New Delhi: Countries like the UK, UAE, Thailand, and Switzerland have traditionally been the top choices for Indian tourists when it comes to international travel. However, there has been a change in the trend in the past few years. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Delhi office, there has been a significant rise in the number of Indians traveling to Japan. Both tourist arrivals and spending have increased considerably. The data further reveals that 233,000 Indians visited Japan last year.
They contributed approximately 56.1 billion yen (around ₹3,310 crore) to Japan's economy. The Japan Tourism Agency reported that each Indian tourist spent an average of 241,590 yen (about ₹1.45 lakh) per trip — a 53.6% increase compared to 2019.
The average duration of stay also rose to 16.3 nights, indicating that travelers are now seeking a deeper experience of Japan. Here are some of the interesting facts: Most Indian tourists prefer to travel alone in Japan.
Around 86.9 percent of Indians wanted to explore without a guide.
Nearly 65% were visiting Japan for the first time. Most of them visited popular cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima — a route commonly known as the 'Golden Route.'
The JNTO (Japan National Tourism Organization) Delhi office is now promoting lesser-known destinations.
JNTO tourists to explore different parts of Japan and experience the country's diversity beyond just the big cities.
Between January and March, 62,100 Indians visited Japan — a 24.8% increase compared to last year.
February saw a 29% rise in tourist numbers, mainly due to the appeal of Japan's winter scenery, especially the snow in Hokkaido.
In April, 37,300 Indian tourists visited Japan during the cherry blossom season, setting a new record.
The Expo 2025 to be held in Osaka is also attracting people. Especially the India Pavilion, which will showcase elements related to Indian culture, spirituality, and technology.

Hospitality giant Hilton to bring the Waldorf Astoria to Delhi's Aerocity

American hospitality chain Hilton on Wednesday announced the signing of two new hotels – the Waldorf Astoria and a Hilton Hotels and Resorts branded property in the capital in partnership with GMR Group-led Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). The greenfield projects are set to come up at Aerocity in the next three to five years. The luxury branded Waldorf Astoria property will feature 150 rooms and suites and large event spaces along with wellness amenities. This will be the company's second Waldorf Astoria branded property in the country after Jaipur, which is set to open in 2027. Meanwhile, the 350-room Hilton will be the first Hilton Hotels & Resorts property in New Delhi. 'The signings underscore Hilton's long-term commitment to India. As we continue to accelerate our growth in South Asia, these landmark properties and partnerships play a pivotal role in expanding Hilton's portfolio. This signing marks a significant step forward and reinforces our role in shaping the future of the Indian hospitality market,' Chris Nassetta, president and chief executive officer, Hilton, stated in a release. 'Partnering with Hilton reflects our continued commitment to bring world-class global brands to Aerocity, thereby positioning the facility as a force multiplier for Delhi's tourism and business economy,' said Kiran Kumar Grandhi, corporate chairman, GMR Group. Last month, the company had announced the launch of its luxury brand LXR Hotels & Resorts in India with a debut property in Bengaluru by 2026. Moreover, the company stated that it plans to open 29 new hotels and 5,252 keys in the country in the next five years. According to hospitality consultancy companies Hotelivate and Horwath, the branded hotel room count in the country is expected to grow to 300,000 by 2030. 'The introduction of Waldorf Astoria and our flagship Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand to GMR Aerocity marks a major milestone in our India growth strategy, bringing timeless luxury and modern hospitality to the capital. This signing is another step in our goal to grow our India portfolio to ten times its current size in the next decade, supported by vast infrastructure investment and increasing appetite for travel,' stated Alan Watts, president, Asia Pacific at Hilton. In an earlier interview to Business Standard, Watts had said the Waldorf Astoria brand is an important addition to the Indian market. 'The luxury market in India is very strong, and the brand (Waldorf Astoria) is recognised globally and holds importance not just for the domestic customer but also for the inbound consumer,' he had said.

'One of best things I've ever done': Elon Musk's father visits Ram Temple

Errol Musk, father of tech billionaire Elon Musk, visited the Ram temple in Ayodhya on Wednesday and described the experience as 'wonderful' and one of the 'best things' he has ever done. He also offered prayers at the nearby Hanuman Garhi temple. Although he had planned to see the Taj Mahal in Agra, the trip might be cancelled due to the intense heat in the region. 'It's wonderful, absolutely wonderful (Ayodhya visit). It's one of the best things I've ever done. I'm so glad I came to see it and can't wait till the temple gets completed, the big temple, it's going to be something like a wonder of the world,' Errol told PTI. Admiration for Indian culture and people Speaking to reporters after visiting both temples, Errol shared his thoughts on India and his spiritual experience: 'My experience here in India has been wonderful. I'm here (in India) to begin working with Servotech and am looking forward to spending a lot of time in the country. The temples are marvellous and so are the people.' Errol arrived at Ayodhya airport at around 2.30 pm, accompanied by his daughter Alexandra Musk. They left the temple town shortly after 4 pm. During his visit, he wore a traditional kurta-pyjama. Three-tier security system in place Security was heightened in Ayodhya during the visit. According to a senior police official, the town already has a three-tiered security system in place, including high-tech anti-drone technology capable of identifying and neutralising any unauthorised drones. 'There is already a three-layered high-level security cover in place in Ayodhya, which includes round-the-clock deployment of high-tech anti-drone systems capable of detecting and neutralising unauthorised aerial activity,' a police officer told PTI. 'However, no additional security cover will be extended officially for this visit as the existing measures are adequate,' he added. Surveillance cameras, visitor checks, and specially trained personnel are part of the standard security setup around the temple complex. Praise for Hinduism and Prime Minister Modi In an earlier interview with IANS, Errol Musk shared his deep admiration for Indian spirituality and culture: 'I think if the entire world followed Shiva, it would be just fine. I'm not an expert, but I find Hinduism fascinating. It's so ancient—it boggles the mind. The depth and history of the religion show us just how little we actually understand about the past. There's a profound sense of continuity and spirituality in India that is truly humbling,' he said. He also expressed great respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, especially for his role in shaping India's progress. 'He is one of the finest leaders in the world today. It's always a pleasure to watch him speak on TV. He carries himself with confidence and clarity. Under his leadership, India has taken giant strides, not only in economic terms but also in global diplomacy,' said Errol Musk. Visit part of green energy promotion Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Servotech Renewable Power System Ltd confirmed that Errol will remain in the country until June 6. He serves as the Global Advisor to the Haryana-based green energy company. 'His visit is squarely focused on accelerating India's burgeoning green technology and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure development,' the company said in a statement. Servotech's managing director, Raman Bhatia, is also expected to visit the Ram temple on Wednesday.

Indonesia Open: Sathish-Aadya upset world no 16; Treesa-Gayatri enter second round

It looked like a routine victory for world number 16 mixed doubles pair of Ye Hong Wei and Nicole Chan of Chinese Taipei when the won the first game 21-15 against Indian pair Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath at the Indonesia Open Super 1000 on Wednesday. However, the Indian pair had other ideas as they played with more precision and erred less on the nets to win the next two games and record a comeback victory against a high-ranked pair 15-21, 21-16, 21-17. Currently world number 37 in the BWF Rankings, Sathish and Aadya started well in the second game, trailing 9-10 at one point. Hong and Nicole erred on the nets twice to hand a lead to the Indian pair for the first time in the match, and the Indian pair took it with both hands. Aadya was brilliant on the net and drew the Taipei pair forward, leading to their net error, while Sathish was immaculate with his positioning of shots and powerful returns, often leading to a mistake by the Taipei pair. In the second game, the Indian pair didn't look back after taking the lead and won the game 21-16 to force a decider. A similar script played out in the final game when the Indian pair dominated the net, drawing errors from the opponents but also making a few. In the end, Sathish-Aadya emerged victorious after making their way to the second round. It was a straight win for the Indian women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand as they cruised to the second round after a straight-game victory over the Ukrainian pair of Polina Burhova and Yevheniia Kantemyr. The world number 12 registered a simple win in the first game with 21-14. However, the Ukrainians played much better in the second, and the Indian pair also committed more mistakes. The second game was a rollercoaster ride with both pairs making mistakes. At the mid-game break, the Ukrainian pair led 11-10, but the Indian pair recovered and were tied at 18-18. Treesa's drop and a net error from the Ukrainian pair meant that the Indian pair were leading 20-10. The Ukrainian pair saved two match points to make it 20-20, but a brilliantly positioned shot from Gayatri and a net error from Polina meant that the Indian pair secured their berth in the second round. Treesa-Gayatri will face the world number nine pair of Japan, Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto, in the second round. The two wins were the only positives for the Indian contingent on the day as Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde were shown the door by the Japanese combination of Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara 14-21 9-21 while Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh lost 15-21 9-21 to Denmark's Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch. India's top-ranked mixed doubles pair, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, also had to endure the same fate as they lost 11-21, 21-16, 14-21 against second seeds Tang Jie Chen and Ee Wei Toh of Malaysia. In men's singles, Kiran George fought well against Loh Kean Yew in the first game but was completely outplayed in the second game, losing in straight games 20-22, 9-21.
