Evan Ferguson to Celtic transfer gets seal of approval as £100m rated striker tipped to explode

Daily Record21 hours ago

The Hoops have prioritised a new goalscorer this summer after losing Kyogo to Rennes in January
Shay Given insists Celtic could strike gold by snapping up Irish prodigy Evan Ferguson.
Ferguson, 20, exploded onto the scene at Brighton in 2022 and attracted huge interest from European heavyweights.

But the rising star has since endured a difficult couple of seasons, including a torrid 33-game goalless streak that eventually ended last October.

Once valued at over £100million, Ferguson has fallen out of favour at the Seagulls following a disappointing loan spell at Premier League rivals West Ham.
With Brendan Rodgers in the market for another striker this summer, there have been murmurs that Celts could offer Ferguson a platform to reignite his career at Parkhead. That would see him compete with fellow countryman Adam Idah for the nod up front.
And Republic of Ireland legend Given, 49, believes the youngster could find his shooting boots again in Scotland.
Asked about the prospect of Ferguson moving to Glasgow, Given joked: 'Better not tell Adam that!
'Evan just needs to find a home, if I'm being honest. Be it here or somewhere else. He needs someone to say, 'You're my player.'
'He went to West Ham for Graham Potter and you thought that was the perfect fit because Graham had him at Brighton. But then he didn't play so much at West Ham either.

'Michail Antonio and someone else was injured, yet they played Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus - not Ferguson. What happens next for Evan?
'I just think he needs to go, be it a loan for a season or some club buys him, and you build the team around him. I think he's a top player, I really do.

'I did some Malaysian TV recently with Bobby Zamora and he goes into Brighton once a week and coaches the strikers. Bobby said Evan was the best finisher at the club.
'Maybe because he burst onto the scene that everyone's been expecting so much so soon. But again, with young players, you need to have a bit of time.
'I just feel he's ready now to burst onto the scene for a full season with somebody. For us, with Ireland, it would be great too.

"I don't know if the finances would be to buy him, but if you said for a loan for the season, it would be perfect. But I'm not the financial power at Celtic or Newcastle, so I don't know!'
Working as a TV pundit in Ireland, Given keeps a close eye on Celtic's Irish trio - Idah, Liam Scales, and Johnny Kenny. Despite netting 20 goals, £9.5m frontman Idah continues to divide the green-and-white faithful.

However, Given - in Glasgow to promote next month's Newcastle's pre-season friendly at Celtic Park - rates the ex-Norwich City man highly.
The Magpies great said: 'First season as a regular starter, I think it's been a good campaign for him. But he'll want to improve on that and get more goals next season. I don't think 20's a bad return, if I'm being brutally honest.
'He'll also want to add to his international goals too. Liam Scales has come out of the team in recent weeks, I think. Adam and Scalesy are well regarded in the international set-up.

'Adam's competing with Ferguson and Troy Parrott and players like that. Ferguson, not that long ago, was being talked about as a £100m player, and Adam started on Friday night against Senegal.
'So, that's where he's regarded in the Irish set up, by the manager especially. He was the first choice on Friday night while Ferguson started against Luxembourg. Adam's very much competing for that number nine jersey.
'He's a good player, and with Brendan - who is a brilliant manager and coach - he's in the right environment. Celtic's a big club and I think Brendan will keep improving him as a player. I think he's in the perfect position.'

Rookie forward Kenny, 22, returned from a prolific loan stint at Shamrock Rovers in January but spent most of the campaign on the periphery.
He notched his first goal for the champions in the 5-1 rout at Pittodrie and also made a cameo in the Treble-busting Scottish Cup Final defeat at Hampden.

Given hopes he has a bright future in the game and added: 'He was on loan at Shamrock and did well. I know obviously with Dermot there's a connection with Celic and Shamrock. He's come back here and played a couple of games off the bench.
'You'd need to ask Brendan for his plans for Johnny for the season. Does he see him as part of the plans or him going back out on loan? Does Brendan think he's ready? I don't see enough of him to know for sure.
'But again, from an Ireland perspective, we'd really like to see more of him for Celtic. When you get a flavour of first team football, you just want more and more.
'Even at Shamrock Rovers, the League of Ireland's flying at the minute. Damien Duff has added a huge problem to the league as well. 'The stadiums are sold out now.
'When you go to play in front of crowds, it gives you such a lift. I remember for myself back in the day, I went to Swindon as a kid and I loved playing in front of decent crowds. It doesn't matter how big the crowd is, that edge is there.
'When you then go back to the reserves, it's not the same. It's a bit of a step back. So for Kenny, he'll want to play again, having had that taste of first-team football.'

'Starting to come good' - but Makelele says Blues still need Maignan and more

Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele says Enzo Maresca needs to be left alone to work but needs several signings - including goalkeeper Mike Maignan - to emulate Paris St-Germain's success with a young Blues ended last season with the youngest average age among their starting XI of any team in Premier League history but qualified for the Champions League with a win at Nottingham Forest on the final also won the Conference League with a 4-1 win over Real Betis just three days later and now embark on a campaign in the newly expanded Club World Cup, which begins this asked about his view of Chelsea, having left the club under the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership, Makelele, a former player and coach at Stamford Bridge, said: "I think Chelsea are doing well. They are starting at the beginning [of their project], very slowly."In the beginning, they changed a lot of players and managers. The new manager [Enzo Maresca] made sure Chelsea finished the season in a good way. They qualified for the Champions League and won a trophy. I think this new Chelsea can be successful now."We need to wait for Chelsea to win the Premier League again, and they are starting to build a strategy and some stability. But, for me, the most important thing is they need to leave Maresca working in a good way, like Paris St-Germain did with Luis Enrique."They need stability if they are to fight for a title. I am a Chelsea fan, and I was worried when I saw Chelsea struggling in the beginning [under new owners Clearlake-Boehly], but now they are on a positive path and can return to the Chelsea of the past, which was at a high level."The former defensive midfielder saw 'the Makelele role' named after him while playing under Jose Mourinho in west London. He joked that should now be known as "the Caicedo role".Makelele also praised the signing from Ipswich of striker Liam Delap, who will make his debut in the United States, adding: "The project is starting to come good. The future is bright. It takes a lot of young talent to try to make Chelsea successful."I like Nicolas Jackson. We can't criticise him. But of course, Chelsea need some better players if they are to win the Premier League, and they are also back in the Champions League."They needed a second striker [in Delap]. He is compatible with Jackson and adds competition. Jackson can't do it all alone. I appreciate him. He fought all season. "He did a good job, scored a lot of goals, and got some assists, but of course another striker is welcome."Makelele hopes the Blues will add a goalkeeper, after seeing France number one Mike Maignan strongly linked to a move to Chelsea. He added: "Maignan is one of the best in the world right now and I think Milan won't want their best goalkeeper gone."But if Chelsea can take him, it's better, because to win trophies you need a good goalkeeper. You look at PSG and they had a young squad but a great goalkeeper in Gianluigi Donnarumma."Chelsea need a goalkeeper, striker and maybe winger to fight for the Champions League and Premier League next season."

Viktor Gyokeres preference clear as Man Utd and Arsenal bid to resolve saga

Viktor Gyokeres is wanted by Manchester United and Arsenal, after scoring 102 goals in 97 games for Sporting Lisbon, with a move to the Premier League on the cards this summer Ruben Amorim knew it was only a matter of time before Viktor Gyokeres took the next step in his career and moved on to bigger and better things. When he was leaving Sporting Lisbon to take over at Manchester United back in November, Amorim was asked if he intended to take prolific goalscorer Gyokeres with him. ‌ 'If I start joking about this Gyokeres situation, I'll get in trouble,' said Amorim. 'This is my city, this is my country, so I'll respect it. Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life will probably go somewhere else.' ‌ Having seen out last season with Sporting where he plundered a phenomenal haul of 54 goals in 52 games in all competitions, Gyokeres is now ready to move on. Gyokeres is good friends with fellow goal machine, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, and could soon be rivalling him – and Liverpool's Mo Salah – for the crown of the Premier League's top scorer. United is the logical destination for him, where he would be reunited with former boss Amorim, but Arsenal are also determined to land the 27-year-old Sweden star. Gyokeres has enjoyed a meteoric rise, from being let go by Brighton, to a spell at Coventry, then to Sporting and now on the brink of a mega-money move to the Premier League. It was at Coventry where Gyokeres first came up with his unique goal celebration, one which sees him cross both hands over his mouth, to form a mask. Debate has raged over the meaning of the celebration, with former Coventry team-mate Josh Eccles suggesting it is a nod to the character Hannibal Lecter in the film Silence of the Lambs. "He [Hannibal Lecter] eats people and Viktor destroys defences," said Eccles. ‌ Others believe the celebration was inspired by the masked villain Bane, from the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises. What is certain is that Gyokeres has been feasting on defences in Portugal and all over Europe since joining Sporting and has proved as deadly as Bane and Hannibal Lecter. A remarkable haul of 97 goals from 102 appearances in two seasons at Sporting has seen Gyokeres become a target for United and Arsenal, who will go head-to-head for him. ‌ Gyokeres served notice of his ability to terrorise Premier League sides in the Champions League last season, with a stunning hat-trick in a 4-1 win for Sporting over Pep Guardiola's City. As well as averaging more than one goal a game last season, Gyokeres has also scored nine in just six appearances for Sweden, underlining his ability to score at any level. Those who know Gyokeres well and have worked with him speak of a player with a relentless work ethic, strong mentality, laser focus and a fierce desire to win. ‌ Having just turned 27, Gyokeres is hitting the peak years of his career, which is why United and Arsenal – both crying out for a proven and prolific goalscorer – want to land him. Having agreed last summer to give Sporting one more season, Gyokeres insists he struck a gentleman's agreement with the club, allowing him to leave for a certain price. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has denied this and is adamant Gyokeres will not be allowed to leave for lower than his release clause of £85million. Reports from Lisbon suggest Gyokeres is willing to go on strike to get the move he wants, a move dismissed by Varandas and the Sporting hierarchy. What seems likely is that the future of Gyokeres will be a protracted saga over the summer, unless United or Arsenal are willing to meet Sporting's valuation. On the evidence of his phenomenal form of the last two seasons, Gyokeres would appear to be worth it.

'Add quality from a position of strength'

Liverpool's decision to spend £100m - and potentially £116m - on Florian Wirtz after being crowned champions is following the methods that served them well in the glory days of great Anfield figures of the past always insisted the way to sustain success was to add quality from a position of strength rather than chase expensive arrivals to cure Liverpool's position could not be much stronger after winning their 20th is also a vindication of the policy of keeping their powder dry financially last summer, when many supporters wanted Liverpool to go into the markets, especially after a deal for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi won the Premier League in Arne Slot's first season and now have the resources and pull to sign one of Europe's most sought after young stars.
