DMK booth panels to expand with youth wing cadre, social media handler
CHENNAI: At the DMK general council meeting in Madurai, party cadre were told to expand booth-level committees across the state by including at least two youth wing members, one of whom should be responsible for handling social media, sources said.
The meeting also directed that booth panel members reach out to every beneficiary of at least one government scheme within their respective booths, each consisting around 1,000 voters.
The social media person in each booth will be responsible for digitally connecting with the voters and sharing messages about the government's achievements through WhatsApp groups.
Generally, a DMK booth committee consists of 10 members, with each member responsible for covering around 100 voters. The inclusion of youth wing will give an opportunity to train young people.

Chennai: Both AIA and DMK are focusing on involving youth in booth committees to use technology to reach out to voters and to counter actor Vijay's perceived appeal especially among young voters. Tamil Nadu has 68,467 polling booths for 6.37 crore voters. Party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is firm on the age limit and the AIADMK headquarters is vetting the committees; district secretaries have submitted the details with photographs of the members. The party had 19 members per committee during general elections; this time it's aiming for nine. "Previously, elders also formed part of the committee. Now the IT wing is carefully examining the members to ensure compliance," said a district secretary. In some places, the party is reportedly facing challenges in finding youth willing to be members. The DMK plans to have 10 to 12 members per committee and inclusion of youth wing members is mandatory unlike in the past. A youth wing member from each booth will receive training in the effective use of social media. "The observers posted by the DMK headquarters for each assembly constituency are tasked with tweaking the composition of booth committees to make them effective," said a leader. Meanwhile, Vijay's TVK, which had a meeting for booth agents in Coimbatore in April, is planning another meeting in a different region to demonstrate its presence across the state. TVK functionaries also question whether the Dravidian majors can fill their booth committees. "These parties should display the strength of their members like our leader, Vijay," a TVK functionary said.

Kanimozhi calls on Stalin after Operation Sindoor outreach; BJP praises her
Chennai: DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi called on chief minister M K Stalin at his residence on Wednesday after completing her Operation Sindoor outreach to five different countries. After the meeting, Stalin appreciated Kanimozhi for her statement in Spain that the national language of India was 'Unity in Diversity'. "I am proud of my sister Kanimozhi for being the voice of India and speaking about unity," Stalin said in a social media post. When she was in Spain, Kanimozhi was responding to a question from the media there about the national language of India. The video of her spontaneous response went viral on social media and had won applause from various quarters. Even the BJP leaders including TN BJP president Nainar Nagenthran welcomed the remarks. She was heading one of the all party panels formed by the BJP govt which was sent to various countries to present India's perspective on terrorist elements in Pakistan and Operation Sindoor. Her delegation visited Russia, Latvia, Slovakia, Greece and Spain where the team met the govt representatives and gave a call for unity against terrorism.

Exclusive: Amid Kannada Language Row, Kamal Haasan's "No Apology Over Gunpoint"
Chennai: A day ahead of the pan-India release of his much-anticipated film 'Thug Life', actor and politician Kamal Haasan addressed the media but refrained from revisiting the controversy over his recent remarks about the Kannada language. The film will release across India and globally on Friday - except in Karnataka. Mr Haasan, who has been under fire for saying Kannada was born out of Tamil, earlier made it clear he has no intention to apologise or withdraw his remarks. "There can be no demand for an apology in a gunpoint situation," a person in the know of these developments told NDTV, alluding to pressure from fringe groups and political outfits. Mr Haasan told reporters he would speak at length later, as "a Tamil who wants to speak a lot." On Tuesday, he said his comments were made purely out of affection for the late Kannada actor Rajkumar and his family, and denied any malice toward Karnataka or the Kannada language. Amid strong observations from the Karnataka High Court, the actor, who approached the court seeking protection for the release of the film, later said he would not release the film in Karnataka. When asked the idea behind this, the person added, "There could be a sense of fear; audiences may avoid theatres. A Karnataka release will happen only in a conducive atmosphere." This suggested Mr Haasan is prepared to forgo revenue. Another lamented how freedom of expression often becomes the first casualty during such controversies. "Fringe groups tend to have their way threatening to trigger law and order problems. In a democracy, there should be conversations even amid disagreements," the source said. Support came from the ruling DMK, which had also backed Mr Haasan for his nomination to Rajya Sabha. KN Nehru said there was nothing wrong in what Mr Haasan commented. "Tamil is the root of south Indian languages like Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam. What he said is correct and historically factual."
