The second week of the month means there aren't Knox County Commission and Knoxville City Council meetings, but lots of decisions get made in the interim.
Here's what I mean: The Knoxville-Knox County board that approves big new developments will meet, plus you'll have a chance to get to know police officers in West Knoxville.
Before we go into details, allow me to look backward for a minute to some of the biggest political news from last week.
Knox County commissioner and former school board chair Terry Hill is pushing for ethics reform after current school board chair Betsy Henderson advocating for private school vouchers statewide. The Republican-majority Knox County school board voted against including vouchers in its 2025 legislative priorities.
Hill, in a rare public rebuke of a fellow Republican (watch the video above), spoke directly to Henderson during the board's public comment.
"I represent the same constituency that you do, Ms. Henderson," Hill said. "You have made the statement publicly and privately that because you were elected overwhelmingly, what you say represents your constituency. I will tell you, in fact, it does not."
Also last week, former Knox County Sheriff J.J. Jones confirmed to me he's running again in 2026. Jones served as sheriff for 11 years, from 2007-2018. He was part of the mass removal known in Knox County political circles as Black Wednesday. He also implemented the county's 287(g) contract, which deputizes local law enforcement to act on behalf of ICE to detain asylum seekers or undocumented immigrants in return for training and funding.
The Knox County Planning Commission will vote on a new development at the intersection of Hall Drive and Dutchtown Road near the Webb School campus in West Knox County. The land is reserved for agriculture, but developers want the commission to rezone to build 8.5 units per acre. That's pretty dense for the edges of Knox County. Planning staff members are recommending the happy medium of dwelling five units per acre.

If you're a West Knoxville resident interested in community safety, KPD West District Commander Tracy Hunter will discuss trends in the district, crime prevention tips, answer questions and address the concerns of residents.
Important date: The council forum is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. March 11 at the Knoxville public works building, 3131 Morris Ave.
What you can do: Have your thoughts ready and show up! There are no deadlines to sign up to speak.
State Rep. Elaine Davis wants all government bodies to expand their public comment rules. Her bill comes as the Knoxville City Council is reconsidering its own rules following public comment periods that took hours as demonstrators spoke about issues that weren't on the agenda.
At Knoxville City Council meetings, community members can speak about a specific agenda item when that item is discussed, and about any topic at the end of the meeting during a general public forum.
In recent years, demonstrators have found a workaround. They begin by talking about the agenda item, then pivot to the topic of their choice.
Important date: The Tennessee House will debate the bill at 3 p.m. ET March 10, and the Tennessee Senate's State and Local Government Committee will debate it at 11:30 a.m. ET March 11.

Trump booed and cheered at the Kennedy Center while attending 'Les Misérables'
WASHINGTON (AP) — The drama in the audience rivaled the spectacle on stage on Wednesday at the Kennedy Center, where President Donald Trump went to the opening night of 'Les Misérables' as he tightens his grip on the venerable performing arts institution. It was his first time attending a show there since his election, and he was booed and cheered as he took his seat alongside first lady Melania Trump. Near the end of the intermission, someone loudly cursed his name, drawing applause. Several drag queens were in the crowd, their presence a protest against Trump's complaints that the Kennedy Center had hosted too many drag shows in the past. Despite the condemnation, the event had a MAGA-does-Broadway feel. Ric Grenell, the Trump-appointed interim leader of the Kennedy Center, was there, as were Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha. Before the show began, Attorney General Pam Bondi chatted with guests and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took selfies. Laura Loomer, the conspiracy theorist who has advised Trump on personnel decisions, posted a video from a seat near the stage. Trump walked the red carpet with the first lady when they arrived at the Kennedy Center, which he's been remaking in his image while excising what he describes as liberal ideology. 'We want to bring it back, and we want to bring it back better than ever,' Trump said. The Republican president has a particular affection for 'Les Misérables,' the sprawling musical set in 19th-century France, and has occasionally played its songs at his events. One of them, 'Do You Hear the People Sing?,' is a revolutionary rallying cry inspired by the 1832 rebellion against the French king. The three-hour production featured singing and dancing, with the sounds of explosions and gunfire filling the theater as protesters and soldiers clashed on stage. For Trump's critics, it was an unnerving echo of what's unfolding in Los Angeles, where Trump has deployed National Guard troops in response to protests over his deportation policies. 'Someone explain the plot to him," California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, wrote on social media. Terry Gee, a bartender, bought his ticket for the show in November and didn't mind Trump's presence. It's his sixth time seeing 'Les Misérables,' and he said, 'I'm going to enjoy the show regardless." Hannah Watkins, a nurse, only learned that Trump would be there when the Kennedy Center distributed information about extra security and she searched online to see what was happening. 'I've seen a lot of famous people so far, which is exciting,' said Watkins, who had claimed a spot near the VIP entrance with her mother. 'Honestly, we just like 'Les Mis' and are excited to be here.' Before Trump, presidential involvement in the Kennedy Center's affairs had been limited to naming members to the board of trustees and attending the taping of its annual honors program in the fall. But after returning to office in January, Trump stunned the arts world by firing the Kennedy Center's longtime director and board and replacing them with loyalists, who then named him as chairman. Trump promised to overhaul its programming, management and even appearance as part of an effort to put his stamp on the national arts scene. His latest moves have upset some of the center's patrons and performers. In March, the audience booed the Vances after they slipped into upper-level seats to hear the National Symphony Orchestra. Trump appointed Usha Vance to the Kennedy Center board along with Bondi, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles and Fox News Channel hosts Maria Bartiromo and Laura Ingraham, among other supporters. Sales of subscription packages are said to have declined since Trump's takeover, and several touring productions, including 'Hamilton,' have canceled planned runs at the center. Actor Issa Rae and musician Rhiannon Giddens scrapped scheduled appearances, and Kennedy Center consultants including musician Ben Folds and singer Renée Fleming resigned. Understudies may have performed in some roles Wednesday night because of boycotts by 'Les Misérables' cast members, but Trump said he wasn't bothered by anyone skipping the performance. 'I couldn't care less,' he said. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has adopted a more aggressive posture toward the arts. The White House has taken steps to cancel millions of dollars in previously awarded federal humanities grants to arts and culture groups, and Trump's budget blueprint proposed eliminating the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Trump has also targeted Smithsonian museums by signing executive orders to restrict their funding and by attempting to fire the director of the National Portrait Gallery. The president characterized previous programming at the Kennedy Center as 'out of control with rampant political propaganda' and said it featured 'some very inappropriate shows,' including a 'Marxist anti-police performance' and 'lesbian-only Shakespeare.' The Kennedy Center, which is supported by government money and private donations, opened in 1971 and for decades has been seen as an apolitical celebration of the arts. It was first conceived in the late 1950s during the administration of Republican President Dwight Eisenhower, who backed a bill from the Democratic-led Congress calling for a National Culture Center. In the early 1960s, Democratic President John F. Kennedy launched a fundraising initiative, and his successor, President Lyndon B. Johnson, signed into law a 1964 bill renaming the project the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts. Republicans clobber Democrats in Congressional Baseball Game for fifth straight year
Republican lawmakers crushed their Democratic counterparts Wednesday at the annual Congressional Baseball Game in Washington, DC. The GOP's 13-2 win over the Dems in Nationals Park marks the fifth straight year Republicans have defeated their political rivals on the diamond. Rep. NYC Mayor Eric Adams helps save Trump-linked Bally's casino bid with show of support
Mayor Eric Adams put his chips on the table for Bally's. The City Council voted to advance legislation Wednesday that would allow gaming operator Bally's to convert part of President Trump's former Bronx golf course into a casino — after the mayor intervened to help secure its passage. The proposal — referred to as a home rule message — requires 34 votes from the council for passage without the mayor's backing. But only 26 votes are needed — a simple majority, if the mayor declares his support. At the 11th hour on Wednesday, Adams issued a formal message of support to the council, and the measure passed 32-12, with seven abstaining. It means the bill can now be take up by the state Legislature. If approved, it would allow the golf course property, currently designated as state parkland, to be repurposed as a casino complex. Bally's will then be able to submit a bid for one of three covered downstate state casino licenses later this month. The firm hopes to build a 500,000-square-foot casino on the Bronx site by its golf course — now called Bally's Golf Links at Ferry Point — along with a 500-room hotel with a spa and meeting space, retail shops, a 2,000-seat event center and two parking garages with capacity for up to 4,660 vehicles. The City Council and Albany lawmakers recently approved such land use legislation allowing Mets owner Steve Cohen and Hard Rock to repurpose some of the lots around Citi Field for a casino complex. Cohen's bill got little to no resistance from the council — but Bally's, with its Trump connection, did. As part of the deal to acquire the golf course at Ferry Point in 2023, Bally's agreed to provide the Trump Organization an additional $115 million if it wins a casino license. As The Post previously reported, a council vote on Bally's proposal was postponed two weeks ago — provoking criticism from its CEO Soo Kim, who also fumed that lobbyists for rival bidder Cohen were allegedly whipping up votes against him. Bronx Democrats back the project. But Councilwoman Kristy Marmarato, a Republican whose district includes Bally's Golf Link at Ferry Point, opposes it. Her opposition triggered five of her GOP colleagues — including Council Minority Leader Joanne Ariola — to vote against the project that could benefit the president and his company. During the vote, Marmarato said her constituents opposed the proposed casino and blasted 'outside interference' and 'special interests' lobbying. City Hall insisted the mayor pushed for Bally's to get a fair hearing from the state Gaming Commission with its casino bid, and wasn't putting his thumb on the scale for the gaming operator or Trump. 'Mayor Adams supports a fair process with as many competitive casino bids in New York City as possible, each of which would bring good-paying union jobs and an economic boost to the community,' an Adams spokesman said. 'It does not matter which proposal is selected by the state so long as it's in New York City. We would be supportive of more than one selection in New York City, but that requires more than one competitive proposal.' Bally's applauded the Council's action. 'We appreciate the City Council, including the Speaker and Bronx Delegation in particular, for recognizing the opportunity that this project can afford to the Bronx and the City as a whole. Their actions today allow us to move forward to the next step of making this happen for NYC,' said Christopher Jewett, Bally's senior vice president of corporate development. He said Bally's has been a 'good neighbor' and will continue to work closely with elected officials and residents. Cohen's team declined to comment.
