Germany's data protection commissioner has asked Apple and Google to remove Chinese AI startup DeepSeek from their app stores in the country due to concerns about data protection.Commissioner Meike Kamp said in a statement on Friday that she had made the request because DeepSeek illegally transfers users' personal data to China. The two U.S. tech giants must now review the request promptly and decide whether to block the app in Germany, she added.DeepSeek did not respond to a request for comment. Apple and Google were not immediately available for comment.According to its own privacy policy, DeepSeek stores numerous personal data, such as requests to its AI programme or uploaded files, on computers in China."DeepSeek has not been able to provide my agency with convincing evidence that German users' data is protected in China to a level equivalent to that in the European Union," Kamp said."Chinese authorities have far-reaching access rights to personal data within the sphere of influence of Chinese companies," she added. The commissioner said she took the decision after asking DeepSeek in May to meet the requirements for non-EU data transfers or else voluntarily withdraw its app. DeepSeek did not comply with this request, she added.DeepSeek shook the technology world in January with claims that it had developed an AI model to rival those from U.S. firms such as ChatGPT creator OpenAI at much lower cost. However, it has come under scrutiny in the United States and Europe for its data security policies.Italy blocked it from app stores there earlier this year, citing a lack of information on its use of personal data, while the Netherlands has banned it on government devices.US lawmakers plan to introduce a bill that would ban US executive agencies from using any AI models developed in China.Reuters exclusively reported this week that DeepSeek is aiding China's military and intelligence operations.

Trade pain, stock gain: Nike shares jump 15% as it shifts production from China; braces for $1 bn tariff blow, price hikes ahead
Nike shares surged 15% at the opening bell Friday after the company announced a shift in production away from China, even as it warned that tariffs imposed by the Trump administration will cost it about $1 billion (roughly Rs 8,300 crore) before internal adjustments take effect. The US sportswear giant said it will begin implementing 'surgical' price increases in the US starting this fall, a move that could affect back-to-school shoppers. Walmart had earlier warned of similar seasonal price hikes due to tariffs, AP reported. Nike said about 16% of the footwear it imports into the US is currently made in China, a figure it plans to reduce to the high-single-digit range by the end of fiscal 2026. 'Production will be shifted elsewhere to avert looming tariffs,' CFO Matthew Friend told analysts during a Thursday conference call. The announcement came as President Donald Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed that the US and China have signed a trade agreement, though they offered no details. China's Commerce Ministry also issued a statement confirming 'further confirmation of framework details' in the trade talks but did not mention US access to rare earth exports—another sticking point in recent negotiations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Doutor: Reverter encolhimento muscular após os 50 depende deste hábito noturno Revista do Homem Saiba Mais Undo Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, and Puma were among 76 companies that had petitioned the Trump administration earlier for an exemption on footwear tariffs, warning that new duties would have a major impact 'at the cash register for every family,' the AP report said. Nike reported a quarterly profit of $211 million, or 14 cents per share, with revenue totalling $11.1 billion, slightly ahead of Wall Street expectations. But analysts warn the company still faces challenges. 'While it's still the most significant brand in sportswear, a boredom factor seems to have settled over the Nike brand,' wrote Neil Saunders, Managing Director at GlobalData, citing weaker growth in China and rising anti-US sentiment. 'Nike is already facing a pullback in spending by Americans, who have grown anxious about the direction of the US economy,' AP noted. The company's back-to-school price strategy, combined with reduced reliance on Chinese manufacturing, aims to mitigate the expected impact of tariffs while shoring up its core market presence.

Buffalo Sabres rejected $65 million Jordan Kyrou trade offer for JJ Peterka, claims insider in explosive NHL rumor
NHL-Jordan Kyrou of the St. Louis Blues (Credit: Getty Images) In what could be one of the more shocking developments of the NHL offseason, a trade rumor surfaced suggesting that the Buffalo Sabres declined a high-stakes offer involving St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou. As per a NHL insider Eklund, the Blues reportedly proposed Kyrou. Kyrou is currently on an 8year, $65 million contract. That too in exchange for Sabres winger JJ Peterka. The rumor has caused ripples across NHL circles. As Kyrou, a 26-year-old with back-to-back 70-point seasons, considered a top-tier offensive talent. However, the Sabres' front office allegedly didn't flinch at the proposal. Instead, they chose to retain Peterka, their 22-year-old German-born rising star who is coming off a breakout year. Breaking News: Huge NHL Trade - Buffalo Sabres Trade JJ Peterka to Utah Mammoth JJ Peterka seen as untouchable despite Kyrou's status What makes the reported rejection even more compelling. That is that Jordan Kyrou isn't just any player. His current contract, worth $65 million through 2031. This reflects his status as a central figure in St. Louis' offense, he notched 31 goals and 36 assists this past season. This reinforces his role as one of the team's most dynamic forwards. Although some fans questioned the move. Especially given Buffalo's 13th consecutive absence from the playoffs, and the team appears committed to developing its homegrown talent. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like nhà container: Xu hướng nhà ở hiện đại và bền vững 2025 Visionary Echo Tìm Ngay Undo Rather than making high-cost trades. For now, Peterka appears to be part of their core moving forward. Blues may explore other trade options after rejection From the St. Louis Blues' perspective, the alleged offer indicates a possible shift in strategy. After failing to make the playoffs, general manager Doug Armstrong appears open to shaking up the roster. Trading away a marquee player like Jordan Kyrou would have signaled a significant pivot. This potentially aimed at acquiring younger assets and rebooting their lineup. For now, both franchises remain in very different places strategically. And if this rumor holds weight. Buffalo's rejection could be seen as a major vote of confidence in their internal development pipeline.
