‘Champ Awards' honors 88 Charleston County students for service and character
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – More than 80 students in the Charleston County School District were honored during the Coaches for Character 'Champ Awards' over the weekend.
The annual program celebrates two unsung heroes from every eighth and 12th grade within the school district who have accomplished wonderful things in their homes, schools, churches, or communities.
The school district's selection is based on character, community service, academic effort, and overcoming adversity.
During Saturday's ceremony, 88 students were recognized for their accomplishments, and award winners were able to thank their families, teachers, and mentors.
Sports Illustrated's top two returning college quarterbacks in the country, Clemson's Cade Klubnik and USC's Lanorris Sellers, served as speakers during the ceremony.

Advertisement "Obviously a top program and I really liked working with Coach Streeter and Coach Bobo," said the quarterback. 'History. Tradition. Winning. They are the biggest game on everyone's schedule.' The Bulldogs received a commitment from Jared Curtis in the 2026 recruiting class. Curtis is the top-ranked quarterback in his class based on the 247 Sports composite rankings. Georgia hasn't received a quarterback commitment in 2027 although it's obviously still early. To land Bourque, the Bulldogs will have plenty of competition. The signal-caller told Wiltfong that he will visit the Michigan Wolverines, Penn State Nittany Lions, Alabama Crimson Tigers and Oregon Ducks next. Advertisement Bourque, though, has yet to nail down his exact visiting schedule. The only commitment Georgia has received for 2027 is from three-star wide receiver Gavin Honore. Clemson baseball lands promising transfer from SEC program For the second time this week, the Clemson Tigers have added a player from an SEC baseball roster via the transfer portal. Infielder Bryce Clavon, who transfers after one season with the Georgia Bulldogs, announced his commitment to Clemson in a post to social media Saturday. Clavon was a freshman for coach Wes Johnson's team in 2025, appearing in 27 games and making one start. He joins former Alabama Crimson Tide pitcher Ariston Veasey as SEC players to transfer to Clemson this week. A right-handed hitter who's listed as 6-feet, 187 pounds, Clavon committed to Georgia after graduating from Kell High School in Stockbridge (Ga.). Perfect Game ranked him the No. 4 overall shortstop in the nation coming out of high school. Clavon was 5-for-15 with a home run, a double and a triple last season. He was also 2-of-2 on stolen base attempts. Clavon played behind starting shortstop Kolby Branch and did not appear in the game when Clemson and Georgia met as top five opponents on April 22 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, a 3-0 Tigers shutout victory. Clavon is the Tigers' second commitment in the transfer portal Saturday. Earlier in the day, shortstop Tyler Lichtenberger committed to Clemson from Appalachian State. Lichtenberger was the Sun Belt conference Freshman of the Year in 2025, batting .341 with 13 doubles, three home runs and 44 RBIs. Clemson has added four players via the transfer portal since their season-ending loss to Kentucky in the Clemson Regional last Sunday. In addition to Clavon, Lichtenberger and Veasey, the Tigers also added right-hander Hayden Simmerson from Division II Catawba College in North Carolina. App State shortstop Tyler Lichtenberger has committed to the Tigers after making a visit to campus on Thursday, according to multiple sources. The standout freshman brings immediate impact potential after an impressive debut season in Boone. Lichtenberger was named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year in 2025, hitting .341 with 13 doubles, three home runs, two triples and 44 RBIs. He recorded 24 multi-hit games, reached base in 46 of 52 regular-season contests—including the first 34 games of the year—and also swiped seven bases in nine attempts. His 70 hits ranked among the top 10 in the conference. With Andrew Ciufo exhausting his eligibility, Clemson had a clear need at shortstop heading into next season. While incoming freshman Dax Kilby is a highly regarded option, there's a strong chance he's selected in July's MLB Draft, potentially opening the door for Lichtenberger to step into a starting role right away.
