Sundowns' Cardoso reacts to defeat and Zwane non-selection

'This group has a lot of quality players and obviously Themba is one of them,' said Cardoso. Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso issued a candid assessment following their 2-1 defeat to Pyramids FC in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final which took place at the 30 June Stadium on Sunday night. Pyramids edged the overall tie 3-2 on aggregate after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg. The Egyptian club made history by claiming their first continental championship. Cardoso insisted that the Cairo-based outfit displayed greater desire to lift the trophy. ALSO READ: Pyramids FC edge Sundowns to win Champions League 'When I say that it's important to compete at the highest level, that is exactly the answer that I've given so many times this season when playing Champions League,' said a crestfallen Cardoso. 'Why is it so difficult to beat teams from the north of Africa? It's because those teams can play football but they also play at a high level. Every duel is a life changer and every ball they fight for, they fight with all the energy they have. 'In some moments, I felt like those were things that were missing from our part. I don't think that we were worse when playing football against Pyramids. 'It was shown in both matches but Pyramids were competent and capable in both matches to position themselves in a way that prevented us from playing the way we wanted. But most of all, they gave their lives for every ball they played for and that's what makes a difference in the final sometimes.' One of the night's biggest talking points was Cardoso's decision to leave veteran midfielder Themba Zwane on the bench. Zwane, a crucial figure in Sundowns' 2016 title-winning campaign, was an unused substitute, a move the Portuguese tactician chose not to justify. 'I totally understand what kind of an answer you want and you are looking for but it's not time to speak about individual performance of players. This group has a lot of quality players and obviously Themba is one of them,' Cardoso added. 'It's not a matter of accepting that we lost but it's a matter of accepting that we didn't play a game at a level that we should have played in the first three parts of the game. Sundowns unable to scale Pyramids, as Egyptian club crowned kings of Africa

From there, it was Sundowns' task to aim for an unanswered goal to take the tie to extra time and penalties, or two to win. They had an outstanding chance for that spurned by Tashreeq Matthews seconds before the break. Ahmed Samy made it 3-1 heading in a free-kick in the 56th, and Downs needed two unanswered goals to win. Iqraam Rayners pulled one back in the 75th. Downs could not find another, despite substitute Peter Shalulile coming excruciatingly close . In the opening half, Sundowns paid for being that minute margin loose that can be so costly at the rarefied level of a continental final and went behind from a defensive error. Had the bounce of the ball gone their way, the Brazilians could also have gone to the break level. A cleverly-worked free-kick from the middle by Downs saw Aubrey Modiba chip short into the path of Rayners, who took the ball over his shoulder and volleyed high. At the other end a half-clearance fell to Ahmed Atef on the edge of the box to strike well, but too close to Williams, who took easily.

'I'm not going to be ‘Mr I Apologise' — Kagiso Rabada

The exact circumstances of how the drug was taken and in what environment were not outlined on Friday, nor would Rabada say if it was the first time he'd been in an environment where drugs were taken. He did acknowledge that the circumstances were 'just silly'. He reiterated that his statement published in April, through the players union the SA Cricketers Association, illustrated his contrition. 'The world doesn't revolve around me, there are people out there who are going through a lot worse. Moving into this WTC final, it is about that whole event, it's not just about me and this incident that has occurred, which is why I think it's a waste of time talking about this further. 'The people who are closest to me are the ones I felt I let down, but in saying that, life moves on. I'm not going to be 'Mr I Apologise' about it too much, I don't think I have to be, But I do not condone that action, I will never condone that action. But I've moved on.' Among the first people, aside from his family, to be informed about the positive test were Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma, who is also a close friend, and head coach Shukri Conrad.
