Edmunds: Five great budget performance cars for under $35,000

New car prices continue to rise for the latest high-performance sports cars. Even a new Chevrolet Corvette, long considered a performance bargain compared to the likes of the Porsche 911, has a starting price of almost $70,000. But that doesn't mean driving enthusiasts on a budget can't find a car that's both fulfilling to drive and genuinely capable.
The auto experts at Edmunds have come up with their five favorite performance vehicles for under $35,000. True, you won't be able to buy anything with a V8. The same applies to electric power — the best-value electric performers cost more. But the vehicles listed here have other distinct advantages. All of the following prices include destination fees.

There's some irony in the first vehicle in a list of budget-performance cars not being a car at all. But Dodge's Hornet isn't your usual small SUV. First off, it has an Italian heritage. Though you wouldn't know it by its styling, the Hornet shares much of its mechanical design with the Alfa Romeo Tonale small luxury SUV. Second, it's genuinely powerful for a pint-size SUV. The GT version has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that cranks out 268 horsepower and is good enough to get you from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds. Another bonus: It has standard all-wheel drive for all-season driving and more cargo space than the typical performance car.
2025 Hornet starting price: $31,590
Ford Mustang EcoBoost
A Ford Mustang GT with its rumbly V8 is well beyond our $35,000 price cap. But the less expensive Ford Mustang EcoBoost is a viable substitute. Having a turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood might seem like heresy, but you can't argue with the output of 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. With its 10-speed automatic spinning the rear wheels, the Mustang EcoBoost can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a quick 5.6 seconds. The newest Mustang provides a classic American driving experience while being comfortable, stylish and well equipped with the latest technology features.
2025 Mustang coupe starting price: $33,515
Mazda MX-5 Miata
You're as likely to see a Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster in the hands of a cool-headed retiree on lonesome canyon roads as you are spotting one ripping through cones at an autocross. In both cases, the Miata's appeal comes down to the fun-to-drive fundamentals. A four-cylinder engine directs 181 horsepower to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. That's not much, but you don't need much when the car is as light as the Miata. A manual-equipped Miata went from 0 to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds at the Edmunds test track. Beyond the numbers, the Miata is all about playfulness. Quick steering, nimble handling and an easy-to-lower top combine to make any drive worthwhile.
2025 MX-5 Miata starting price: $30,715
Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86
The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 are mechanically related. Both use a four-cylinder rated at 228 horsepower that sends its power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Edmunds found these cars can sprint to 60 mph in about 6 seconds when equipped with the manual. There's enough power to be entertaining but not enough to get a new driver in too much trouble, making these fantastic beginner's sports cars. And there's a low center of gravity and classic rear-wheel-drive balance to help drivers enjoyably learn about car control. But the Toyabaru twins don't stop being fun once you master them.
2025 Toyota GR86 starting price: $31,135; 2025 Subaru BRZ starting price: $32,380
Volkswagen GTI
The Volkswagen GTI is the quintessential budget performance hatchback. It's fun and engaging to drive yet practical and comfortable day to day. Few cars can do as many things as well as the GTI. Its turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 241 horsepower. For 2025, every GTI has a seven-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Edmunds has found it's good for a 5.9-second 0-60 mph sprint. Besides performance, the GTI has a spacious cabin and a generous cargo area for its size. The original hot hatch that traces its American lineage all the way back to 1983 is a solid performance value.

Edmunds says
Spending less than $35,000 can get you a fun vehicle to drive in 2025. Each model here has distinct advantages. You'll likely prefer the Hornet or Golf GTI if space and practicality are priorities. The Miata, BRZ and GR86 all provide a great feel and connection to the road; picking one of these comes down to whether you want a convertible top or the extra security of a coupe. The Mustang can't be beat for its classic pony car styling and heritage.

Stellantis insider Antonio Filosa named new CEO as automaker focuses on profit revival

Stellantis NV named its North American chief Antonio Filosa as its new chief executive on Wednesday, as it seeks to revive the performance and shares of the multinational automaker. Filosa, an Italian national replaces Carlos Tavares, who stepped down in December after a fall in profits and sales. He will officially be CEO from June 23, when he will also announce a new leadership team, the company said. The tasks are daunting as the global car industry seeks to navigate the chaotic trade war launched by U.S. President Donald Trump. For Filosa and Stellantis, the focus is on trying to revive profits in the major U.S. market. The company also needs to rationalize Stellantis' portfolio of 14 brands, which analysts say could mean axing some of them. The board's choice was unanimous and was based on Filosa's 'proven track record of hands-on success during his more than 25 years in the automotive industry,' the company said. Shares in the carmaker, the world's fourth largest by sales, whose brands include Chrysler, Peugeot and Jeep, were slightly higher in morning trade, a muted reaction for a much-anticipated appointment. Stellantis pausing Windsor production of 2026 electric Dodge Charger R/T over tariffs The Milan-listed shares have lost more than two-thirds of their value since early last year. Some investors said Filosa had relatively limited experience in North America and that an outsider would be better positioned to shake up the business. However, Fabio Caldato, a portfolio manager at AcomeA SGR, which holds Stellantis shares, said Filosa had the right profile, with his specific knowledge of the U.S. market, as well as of the local culture from a negotiating perspective. 'His operational rather than financial curriculum is further proof of Stellantis' quest to have a CEO prepared to handle both its business revival and its wider transition to electrification,' he said. Analysts at Italian broker Intermonte were more cautious, saying Filosa's appointment was not expected to have a strong impact, as his experience in North America was limited. Following Tavares' abrupt departure in December, the automaker has been provisionally led by its Chairman John Elkann, a scion of the Agnelli family that founded Fiat, now part of Stellantis. The Agnellis are Stellantis' single largest investor through their family holding company Exor. The group was created in early 2021 through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot's owner PSA, with Tavares, the former PSA head, as its first CEO. Filosa has been leading Stellantis in North America since October. In 2023 he was also appointed global head of Jeep, one of Stellantis leading brands, a role he quit this year when, as part of a wider management reshuffle, he was also given the additional role of Stellantis global chief for quality. Despite his Fiat background and Italian nationality, he has hardly worked in Italy and instead has the global profile the Stellantis board had sought to address issues at the multinational carmaker. His time as head of Stellantis' North American business can also prove an asset in dealing with Trump's administration and respond to its tariff policies.

Create Account Filosa, who is currently Stellantis' chief operating officer for the Americas and chief quality officer, takes the post effective June 23, when he is expected to announce his leadership team. The move returns the running of Stellantis, created from the 2021 merger of France's PSA Peugeot with Italian-US carmaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, to Italian hands after three years under Tavares, who previously served as Peugeot's top executive. John Elkann, heir to the Fiat-founding Agnelli family, remains chairman. Elkann praised Filosa's 'deep understanding of our company, including its people, who he views as our core strength, and of our industry.' Robert Peugeot said the board's choice was unanimous, calling Filosa a 'natural choice' due to his leadership track record and knowledge of the business and 'the complex dynamics facing our industry.' This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Filosa joined Fiat in 1999, spending much of his career in Latin America where held positions from plant manager to head of purchasing and later chief operating officer. He was credited with making the Fiat brand the regional market leader and boosting the market share of the Peugeot, Citroen, Ram and Jeep brands. He was promoted to chief operating officer of the Americas in 2024 in an executive shakeup as sales slumped in North America, its main source of profits. Stellantis has been lagging globally in the transition to electric powertrains and facing stiff Chinese competition. Analysts also have said Stellantis, with 14 brands, is yoked by too many under-performers, including Maserati and Chrysler. Read More Sunshine Girls Sunshine Girls Toronto Maple Leafs News Canada

Amazon's in-car software deal with Stellantis fizzles

Amazon's deal with Stellantis to create in-car software that the companies hoped would transform the driving experience while bolstering their vehicle-tech credentials is "winding down," the companies confirmed after a Reuters inquiry. The Stellantis SmartCockpit project, which would rely on Amazon's in-car technology, is the latest example of traditional automakers struggling to work with Silicon Valley to introduce more sophisticated vehicle software. Stellantis remains a valuable partner for Amazon, and the companies "continue to work together on a range of initiatives," they said in a statement, adding that the decision to end their joint work on SmartCockpit was mutual. The project between the Seattle tech giant and the maker of Jeeps, Peugeots and Alfa Romeos was hailed by the CEOs of both companies when it was announced in 2022. The two planned to develop features that would make the cars feel like an extension of home by detecting the driver and personalizing settings such as the thermostat, navigation and even home automation, like turning on lights. Stellantis had hoped Amazon's software expertise would help the global automaker in the race against companies like Tesla and China's BYD. And for Amazon it was meant to serve as a prototype for a wider rollout to more automakers. In a January 2022 press release, Stellantis's then-CEO Carlos Tavares said he hoped the partnership would help make the vehicles "the most wanted, most captivating place to be, even when not driving." Tavares left the automaker abruptly last year, and the company on Wednesday named its North American chief Antonio Filosa as its new chief executive. Stellantis has been trying to revive its slumping stock, which fell about 40 per cent in 2024, amid disappointing sales, especially in North America. Automotive software has emerged as one of the most important, and difficult, areas for legacy automakers to nail. Much of what modern cars do today is dictated by code, including the feel of the brakes, infotainment system, and advanced driving-assistance features such as automated steering for which automakers can charge subscription fees, unlocking significant revenue streams. Ford recently axed its next-generation electrical architecture due to ballooning costs around the technology. Reuters couldn't determine any singular reason the partnership on SmartCockpit ended. The companies said the shift "will allow each team to focus on solutions that provide value to our shared customers and better align with our evolving strategies." Relative newcomers, like Elon Musk's Tesla, built electrical and software systems that can quickly deliver new features or fixes to customers at a lower cost to the company. Traditional carmakers, including Volkswagen and General Motors, have struggled to master these systems on their own, and have been poaching talent from Silicon Valley or forming partnerships in an effort to reverse that trend. Unlike Tesla which has very little complexity across its smaller lineup of vehicles, Stellantis manages dozens of models across 14 brands and a maze of global suppliers, increasing the challenges around implementing new software. SmartCockpit was initially planned to arrive in vehicles in late 2024 to early 2025. It was a part of what Stellantis called its ABC platform, which included its electrical architecture, called STLA Brain, and Autodrive driver-assistance system. Under the agreement, Stellantis would pay Amazon for access to the software in each car, as well as other maintenance fees. As envisioned, Amazon would pay Stellantis incentive fees for things like drivers signing up for its music subscription service through the vehicles, two sources said. The automaker also partnered with Amazon to use the tech company's cloud business, called Amazon Web Services, to store and update data across its complex lineup. Stellantis will continue to rely on AWS, the companies said, and Alexa will also still be available in some Stellantis vehicles. Stellantis could potentially continue work on the SmartCockpit with another operating system as its base, such as Google's Android platform, people familiar with the matter said. Amazon hoped that the team's work, internally called Digital Cabin or Project Quatro would rival Google's Automotive Services, the standard Android-based operating system used by many automakers, one of the sources said.
