Fishermen families expect more incentives from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister during his tour to Srikakulam district on April 26

The Hindu25-04-2025

Thousands of fishermen families have been eagerly waiting for the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's scheduled tour to Budagatlapalem of Etcherla mandal of Srikakulam district with a hope that he would announce many other incentives apart from launching Matsyakara Bharosa, a financial assistance scheme on Saturday (April 26, 2025). Hundreds of fishermen have been migrating to Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and other places in search of livelihood due to limited opportunities in Srikakulam which has 180 km long coast line from Pydibhimavaram to Ichchapuram, the border town of Andhra Pradesh.
With the skyrocketing cost of boats, nets and diesel rates, many families stopped the fishing activity. With the competition from mechanised boats, changes in the environment, many of them are not able to catch sufficient quantities of fishes even after spending three or four days in the sea. Around 50,000 families which completely depend on fishing activity face difficulties during the fishing holiday period which would be strictly implemented every year for nearly 45 days between April and June months.
The previous YSRCP government used to sanction ₹10,000 financial assistance under Matsyakara Bharosa. Now, it was enhanced to ₹20,000. Minister for Agriculture K. Atchannaidu said that around ₹258 crore would be credited to the accounts of eligible families under the scheme during the visit of the Chief Minister.
Several fishermen community leaders are expected to meet the Chief Minister and submit a representation on their grievances. A fishermen association leader Suryanarayana hoped that the government would provide alternative livelihood opportunities with the drop in fishing activity with the contamination of water as several pharmaceutical companies were letting polluted water directly into the sea in Pydibhimavaram and other places.

Former Andhra CM condemns arrest of journalist Kommineni

VIJAYAWADA: YSRCP president and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed concern over the breakdown of democracy, and rule of law in Andhra Pradesh, alleging that the State has now become a symbol of anarchy under the TDP-led NDA government. Taking to X on Monday, Jagan remarked that democratic voices, intellectuals, and journalists are being silenced through fear, intimidation, and blatant misuse of power. Jagan strongly condemned the arrest of senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao, calling it a peak act of political vendetta. He questioned the rationale behind the arrest of a moderator for remarks he never made, simply for hosting a debate. 'In any discussion, diverse views are natural. Punishing the anchor for guests' views is not only unjust but also dangerous,' he observed. He accused Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu of attempting to divert public attention from the failures of his one-year rule, which include corruption and betrayal of electoral promises. Jagan reminded Naidu that power is temporary. 'You were given five years. One year has already passed. The day will come soon when the people will demand answers for your misuse of power. What you sow today, will reap tomorrow,' he said.

AP Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu inspects Polavaram, says work on schedule

Andhra Pradesh Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu has assured that the construction of the Polavaram Project is proceeding as planned. During a recent inspection of the project, he observed that the diaphragm wall construction is advancing rapidly. Minister Ramanaidu addressed the media, highlighting that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has personally reviewed the project on three occasions. The government aims to complete the project by the end of 2027, with expectations that the buttress dam work will be finalised in time to allow continued progress during the rainy season. He noted that over 80 percent of the Polavaram head works have already been successfully completed. 'If the work is progressing swiftly, it is only false narratives being circulated,' Ramanaidu stated. He added that there have been claims from YSRCP ministers questioning their understanding of the project and its timeline. 'The Chief Minister is actively accelerating the project's progress, and we will not compromise on the quality of the Polavaram construction,' Ramanaidu affirmed.

Jagan condemns Journo's arrest, calls it ‘assault' on democracy

'Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is using fake narratives and organized violence to divert public anger and escape accountability,' said Reddy in a post on X, calling the actions a 'deliberate attack' on democratic institutions. The Andhra Pradesh police had on Monday arrested senior journalist in Hyderabad for allegedly making disparaging remarks against greenfield capital city Amaravati. Amaravati, June 10 (PTI) YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy condemned the arrest of senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao and attacks on a vernacular news channel, calling it an 'assault on democracy'. The former CM accused Naidu of 'distorting' facts, misusing power, and inciting orchestrated violence under the guise of safeguarding women's dignity. He claimed that 188 women were raped and 15 murdered within a year of TDP-led government coming to power, attributing it to police negligence and the government's failure to deliver justice. The YSRCP chief alleged that the NDA alliance reneged on its promises on education, health, agriculture, and security, pushing people into distress despite electoral assurances. 'Your (Naidu) diversion politics won't work forever, Chandrababu garu. People are watching, and they will hold you accountable,' Reddy said in the post. Meanwhile, there was no immediate reaction from the ruling TDP. PTI MS STH ROH This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.
