North Korea's Kim cuts tape at coastal tourist site; foreigners not yet welcome
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un cut the inaugural tape at a new coastal tourist site during an extravagant ceremony on Tuesday, though the resort won't immediately be open to foreign tourists.
Kim toured the Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist zone, calling its construction "one of the greatest successes this year" and "the proud first step" toward a new era in the government's tourism industry, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.
Hotels and other accommodations for nearly 20,000 guests were built on the Hermit Kingdom's east coast, where visitors could engage in activities such as swimming, sports and recreation and dining at restaurants at the resort, state media said.
The resort, North Korea's biggest tourist site, will open for domestic tourists next Tuesday, KCNA said, but the report didn't say when it will start receiving foreign tourists.

Experts believe North Korea invested heavily in the construction of the resort and eventually will have to accept Chinese and other foreign tourists to recoup costs.

But North Korea has been slow to resume its international tourism because of lingering COVID-19 pandemic curbs, a flare-up of tensions with the U.S. and South Korea in recent years and worries about Western tourists spreading a negative image of its system.
Analysts say the resort will open to Russian tourists first, as evidenced by its booming military and other partnerships with Russia, before eventually opening to Chinese tours.

The Russian ambassador to North Korea and his embassy staff appeared at Tuesday's ceremony, according to KCNA, though the report didn't say whether any Chinese diplomats were also invited.
South Korean and American tourists won't be as fortunate, Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University's Institute for Far Eastern Studies in Seoul, told The Associated Press.
Lim said those tours won't likely restart anytime soon, though both new liberal South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump have expressed hopes to revive dialogue with North Korea.
Kim has been pushing to make the country a tourism hub as part of efforts to revive the ailing economy, with KCNA reporting that North Korea will soon confirm plans to build large tourist sites in other parts of the country.

When Cluely, a startup claiming to be building a product that helps people 'cheat' on everything, announced that it raised a $15 million Series A financing from Andreessen Horowitz, some people on X criticized the VC firm for backing the controversial company. After all, Cluely isn't just offering a product that may have questionable uses, but the startup has become famous for using what many people call rage-bait marketing. But Cluely's ability to grab attention is precisely what attracted a16z to the startup. Even before meeting Cluely's founder Roy Lee, Andreessen Horowitz's partner Bryan Kim thought that startups need new marketing tactics in the AI era. Kim, like many investors, previously thought that building a superb 'artisan' product with highly desired features was the key to a startup's lasting success, he explained on the latest a16z podcast episode. But shortly after the emergence of GenAI, he noticed that offering an exceptional product might not be enough. 'If you craft this thing and OpenAI or someone builds a new model to include that part in their product, you're done,' Kim said. 'So, it couldn't become this highly thoughtful, slow-build product. It needed to be something where founders moved extremely quickly.' That realization has led Kim to believe that speed, whether in marketing or product building, is paramount to creating a successful startup. Earlier this month, Kim published a post explaining his theory of why, for consumer-facing AI startups, 'momentum is the moat.' When Kim met Lee and saw that Cluely had been able to convert awareness into paying customers, he instantly knew that he had discovered a founder he had theorized about. 'It's been so hard to pierce through the noise of everything AI, especially in consumer, and to do that consistently is actually near impossible,' Kim said. How does Lee explain why his polarizing marketing approach has generated so much buzz? 'Most people don't know how to make viral content,' Lee said on the podcast. 'Everyone on X is trying to [sound] like the most intellectual, thoughtful person. But this just lacks viral sense.' Lee, instead, had studied why some posts on TikTok and Instagram blow up. 'Algorithms promote the most controversial things,' he said. 'I'm just literally applying the same principles of controversy on X and LinkedIn.' What many people don't know, Lee said, is that Cluely barely had a functioning product when the startup launched in April with its slickly produced video of Lee using its hidden AI to a lie to a woman about his age and knowledge of art while on a date. Despite having some semblance of a product, the startup has yet to unveil the solution it has been hyping. 'The internet is up in storm saying, 'Where's the product?'' Lee said. 'We're earlier than the latest YC batch of companies. Yet, we're generating more views than every single one of them.' Lee is convinced that once the product launches, it will generate even more excitement than if Cluely introduced it without 'marketing' the company for the last two months. (The official launch is set for Friday, June 27, he posted on X.) Kim sees Cluely's approach as a perfect embodiment of his 'momentum as a moat' theory. Since time is of the essence in AI, the a16z partner is convinced that Cluely can figure out its product on the fly. 'What's important is to try to build a plane as it's falling down the cliff,' Kim said. We'll all see soon if that plane soars or crashes.

Report: NHL, NHLPA close to agreeing on a new collective bargaining agreement
The NHL and NHL Players' Association are close to an agreement on an extension of the collective bargaining agreement, two people familiar with negotiations told The Associated Press on Thursday. The people spoke to the AP on condition on anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized. The league and union have been in talks since April and are on the verge of a memorandum of understanding done more than a year before the current CBA expires. The extension would provide extended labor peace in the sport that has had multiple work stoppages, including the 2004-05 lockout that wiped out an entire season, over the past three decades. Going to an 84-game regular season, up from 82, and reducing exhibition games to four per team, is believed to be among the changes that could be announced as soon as Friday in Los Angeles before the first round of the draft. A playoff salary cap and shorter maximum contract lengths have also been among the reported topics. Daily Faceoff was first to report a pending announcement of a new CBA. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh foreshadowed a quick conclusion to this process speaking at the Stanley Cup Final earlier this month. A full, new CBA would be the first since 2013. Hochul's ex-aide accused of working as Chinese foreign agent faces new bribery charges
A former top aide to Gov. Kathy Hochul and ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo who allegedly worked as a Chinese foreign agent was hit with more federal charges Wednesday tied to a COVID-era kickback scheme worth millions. Linda Sun and husband Chris Hu allegedly made off with as much as $8 million in the wide-scale fraud after she facilitated multiple contracts between New York state and two Chinese-based vendors for pandemic equipment, according to the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. One of the companies was run by Hu, 40, and his business partner, and the other was operated by Sun's second cousin, but the staffer never disclosed the personal ties, according to prosecutors. Mango Sun, 41, even allegedly doctored documents that showed the two companies were recommended by Chinese officials. Her husband is accused of keeping track of the expected ill-gotten proceeds on a spreadsheet under the title 'Me.' US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Joseph Nocella assailed Sun, of Manhasset, for enriching herself when the state 'was at its most vulnerable at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.' A lawyer for Sun said his client 'vehemently denied' Thursday's charges. Schaeffer. When the pandemic first engulfed New York, Sun was part of a group of officials tasked with obtaining personal protective equipment and used her influence to work with the Chinese government to get the much-needed items. The Jiangsu Department of Commerce recommended four Chinese vendors to state officials for supplies on March 20, but Sun allegedly meddled with the document by replacing the first suggested business with her cousin's company, prosecutors said. She also allegedly inserted wording that claimed her relative's company's surgical masks were 'the gold standard' in the altered email. She helped her hubby's company by claiming in a state document it was referred to by the 'Chinese chamber of commerce,' the feds alleged. Advertisement The cousin's company funneled $2.3 million in 2020 and 2021 in kickbacks to the indicted couple, according to a spreadsheet kept on their personal computer, according to prosecutors. The spreadsheet kept by Hu estimated the couple expected to clinch $8.02 million from the two companies and alleged plot, prosecutors said. 'This alleged scheme not only created an unearned and undisclosed benefit for the defendants and their relatives, but it also exploited the state's critical need for resources in a health crisis,' FBI Assistant Director in Charge Raia said in a statement. 3 Sun worked for Gov. Hochul and former Gov. Cuomo. Gregory P. Mango Sun was arrested and initially charged in September with acting as a foreign agent to discreetly push Chinese interests in exchange for millions of dollars in bribes and other fancy perks like salted ducks. Hu was also arrested the same time as his wife and accused of laundering money by opening bank accounts in the name of a close relative, even though it was for his own use. The new charges against the couple include honest services wire fraud, honest services wire fraud conspiracy and bribery. They also face conspiracy to defraud the United States because the federal government doled out COVID funds to the state and Hu was slapped with a tax evasion charge because he allegedly didn't report the corrupt payments on his income taxes. Advertisement Hochul's office previously said Sun was terminated in 2023 when allegations of misconduct first surfaced. The arraignment for new charges against Sun and Hu are scheduled for Monday. A lawyer for Hu didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
