Buffalo Sabres extend their NHL-record postseason drought to 14 seasons

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres were officially eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoffs contention for the 14th straight season on Tuesday night.
The Sabres extended their playoff drought, which is the longest in NHL history and ties them with the NFL's New York Jets for the longest current run of seasons since qualifying for the postseason.

Buffalo initially set the record after the 2021-2022 season when they missed the postseason for the 11th straight time.
'We know where we're at,' Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. 'I'm disappointed where we're at and we can't do anything with that, but we can work on our game and we're going to continue to work on our game until it's over.'
Ruff is in his second stint as coach of the Sabres. He was hired in May when he replaced Don Granato. Ruff was the last person to coach Buffalo to the playoffs in 2011 before he was fired in 2013.
The Sabres beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 on Tuesday night to keep a shred of hope alive, but the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 win at home against the Detroit Red Wings left them 11 points behind with five games remaining.

'It's mixed emotions, for sure,' Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin said. 'I mean, (ticked) that we started to play good now. It's too late. But also, it's good we can see that we can play good hockey, and we can beat any team in this league.'
The Sabres were able to stave off elimination until their 77th game thanks to winning 10 of their last 13 games including five straight. However, a staggering 13-game losing streak in November and December in which they went 0-10-3 doomed the season.

(AP) — David Ayala scored in stoppage time to give the Timbers a 2-1 victory over St. Louis City on Sunday, extending Portland's unbeaten streak at home to eight games. Ayala's goal came in the second minute of second-half stoppage time off a corner kick. After a scoreless first half in temperatures that soared into the 90s Fahrenheit, Akil Watts scored in the 50th minute to put St. Louis City (3-8-6) ahead. Five minutes later, Antony fooled a defender and put his shot from atop the box into the upper far corner to pull the Timbers (7-4-6) even. It was Antony's team-leading sixth goal of the season. The match was City's second under David Critchley, who took over after the team fired Olof Mellberg. St. Louis beat the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 in Critchley's debut to end its 11-match regular-season winless streak. Pete Alonso closing in on Mets home run record
DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May. He went 5 for 14 during the weekend series and has raised his batting average from .288 to .301 over the last eight games. 'There's a lot to like about his bat right now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Just dominating pitches in the strike zone. That's who he is. We know that the power's always been there, but now we're looking at a really good hitter.' Alonso wasn't the only Mets player with a banner day. Juan Soto had three hits and walked three times to reach base in all six plate appearances. He became the first New York player to accomplish that feat since Alonso on Aug. 15, 2019, at Atlanta. 'It's not easy to do at the big league level,' Mendoza said. 'You get six times at the plate and you find a way to get on base. Finally getting results, but I feel the at-bat quality has been there.' Alonso's path toward becoming the Mets' career home run leader began when he set the major league record for rookies with 53 in 2019. He has hit at least 34 homers in each of his five full big league seasons and is on pace for 41 this year. 'Pete's been pretty incredible this year. He's been locked in every single at-bat,' said teammate Jeff McNeil, who also hit two home runs Sunday. 'Seems like big situations he's going to do some damage. 'It's fun to watch and I feel like he's putting on a show every time he's at the ballpark.' ___
