Carlsberg Malaysia 1Q profit rises 7.5% to RM94.5m, declares 23 sen dividend
CARLSBERG Brewery Malaysia Bhd saw a 7.49% year-on-year increase in net profit to RM94.52 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (1Q25), driven by the absence of a deferred tax liability linked to its Sri Lankan associate Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC.
The group declared a first interim dividend of 23 sen per share, payable on July 28.
However, quarterly revenue fell 8.67% y-o-y to RM662.81 million due to lower sales volume from an earlier Chinese New Year and a high base from trade purchases in the previous year.
Revenue from Singapore dropped 8.8% to RM168.2 million, impacted by softer demand and currency fluctuations.
Carlsberg said it remains focused on navigating macroeconomic uncertainties through cost optimisation, brand premiumisation, product innovation, and digital transformation. — TMR

Steady consumer demand to spur Carlsberg
PETALING JAYA: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd is expected to see solid earnings growth underpinned by steady consumer demand. RHB Research noted that for the immediate term, respectable earnings growth is seen in the second quarter of the current financial year (2Q25) as the 2Q24 sales were impacted by weaker demand post a price increase. 'Overall, we expect consumption to remain steady in FY25, underpinned by tight enforcement to keep contraband trade at bay whilst the positive traction of tourist arrivals and rise in disposable income should provide further support. 'Against a backdrop of rising operating costs, we believe that Carlsberg Malaysia's premiumisation strategy, the full impact of price increases, as well as its focus on enhancing operational efficiency and productivity will provide buffers to protect profit margins.' The reseach house said Carlsberg Malaysia would also focus on marketing and consumer engagement initiatives to stimulate consumption and spending. For the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (1Q25), Carlsberg Malaysia saw its top line drop by 8.67% to RM662.81mil from RM725.76mil in the previous corresponding quarter. Despite the lower revenue, the brewery posted a 7.49% increase in net profit to RM94.52mil from RM87.93mil in 1Q24. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research said Carlsberg Malaysia is off to a strong start, with the Malaysian market leading its performance. 'The Singapore operations continued to be weighed down by higher advertising and promotional (A&P) spending, reflected in lower earnings before interest and tax margins. 'We expect continued A&P investments in its Singapore operation to build Sapporo's market share, which has yet to match that of its predecessor Asahi.' The research house said growth in FY25 should be underpinned by stronger sales in Malaysia, driven by better disposable income and rising tourist arrivals, increasing contributions from the Sapporo brand and the full-year impact of earlier average selling price hikes. 'While elevated A&P spending may pressure margins, this could be partially mitigated by improved input costs from a potentially stronger ringgit.' UOB Kay Hian said Carlsberg Malaysia's earnings came in within expectations. 'Carlsberg Malaysia reported a core net profit of RM94.8mil in 1Q25. This is within expectations, making up 26% of both our and consensus full-year forecasts.'

OSK's momentum to rebound across key segments
HLIB Research said on the current trajectory, the capital financing segment is poised to deliver record-high earnings in financial year 2025. PETALING JAYA: OSK Holdings Bhd 's performance is expected to accelerate meaningfully in the coming quarters, driven by broad-based recovery and strong order pipelines across its core businesses. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research said OSK reported a core profit after tax and minority interests (patami) of RM125.4mil in the first quarter of financial year 2025 (1Q25). The research house noted that the results were within its expectation, making up 22% of its full-year forecast. On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, OSK's pre-tax profit was flattish at minus 0.6%. HLIB Research said the lower contribution from the property development segment attributed to lower profit margin from existing projects compared to 1Q24. 'The decline in industries was due to operating expenses tied to newly acquired factories in Johor Baru, which reported pre-tax profit of minus RM6.3mil. 'Excluding the losses, the segment would have recorded a pre-tax profit improvement of 18.6%, in tandem with the higher sales volume. 'Overall, core patami increased slightly by 2.1% due to lower taxes,' the research house said in a report yesterday. The group's capital financing division recorded 1Q25 pre-tax profit of RM30.9mil, which was up by 18.2% y-o-y. The positive performance was supported by the strong loan growth across all segments from conventional, civil servant and Australia. 'Loan portfolio continues to show robust momentum, growing sizeably to RM2.43bil as at March 31, 2025, which was up by 11.3% quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q). 'The q-o-q loan growth was supported by all segments: conventional (up 11.3%), civil servant financing ( up 4.8%), Australia (up 11.3%),' HLIB Research said. The research house said on the current trajectory, the capital financing segment is poised to deliver record-high earnings in financial year 2025 and is likely to emerge as a key earnings driver, on par with the group's property segment. Meanwhile, property sales were impacted in 1Q25 as both Chinese New Year and Hari Raya fell within the same period, resulting in fewer working days and temporary disruption in transaction activity. 'That said, momentum is expected to rebound, supported by a robust portfolio of ongoing projects and an active launch pipeline slated for the coming quarters,' HLIB Research said.
