Turkey's Celebi challenges contract revocation in Bombay HC

Hindustan Times23-05-2025

MUMBAI: The Indian subsidiary of Turkish ground-handling firm Celebi Aviation Holding on Wednesday approached the Bombay high court to challenge the Indian government's revocation of its security clearance, which resulted in the termination of its agreement at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
Celebi Nas Airport Services India has filed an arbitration petition urging the court to issue directions to restrain the airport authorities from appointing a new company in its place.
The petition was filed days after the Adani Group-led Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which operates CSMIA, terminated its agreement with Celebi and appointed Kolkata-based firm Indo Thai Airport Services on a temporary basis for three months until it finalises a long-term partner.
CSMIA was among several airports across the country that terminated their agreements with Celebi earlier this month. This was after the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), India's top aviation security regulator, revoked the Turkish firm's security clearance, effectively barring it from continuing its operations in Indian airports. The decision, according to BCAS, was taken in view of 'national interests'.
While the official reasons were not detailed, the move follows heightened diplomatic tensions. Turkey had recently backed Pakistan and condemned India's counter-terrorism strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the Pahalgam terror attack in April.
In response to the revocation, Celebi's Indian subsidiary issued a statement distancing itself from political or national affiliations. 'We are not a Turkish organisation by any standard and adhere fully to globally accepted practices of corporate governance, transparency, and neutrality, with no political affiliations or links to any foreign government or individuals,' the company said.
Celebi filed three separate lawsuits, two of which challenged MIAL's revocation of its contract on the grounds of security clearance. The third plea is filed against BCAS, which states that the agency's decision was procedurally erroneous.
On May 16, Celebi had filed a similar petition in the Delhi high court, even as aviation officials said airport operations nationwide continued without disruption as alternative arrangements were implemented. In its plea, the company had said that the BCAS's decision to revoke its clearance by merely citing national security, without specific justification, was 'vague' and 'unsustainable in law.'
Celebi Aviation has had a significant presence in India's aviation sector. Since entering the Indian market via Mumbai airport, the company has expanded to nine airports across the country. These include major hubs such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Cochin, Kannur, Goa, and Ahmedabad. The firm's Indian operations cover a wide range of services, including passenger assistance, flight operations, cargo handling, warehouse management, and bridge operation services.

Why China Is Quietly Panicking Over A Pakistani Missile Found In India

New Delhi: In the fog of the brief but intense May 6-7 India-Pakistan air stand-off, a single smoking clue has emerged – one that is now causing serious heartburn in Beijing. Fragments of a Chinese-made PL-15E beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, launched by Pakistan's Air Force during the clash, were recovered by Indian authorities near Kamahi Devi village in Punjab's Hoshiarpur. This was not only any wreckage. The debris was largely intact, including its dual-pulse motor, datalink, inertial navigation system and the crown jewel (AESA radar seeker). India is now in possession of the brain and engine of China's most advanced air-to-air missile. And that is a nightmare scenario for Beijing. India's Operation Sindoor saw dozens of Rafales, Sukhoi-30MKIs and Mirages take the skies loaded with Meteor missiles, SCALP cruise weapons and Hammer bombs. Pakistan retaliated with Chinese-supplied J-10Cs and JF-17s, armed with the PL-15E – a radar-guided missile with a range upwards of 200 km. It was one of these missiles – fired in anger at Indian aircraft – that ended up in Indian territory, almost fully intact. Suddenly, China's hush-hush missile technology is in the labs of India's DRDO. Global powers are watching closely. World Wants a Piece of the Debris According to defence sources, the Five Eyes alliance (the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand) along with Japan and South Korea have all informally requested access to the missile's remains. Their target? The AESA seeker and dual-pulse propulsion tech – hallmarks of China's push to outpace Western missile systems. The incident, though underplayed in Chinese state media, is causing major alarm within the PLA's defence ecosystem. Developed by AVIC and showcased as China's answer to the American AIM-120D and European Meteor, the PL-15E has now been exposed in real combat and worse compromised. For Indian defence scientists, it is a rare windfall. With critical components in hand, India's missile development programmes like the Astra Mk II could get a serious boost, especially in radar jamming resistance, seeker tech and extended range propulsion. Not just that – Indian engineers could now cross-check the effectiveness of China's vaunted missile under real conditions and possibly expose weaknesses that even the PLA may not want to admit. Beijing Responds… Carefully China's defence ministry has been measured in its words. Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang avoided direct comment on the missile's failure or capture. Instead, he called for calm, saying, 'India and Pakistan are neighbours who cannot be moved… China is willing to play a constructive role.' But he did, notably, confirm that the PL-15E was used – marking its first operational deployment. According to SIPRI, a staggering 81% of Pakistan's arms imports now come from China, up from 74% a few years ago. This includes more than half its fighter jets (JF-17s, J-10Cs), missile systems like the PL-15E, air defence systems and satellite capabilities. Reports even indicate that China rushed new PL-15E missiles to Pakistan at the peak of the May conflict – part of Beijing's support to its 'iron brother'. What Happens Now? The missile debris is a trophy as well as a strategic liability for China, a tech boon for India and a milestone in South Asia's arms race. It also marks a shift – wars now may not need territorial invasion. They can be fought remotely through missiles, drones, radars and secrets buried in missile wreckage. China's weapon has spoken but not in the way Beijing hoped.

Bypoll turns into a war of words

Kozhikode: Nilambur bypoll campaign has turned into a war of words as opponents are using the remarks of senior leaders, including CM Pinarayi Vijayan and AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, to attack each other. While UDF is using the CM's 'anti-Malappuram' remark from a media interview about gold smuggling and anti-national funding, LDF is hitting back by targeting Venugopal for comparing welfare pension payments to bribery before the elections. Venugopal first raked up the CM's Malappuram remarks during UDF's convention on Monday. Then opposition leader VD Satheesan and KPCC chief Sunny Joseph picked it up and accused CPM of having a prejudiced view about Malappuram. Satheesan stepped up the attack on Wednesday by saying it was Vijayan who made serious allegations against Malappuram. "The CM's PR team sent notes to all Delhi-based media claiming that Malappuram was a hub for gold smuggling and extremism. After that, he gave a newspaper interview that echoed Sangh Parivar's line. The CM and Sangh Parivar are walking the same path," he said. Satheesan also said that CPM politburo member A Vijayaraghavan, who came to lead LDF's campaign in Nilambur, had insulted Malappuram many times. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Amplie seus horizontes: Estude no exterior (Clique para mais informações) Study Abroad Saiba Mais Undo "Does he still stand by his earlier statement that Priyanka Gandhi won because communal forces voted for her? Are the 95,000 people who voted for Priyanka in Nilambur all extremists? This question needs a clear answer," he added. LDF candidate M Swaraj hit back saying Congress was bringing up the Malappuram issue out of guilt over its past opposition to the district's formation when it had aligned with Jan Sangh. Meanwhile, LDF objected to Venugopal's comment that LDF govt was using welfare pension disbursements, including dues, as a 'bribe' ahead of bypoll. FM KN Balagopal said the remark insulted 62 lakh pensioners in Kerala by implying they vote for money and demanded an immediate retraction. Swaraj also responded, saying welfare pensions are a rightful benefit and calling them bribes insults the state's poor. Venugopal clarified that during the last Parliament elections, state govt paid two of the six or seven pending pension instalments before polls. "I only asked if they see the disbursement of dues ahead of elections that way. Twisting it into a bribery allegation is a deliberate misrepresentation," he said. Satheesan also said those who withheld pensions for six months are now releasing them just before elections and that is the wrong practice Venugopal pointed out. "We will speak out against the govt's attempts to exploit people's misery," he said. Satheesan said he is taking full responsibility for UDF's official stand in Nilambur. "The fight is between UDF and LDF and no one should try to distract voters from that. Not a single UDF vote will go elsewhere. Political and anti-govt votes will go to UDF. Even BJP is not serious about the contest. When the fight is between UDF and LDF, who else will get the anti-government votes? Nilambur voters are politically aware. Our majority will make that clear," he said.

Why are Europeans sitting on the fence? Indian delegation in Belgium slams West on terror

Former Union Minister MJ Akbar, part of an all-party Indian parliamentary delegation visiting Europe, has strongly criticized the international community for its double standards on terrorism. Speaking in Brussels, Akbar questioned why Indian lives are treated as less valuable, calling out the West's silence in the face of terror attacks against India."Are there two laws in this world? One for America and the West, and another for India?" Akbar was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. "After 9/11, the US went 12,000 kilometres to seek justice in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They held Pakistan accountable -- General Musharraf admitted it. But when India takes action just 500 kilometres away to fight terror, we are asked to show restraint,' he added.#WATCH | Brussels, Belgium | Former Union Minister MJ Akbar says, "...Instead of standing with us, why are so many Europeans sitting on the fence?... Yet we need to remind our friends in Europe that when it comes to a critical challenge that we face at the moment, we cannot find ANI (@ANI) June 4, 2025advertisementThe delegation, led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, is on a multi-nation tour covering Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, and the UK, with an aim to expose Pakistan's continued support for terrorism and advocating for justice for Indian victims of terror. Akbar stressed that India is not seeking revenge, but justice. 'Indian lives are equally precious. We share Europe's values of democracy and freedom. Yet, too many still sit on the fence.'Raising similar questions, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi launched a scathing attack on Pakistan for harbouring terrorists and undermining democracy. Referring to Pakistan's political instability and military interference, she said, 'This is senseless radicalisation.'She also criticised former Pakistan foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's past remarks on India's counter-terror actions, calling them cowardly and Shankar Prasad emphasised that India's stand is rooted in justice, not revenge. 'We ask the world: do the victims of terror have human rights or not?' he said, adding that India has shown restraint in the past but now demands global delegation includes MPs from across the political parties including BJP, Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), AIADMK—alongside former diplomats. The mission of the delegation is to highlight Pakistan's role in cross-border terrorism and push for a consistent, values-based global approach to inputs from ANIMust Watch
