Paravel's website is shut down — 5 pieces of luggage to shop instead

NBC News22-05-2025

This just in: Popular luggage brand Paravel has shut down its website, and customers are taking to Reddit to report that their not-yet-shipped orders have been cancelled. There are even reports that the company has filed for bankruptcy.
We've covered the brand in the past, including in our story on the best luggage sets. The brand, which is known for its retro style trunks and weekenders, is currently still available on select third-party retailers — including Amazon and Bloomingdale's — but it is hard to say how long stock will last or if those items will even ship.
If you're looking for luggage for an upcoming trip and were considering Paravel, we've gathered alternatives below. All of these recommendations have either been recommended by experts or NBC Select editors in previous reporting or have high ratings from hundreds of reviews.
If you liked Paravel's trunk, consider this option from Away. It has a lightweight polycarbonate shell and a patented compression system inside that allows you to pack enough for a three-week trip, according to the brand. The trunk is also 20% off on the brand's website through Memorial Day. Also nice: Away just started selling their most popular suitcases, including The Trunk, on Amazon.
One of our favorite weekender bags, this option is similar in style to Paravel's popular canvas bags. NBC Select reporter Zoe Malin loves that it has a separate, zippered shoe compartment she can keep the dirty soles of her running sneakers away from her clothing. It also has several inner pockets to organize your stuff, top handles and a removable shoulder strap.
One of our NBC Select Travel Award winners, our testers liked how easy this bag was to maneuver. It has a polycarbonate shell and inner compression panels for maximum packing room. It also has multifunctional spinner wheels, a TSA-approved lock and a laundry bag included for dirty clothes when you travel.
Another Travel Award winner, Dagne Dover's Dakota Backpack, is great as a personal item on a flight or for commuting to work. Rebecca Rodriguez, NBC Select editorial projects manager, finds the neoprene material super easy to clean with warm water and soap. The backpack also has padded straps for comfort, a zippered front pocket and an interior laptop sleeve.
As the daughter of a pilot, I've been traveling my entire life, which means I've been through my fair share of luggage. This duffel has been a game changer for me. I've used it on weekend trips or as my personal item on a plane, along with my spinner suitcase. The top handles are long enough to throw over your shoulder, but it also comes with a detachable crossbody strap. The main compartment is super roomy and there is a separate compartment for shoes. I also love that the exterior is made from an easy-to-wipe-down nylon. I recently travelled with my 4-year-old and 4-month-old, and this bag fit diapers, tons of snacks, coloring books, bottles and a change of clothes for all of us.

5 happiest places to live in America

Reno, Nevada, has been named the happiest place to live in America, chosen as a reformative and affordable 'modern boomtown' with fair weather and creative outlets year round. The city was chosen by Outside , based on factors including overall well-being, public land and affordability, and climate change and inclusivity. Millions of surveys were scoured to assess the best urban areas in the US for well-being, before the researchers looked at house and rental prices and general walkability. Reno was ultimately judged the best in class, undertaking massive transformations to become more inclusive and accessible, attracting major companies like Amazon and Tesla without losing sight of its local arts and crafts culture. Reno, Nevada: With a population of 273,448 and a media house price of $550,000, Reno tops the list of the happiest places to live in America. Outside described Reno as a 'modern boomtown', bustling with green, open spaces, climbing gyms and a summer arts festival as part of a local revival. The outlet noted 'ample public land and mountain vibe' in its decision to award the city the top spot in the rankings. It is a far cry from the city's historic reputation as a hub of casinos and gambling - and part of a steady transformation to a more rounded economy. Reno was once the gambling capital of the United States - before nearby Las Vegas outgrew it. The 'biggest little city in the world' has long struck a chord with artists around the globe, featuring in everything from Johnny Cash's 'Folsom Prison Blues' to Springsteen's 'Reno', The Grateful Dead's 'Friend of the Devil' and REM's 'All the Way to Reno'. Now, the city is home to 18 ski resorts, popular spots for whitewater events, winding cycle trails, a host of music venues and several significant sports stadia. Reno today has enough adventure for locals and tourists year-round, making it a go-to destination inclusive of all. Wilmington, Delaware: Well-connected Wilmington neighbors Philadelphia, New York City, Baltimore and Washington D.C., offering walkability and community to residents. Its population is 71,569 and Delaware's largest city is built at the meeting point of the Christina River and Brandywine Creek, and has had its riverfront revitalized in recent years. Wilmington boasts nearly 70 parks, including the 178-acre Brandywine Park and the Alapocas Run, a 415-acre space filled with hiking and biking trails. Outside reports that the city has an inclusive local culture, with LGBTQ+ community leader Dinea Elliott Collins saying: 'When I travel to other parts of the country, I realize how safe and comfortable I feel in Wilmington.' The median house price is $255,000. New Orleans, Louisiana: Population: 369,749. With a median house price of $360,000, some 80 per cent of residents in New Orleans live within a ten-minute walk of a park, making the city one of the most attractive for residents who enjoy outdoor spaces. Culturally, the city has many attractions bringing visitors each year - from the colonial-era French Quarter to St Charles Avenue and Magazine Street's rows of antique shops. New Orleans remains one of the country's most-visited cities for its deep and complex history, preserving its past in a number of significant museums. In 2016, the city was also ranked the best in the US for live music, cocktail hour and cheap eats - but last for safety. Outside references the city's culture and cuisine, friendliness towards LQBTQ+ people and 'underrated' green spaces in awarding it third place. Cincinnati, Ohio: In the late 1800s, Cincy was dubbed the 'Paris of America', due to ambitious architectural projects that still line the streets of its urban center. Developed as a river town for shipping, the city remains an industralized hub with a large economy attractive to large employers and a quaint market pavilion for merchants to sell local produce. It also remains one of the greenest, with 88 per cent of residents living ten-minutes from a park - and a temperate climate ensuring beautiful year-round vistas to be found in the city's 365 parks and recreation areas. Benefitting from large-scale immigration from Germany in the 1840s, the city also benefits from a rich brewing tradition and has more than 80 organizations still making local beer - surely pushing it up the rankings for happiest places to live. Today, Cincinnati's population is 309,513and the median house price is $272,750. Charlottesville, Virginia: The independent city of Charlottesville is much smaller than most of its competitors (population: 45,373) but boasts the same balance of work opportunities and scenic getaways shared by the country's happiest. Outside notes the city's local University of Virginia has given Charlottesville a 'vibrant startup culture', with high rates of graduates and low unemployment. The city's commercial district, The Corner, also provides Charlottesville with a number of college bars and restaurants, as well as a considerable nightlife scene. Around the city, a 20-mile trail offers hikers and bikers a picturesque loop lined with places beautiful riverside spaces, and a number of breweries are 'scattered throughout the surrounding countryside', according to Outside. Deal of the Day: Apple's iPad Air (M3) is back at its lowest price ever

While I mostly use my iPad for relaxing and watching shows and videos on the couch, others use it as a total laptop replacement — NBC Select reporter Zoe Malin carried an iPad Pro, Apple Magic keyboard case and Apple Pencil to class back in her college days. The latest iPad Air (M3) is the swiss army knife of iPads — lightweight and easy to use, but powerful enough to tackle professional and creative tasks usually reserved for laptops. It's currently $100 off, matching its lowest price to date. Apple iPad Air (M3) deal Compared to the iPad (A16), the iPad Air (M3) has the much more powerful M3 chip inside, which has faster and smoother performance, especially in graphically demanding apps. It also has an anti-reflective, laminated screen with increased color depth and contrast. The iPad Air (M3) is also one of the cheapest models that's compatible with the Apple Pencil Pro, making it a good fit for artists and creatives. The Apple Pencil Pro acts much more like a real pencil than other models — it has extra tools like double-tap and squeeze shortcuts, plus it's pressure sensitive and supports rolling to change the orientation of shaped pens and brushes. Like other iPads, the iPad Air (M3) weighs about a pound and gets up to 10 hours of battery life. If an 11-inches screen sounds too small to you, the larger 13-inch iPad Air (M3) is also back at its lowest price ever right now. Why trust NBC Select? I'm a reporter at NBC Select who covers technology and fitness including recent stories on smartwatches, running shoes, cameras and more. For this piece, I checked Apple iPad Air (M3) prices and price history across multiple retailers to find the best deal.

They are known to make cooking healthy meals easier, quicker and efficient for everyone as they cut cooking time back hugely. However, it can be expensive to invest in a good quality one and shoppers often find themselves doing without. Now, they are in luck as they can snag the NInja Double Stack XL Air Fryer for £209.01 down from £269.99 on Amazon. Despite the smaller footprint, it has an extra-large 9.5L capacity - enough to cook for up to eight people - and can cook up to 55% faster than a fan oven (tested on fish fingers and sausages). READ MORE: Save £300 on 'fantastic' rattan garden corner sofa and footstool READ MORE: Amazon shoppers hail game-changing portable Ninja blender as 'best little blender ever' It features two drawers and two meal racks, giving shoppers four cooking levels. Rear-positioned fans also help ensure even cooking and crisping across all levels and the unit is said to use up to 55% less energy than a traditional oven - based on sausage cooking tests using the air fry function. With the air fryer comes six cooking modes - max crisp, air fry, roast, bake, reheat and dehydrate. It includes two 4.75L drawers, two non-stick crisper plates and two racks. All parts are completely dishwasher safe and it comes with a 2-year guarantee when registered. One shopper said: 'I love air fryers and I really love this one, it takes up less room than my last one. Yes it's a big investment but it's so versatile, well made and you have the security of having a well known and established quality brand. You can cook almost anything in it, it's easy to clean, saves a fortune by not using the oven, and the energy efficiency is great. Controls are easy to navigate. The top drawer tends to cook quicker than the bottom drawer which is fine. I would highly recommend this to anyone, small families, large families, absolutely great products.' Another wrote: 'This thing has absolutely no business being this good. It's like having a tiny kitchen wizard on your counter who somehow knows how to make chips better than you ever could. The 9.5L size is a game-changer — you can actually cook for real people, not just two sad potato wedges at a time.' 'I have cooked roast potatoes for a roast, perfect. Chips are crispy and not dried out or hard. Fish cooked well as well as chicken items. Can't wait to try everything else, possibilities are endless,' said another buyer. Some did share opposing opinions, as one shopper said: 'This is not the best. In fact I'm really disappointed with it. This is the second ninja we have purchased the first was brilliant couldn't fault it but this takes twice as long to cook anything.' Article continues below 'I am disappointed with my purchase, it has not functioned correctly for some time now,' said another. However, for £60 off a great quality option, the Ninja Double Stack XL Air Fryer could be a perfect buy.
