unmanned aerial vehicles
or 'pseudo-satellites' operating in the stratosphere for long durations for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, TOI reported.

"Capable of operating at an altitude of about 20km, which is much higher than the flightpaths of commercial planes, the HAPS aircraft will be used for persistent ISR as well as act as airborne data relay for other unmanned platforms for electronic and communications intelligence," an officer told TOI.
IAF has issued an initial request for information (RIF) for vendors to submit their responses by June 20 amid heightened tensions with Pakistan and a de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control with China.

HAPS aircraft are generally solar powered and are considered to be much cheaper to deploy and operate compared to satellites. "Capable of automatic take-off and landing, HAPS aircraft do not require launch vehicles or rockets like satellites. They can be deployed from different locations as well as repaired and maintained easily as compared to satellites," the officer said.
The IAF wants HAPS aircraft to have a minimum operational endurance of 48 hours with data links and telemetry range of at least 150 km in a "line of sight" environment while it is also seeking launch-on-demand satellites.

"The desirable Satcom (satellite communication) is at least 400 km," the RFI said.
The aircraft should come with a detection range of at least 50 km from operating altitude and must with electro-optical and infrared cameras as well as electronic and communication intelligence payloads. They should be capable of effectively operating even during night and low-visibility conditions.
"The complete delivery is expected to be completed in 18 months from the date of the contract," the RFI added.
The IAF is also pursuing a case for three ISTAR (intelligence, surveillance, targeting and reconnaissance) aircraft to provide accurate "actionable intelligence" acquired through synthetic aperture radars, electro-optical and infrared sensors.
Under the much-touted Defence Technology and Trade Initiative between India and the US, ISTAR platforms were among the different projects identified for co-development and co-production.

Counsellor arrested for duping Pune-based edu institute
Pune: The crime branch of the Pune police arrested Kunalkumar Vidyarthi, an education counsellor and a resident of Bihar, for publishing an online advertisement with the photograph of a Pune-based education institute, its webpage, and logo in an alleged admission fraud case. "Vidyarthi and his wife were in the process of boarding a flight to Thailand from Kolkata airport on May 31. We took him into custody following a tip-off and brought him to the city for further action," said senior inspector Ulhas Kadam from the crime branch's anti-narcotics cell. The police produced Vidyarthi before a magisterial court, which ordered his custodial remand till June 5. Kadam said the modus operandi of Vidyarthi involved issuing an online advertisement to lure students and promising to help them secure admission to various courses in exchange for money. When this came to the notice of the institute, its official registered an FIR relating to cheating against Vidyarthi and two others with the Deccan Gymkhana police on April 2, 2024. A police team conducted searches at suspected places in Maharashtra, Haryana and Delhi to trace Vidyarthi, but his whereabouts remained unknown as he constantly changed his hideouts to evade arrest. 'Traditional banks losing share to fintechs globally'
MUMBAI: Traditional banks are losing ground in the fast-evolving financial services space to agile, tech-driven rivals. Even as overall sector revenues grow, incumbents struggle to hold on to their share, according to Boston Consulting Group's latest Future of Finance report. "Financial services revenues are growing - but banks are not capturing their fair share," BCG says. The value, it notes, is shifting to fintechs, private credit funds, non-bank liquidity providers, and digital-native banks. "Maturing digital assets appear to be on pace to cause significant disruption, with most banks currently on the outside looking in." The fastest-growing players are also the most digitally savvy. Digital attacker banks clocked 85-100% CAGR in revenues over the past five years. Private credit players and retail trading platforms are close behind. Traditional banks, in contrast, posted only 10-15% CAGR, despite holding the largest share of balance-sheet assets. The challengers' edge stems from scalable platforms, lean cost structures, and a digital-first approach.
