Third graders and seniors bond through pen pal program in Andover

CBS Newsa day ago

For months, third graders at Crooked Lake Elementary have been trading letters with pen pals a few generations older. On Friday, they finally met face-to-face.
The pen pal program, organized by the school and Griswold Home Care, paired students with seniors living in nearby retirement communities. Since September, the two groups have been corresponding the old-fashioned way: one handwritten letter at a time.
"Having that connection piece between seniors and kids has been really rewarding," said Nicole Myhre, owner and director of Griswold Home Care. "Everybody is so excited to meet their pen pal today."
Students welcomed their senior pen pals with snacks, laughter and a tour of the school. The energy in the room was high.
"It was fun because he would tell me stuff that I didn't know before, and I would tell him stuff he didn't know before," said Brody, a third grader.
"My pen pal liked to talk about sports and holidays," said Howie, another student. "We just really liked talking to each other and getting to know each other."
For seniors, the letters offered a meaningful way to connect during a time in life when social ties can start to fade.
"When you're older, you don't have as many contacts," said Joanne Hansen. "So it's good to receive greetings from pen pals."
The kids enjoyed connecting too.
"It was really fun to learn about her story, and I just couldn't wait to meet her," said Eloise, a student. "And now it finally came!"
For some, the experience was like a recieving an exciting gift.
"It was like getting a Christmas present," said Reed, a third grader. "I've never had a pen pal before."
Teachers say the program also helped students improve their writing skills, practice reading cursive and learn to communicate thoughtfully.
Organizers hope the impact of the program lasts long after the school year ends.

Wanapum fire, near Beverly, burns about 370 acres

Jun. 9—BEVERLY — A wildland fire closed a portion of State Route 243 north of Beverly Burke Road for about four and a half hours Saturday near Wanapum Dam and the Wanapum Village. The fire was reported at about 5 p.m., according to a statement from the Washington Department of Transportation. The road reopened at about 9:30 p.m. The fire was estimated at about 372 acres and was listed as contained as of Monday morning. Eric Linn, Grant County Fire District 10 chief, said land along the highway near Wanapum Dam is owned by a number of different federal and state agencies, which scrambles the fire management picture. While the fire was in GCFD 10's coverage area, the Federal Bureau of Land Management was the lead agency, Linn said. The BLM spokesperson could not be reached by press time. Fire breaks out in parking structure of Nashville library and explosions are heard

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) — A fire broke out in the parking structure of Nashville's main public library early Tuesday and explosions were heard. Eli Gilmore, a Nashville musician who lives in the apartment building next door, said he heard loud explosions begin around 1:15 a.m. local time. 'We were sitting around and I just looked over and saw the black smoke coming out of the garage, and then we just started hearing cars exploding, one after another. We saw a floor crack and fall in. It's been shooting sparks across the street.' On a FaceTime call with The Associated Press, he showed video of the building with smoke pouring out of it and emergency vehicles surrounding it. He said at least 50 firefighters were visible on the scene. The city's fire department could not immediately be reached. ___ AP writer Ted Anthony in Pittsburgh contributed to this report.
