7 heart-stopping new horror movies to see this summer

Time Outa day ago

If you love horror movies, you don't need to wait for October to get your fill of frights this year. It's a massive summer of scares at the cinema, with Hollywood leaning hard into the genre currently most locked in to pull in big crowds on a Friday night.
Will we emerge with nerves intact? Will we emerge at all? These seven upcoming releases will be raising heart rates long before Halloween season arrives.
28 Years Later
Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland return to the post-apocalyptic landscape of 28 Years Later (also back in cinemas this month) to remind us that, as the tagline goes, time hasn't healed anything. In fact, the infected seem to have the run of the place, leaving the human cast – Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell – fighting for survival. This could be epic.

In cinemas worldwide Jun 20
M3GAN 2.0
The killer doll is back to remind us that AI isn't just going to take our jobs, it's going to do cute, meme-able dances too. If that isn't upsetting enough, this sci-fi-horror sequel will be adding to the giddy shocks of the 2022 hit with more uncanny kills as M3GAN gets retooled to take on a weapons-grade AI called AMELIA.

I Know What You Did Last Summer
This franchise reboot knows what everyone did in the summers of 1997, 1998 and 2006 and hopes they want to do it all over again. Five friends cover up a deadly car accident, unleashing a malevolent force that survivors of the first movie (Freddie Prinze Jr! Jennifer Love Hewitt!) can maybe help. Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson will be hoping to pull off a Final Destination: Bloodlines rather than a Scream VI.

Bring Her Back
Aussie horror bros Danny and Michael Philippou delivered a breakout horror sensation with 2023's possession horror Talk to Her. They're back with more millennial-friendly frights in a supernatural frightener that might do for Sally Hawkins what Hereditary did for Toni Collette.
Anticipation levels: 😱😱😱
In US and Australian cinemas now. In UK cinemas Aug 1.
Weapons
Zach Cregger, director of 2022's excellent what's-in-the-basement horror Barbarian, looks like he's cranking up the menace a few notches in this modern-day Pied Piper riff about a whole class of kids who disappear one night. Julia Garner is the teacher, Josh Brolin an outspoken dad. The trailer looks terrifying.
Anticipation levels: 😱😱😱😱
In cinemas worldwide Aug 8
Him
Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw production company tosses the ball to debut director Justin Tipping (Dear White People) for a sports-themed horror that channels the obsessive nature of elite athletes into something dark and distressing. Think The Substance with more creatine.
Anticipation levels: 😱😱😱😱

Scottish city named best prepared to survive a zombie apocalypse

The latest offering from Danny Boyle, 28 Years Later, is due to be released in cinemas towards the end of the month, with TV shows and games like The Last of Us and The Walking Dead also fuelling interest in 'the undead'. As the anticipation builds for the release of a new post-apocalyptic horror film, research has determined the Scottish city best equipped to handle a hypothetical zombie attack. With Danny Boyle's upcoming film, '28 Years Later', ready to thrill audiences and a sustained interest in zombie-themed entertainment like 'The Last of Us' and 'The Walking Dead', Stirling emerged as the top dog in survival preparedness. ‌ According to data for the year to April 2025, there were 584 searches per 10,000 people in Stirling for 'survival kit', along with 1,350 searches for related terms such as 'Bug Out Bag', 'Emergency Kit', and 'Survival Tools', leading the pack in the country. ‌ Research, conducted by skip hire company LSS, also revealed that Perth secured the second spot with 410 searches, followed by Dunfermline at 348 searches per 10,000 residents. While Glasgow may not have topped the per capita search list, it did lead in raw numbers with approximately 6,920 survival-related searches per month; closely followed by Edinburgh and Aberdeen tallying 6,460 and 3,760 searches respectively. Across the UK, over the past year, searches for survival kits has rocketed by a whopping236-per cent. Moreover, in a cheeky attempt to gauge preparedness for a zombie onslaught, LSS sent a Freedom of Information request to UK councils only to discover a unanimous lack of contingency plans for such an event – although one English council acknowledged the prospect "tongue-in-cheek". ‌ Dorset Council stated: "The concept of a zombie apocalypse was referenced tongue in cheek in an article explaining what the emergency planning team do, which commenced 'Have you ever wondered what the emergency planning team do? The rumours of them hiding away in a darkened bunker drawing up plans of how to respond to the end of the world or a zombie apocalypse are (largely) untrue. Although we do have a bunker!'." Gary Noble, from LSS, said the findings, while amusing, suggest a healthy attitude from the public towards staying safe. "A zombie apocalypse, while entertaining on screen, in books, and in video games, would be a disaster for humanity, and thankfully, will never happen," he said. ‌ "While the results are a bit tongue-in-cheek, it's great to see people taking serious steps to protect themselves though, should an emergency happen. "Having a survival kit, food supplies, medical supplies, and even a bug-out bag in case you need to dash quickly, are all sensible things to have on hand. "While you might not need them to escape a zombie horde, they're great to have in case of an injury, a power cut, or an emergency last-minute trip to support a loved one." What should you have in a Bug-Out Bag? Torch and spare batteries: If the power goes out, you'll be glad you're not fumbling about in the dark. Head torches are even better as they keep your hands free. First aid kit: Plasters, bandages, painkillers - if you or someone else takes a tumble, you'll want this close at hand. Bottled water: At least two litres per person. You can manage without many things for a while, but water isn't one of them. Long-lasting snacks: Consider protein bars, nuts, that sort of thing. Not a Sunday roast, just something to keep you going if you're stranded for a bit. Also, keep an eye on the use-by date. While they will last, they won't last indefinitely! Phone charger (battery pack): No power means no phone, and no phone means no help, no updates, no nothing. A fully charged power bank is a lifesaver.

Tiny Rebel releases two new IPAs to celebrate 28 Years Later

The independent brewers have created two new IPAs to celebrate the release of the third instalment in the '28 Days Later' series, '28 Years Later', which will be released in cinemas on June 19. '2' is a blood orange liqueur-infused beer and '8' is a tropical pineapple brew, with both having 4.3 per cent ABV. Tiny Rebel suggests they can be poured over ice with an added spirit for a Singapore Sling-style drink. 'We're all about great times and great beer, so celebrating this epic film with equally as epic IPAs was a no-brainer." said Tiny Rebel co-founder Brad Cummings. The limited-edition beers are available from the Tiny Rebel website in packs of two (£7), four (£12), 12 (£32) and 24 (£60). Each purchase will also give fans the chance to win a three-night stay in the Lake District, the filming location of the new movie, which will include a 'wilderness survival experience'. Merchandise bundles and cinema tickets are also prizes. "We're thrilled to be teaming up with Tiny Rebel on the cinematic event of the year. Their bespoke brews for 28 Years Later are a brilliant twist on the unexpected, and the perfect way to bring the film to life beyond the cinema." said Peter Staines, Sony Pictures director of partnerships and promotions. Tiny Rebel will also be hosting special events to celebrate the new film as well as the original movie, 28 Days Later. On June 18, the Newport and Cardiff bars will host a quiz and watch-along of 28 Days Later, with tickets at £8 per person. The Newport brewery will also host a second event on June 19, which will include a screening of the original film, a pub quiz and a two-course meal, with tickets costing £28. Tables for six are available to book now.
