his first senior title. 'This title means a lot, feels great to win my first one. I hope to deliver this form in the remainder of the season and grab more titles. This will act as a confidence booster for me,' Ayush told TOI before boarding the flight to Canada, where he will be back in action on Tuesday. Ayush, who is an attacking player with a solid net game, found it tough to begin with as his ploy did not help him score points in the early exchanges. There was a serious need for him to outthink Yang's strong defence. With the first game going neck-and-neck for the first 12 points, Ayush tweaked it a little, using his half smashes and drops to take a 13-7 lead and eventually won the game. The 6' 4' player carried on the momentum into the second game to grab a 7-2 lead. He then powered his way to the title despite Yang attempting a comeback midway into the second game. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
