Suffolk sanctuary celebrates rescuing cats for 100 years

BBC Newsa day ago

From the outside, it looks like any other terraced house, but behind the front door the Ipswich & District Animal Welfare Centre has provided a sanctuary for countless cats for 100 years. At a time when many sanctuaries are struggling to stay afloat, how has it kept going for an entire century?
The Tardis-like house in the east of the town was opened for animals in 1925 by Margaret Payne. The site, which is run by the Animal Welfare Suffolk charity, boasts 18 state-of-the-art kennels and an outdoor area for feral felines, at times caring for as many as 35 cats or kittens. Since 2012, it has been operated by a family which had been heavily involved with it for decades before taking over.A key to its longevity is "the fact we've been on the same site for 100 years, with people who have been here for 30 to 40 years," said the charity's chief executive Nick Chaplin. "You can still come in and talk to people who remember your family and the cat you took from us 25 years ago, so it has a long historical link to people within the community," he said.
One of the dedicated volunteers and workers is centre manager Suzanne Tripp, who has been there for 28 years and said she treated every cat as if it were her own. She said animals were often handed into the facility in a "very poor condition" - a reoccurring sight that she said only spurred her on."We had a kitten in that had to have a leg amputated and we were told it had fallen off a sofa," she said."Well unless the sofa was on the roof then, no, it had been ill-treated."We would rather have the cats here than have people not care for them, so it's so satisfying to see them go out to new homes happy, fed and with glossy coats."
The rescue centre also features a charity shop, with bric-a-brac, board games, ornaments and more taking over the front room and the lengthy hallway. All of the money raised covers the cost of everything from a vaccination to a heating bill. It is an additional revenue stream at a time when independent animal sanctuaries across the UK are struggling to stay open.In February, for example, the BBC reported how the Friends of Felines animal charity was at risk of closure after racking up a vet bill for £7,000. The site in Halstead in Essex, which cares for cats from across the East of England, said bills had trebled over Christmas due to the number of elderly cats it took in, as well as those suffering from a viral disease.Back at the Ipswich centre, while the income from the shop helped, Mr Chaplin admitted it was far from enough."Every cat we look after costs about £1,000 before it is rehomed," he said."The whole place costs just over £100,000 a year, so we do need donations all the time. "We are quite fortunate that we have had people give us significant sums over the years; some years we will get £40,000 to £50,000, and other years we will get multiple hundreds of thousands."So, it does balance out, but that's over the years, not in any given year."
The sanctuary also puts on an in-house animal clinic once a week to ensure that all pet owners in the area, regardless of their financial situation, can access veterinary care or advice at a fraction of the market price. It has proven a priceless service for so many at a time when the cost of vet care is surging. According to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), for example, prices for vet treatments grew by 60% between 2015 and 2023, compared with the general inflation rate of 35% over the same period.Last month a BBC investigation found some vets felt they were under pressure to "generate income" and more money per pet.But could vet practices themselves being doing more to drive down the cost of care?Mr Chaplin is not so sure they could."I work with a lot of vets and I don't think they overcharge," he said."The costs of medication have gone up a huge amount and the amount they have to pay their staff has gone up. "I know from the ones that we work with they do their best."
To celebrate the sanctuary's 100th anniversary, a Spring Fair Birthday Party and open day will be held on Saturday at the centre on Cauldwell Hall Road, giving people the chance to see exactly what makes it so special. But what does it mean to Mr Chaplin?"An enormous amount," he said. "My parents were here for a long time and my mum loved the place. "I remember being here when I was 14 playing with the cats. I know how much good it does and how good a place it is."

Dani Dyer is married! TV personality stuns in an off-the-shoulder gown as she ties-the-knot with Jarrod Bowen during intimate ceremony

Dani Dyer and Jarrod Bowen married during an intimate ceremony surrounded by their closest friends and family on Saturday. The TV personality, 28, stunned in an elegant off-the-shoulder gown to tie-the-knot with the West Ham captain, also 28. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Days before the ceremony, Dani opened up about the touching role her dad Danny would play in her wedding to Jarrod. Her father, beloved EastEnders star Danny Dyer, 47, will walk her down the aisle - a moment Dani says will be 'filled with emotion'. Speaking on their joint podcast, Live and Let Dyers, Dani revealed she was keeping her wedding dress a surprise from her dad until the big day to honour a special tradition. 'Have you not seen that first look when the dad sees their daughter in their dress and that? Oh, it's lovely,' she shared. 'Yeah, your dad's not meant to see it – it's a moment for the dad as well!' Dani has had a whirlwind few months, filled with two lavish hen parties and all the excitement of getting ready for her big day. Speaking to Heat magazine earlier this week, Dani said: 'I have finally done my table plans now. Until you are in there writing names out, making sure you have tables of 10, it's the most stressful experience ever - that's the only thing I've not enjoyed.' Dani also revealed she will take on a double-barrell surname after the wedding, becoming Dyer-Bowen. She said: 'I am going to keep the Dyer - I am going to do Dani Dyer-Bowen just because of my work. I feel like if I am Dani Bowen, it takes that thing away from me. We are double-barrelling it.' The wedding will undoubtedly be an emotional day for Dani's father Danny Dyer, with the reality star saying he and West Ham star Jarrod are very close. 'We've joked so many times that Jarrod is marrying the wrong Dani Dyer!' she said. The mother-of-three added she has really enjoyed the build up to the big day, which included a recent hen night in Ibiza with her pals. Sparing no expense with her lavish nuptials, the bride-to-be shared a glimpse of her wild celebrations on Instagram, which included a boozy brunch, a boat trip and a raucous night in the lavish nightclub Ushuaia. A source told The Sun that Dani really splashed the cash during her hen celebrations, including a VIP night at Ushuaia that cost at least £8,000. The insider said: 'Dani might have flown on a commercial flight but they splashed the cash when they landed. 'She spent Friday night at Ushuaia where they were on a VIP table with a minimum spend of £8,000. The next day they hired a boat to go around the coast before spending the rest of the time chilling at the Hard Rock hotel. 'Dani also had a boozy brunch at Beso Beach where her mates put on Jarrod masks and sang ABBA songs with her. 'They spent their last night at super club Hï Ibiza where they had a VIP booth. There were some sore heads when they touched down at City airport.' Meanwhile, Jarrod jetted off to Las Vegas for his stag do as he prepared to marry the Love Island star.

Man Utd title winner didn't want to leave house after being mocked for his looks and got apology from Gary Lineker

LUKE CHADWICK has revealed he was left battling depression and anxiety after being mocked for his appearance. The former Manchester United midfielder was on the books at Old Trafford between 1997 and 2004. 3 3 3 Chadwick came through the United youth system, winning the Premier League in 2001. He would go to play for West Ham, Stoke and MK Dons in a near two-decade career. Ahead of releasing his autobiography Not Just a Pretty Face, the 44-year-old has opened up about abuse he suffered as a young pro. Chadwick admits cruel comments about his appearance made him want to hide away in his house in the early stages of his career. He told BBC Sport: "As a 19, 20-year-old it should have been the best time of my life but for a period of time. "I didn't want to go to the shops, I didn't want to go out with my friends. "I would just want to stay at home because I was so scared that people would talk about the way that I looked. "I wasn't able to speak about it to anyone – not even my family, my friends – it was something that I kept so deep inside. "I probably felt helpless, in a way, because I just didn't know how to deal with it. And I just wanted it to stop, really." Chadwick's anxiety improved after moving away from Old Trafford to join the Hammers in 2004. Ex-Man Utd player Luke Chadwick claims his 'stomach twisted' whenever he appeared on TV as he battled depression He continued: "It wasn't until I came away from Manchester United, and the spotlight's not on you as much. "I was able to rebuild my confidence and live a really happy life. "Football was always the place I felt free - the place where I didn't think about anything else." Chadwick also received an apology from Gary Lineker for comments made on the BBC show They Think It's All Over. Lineker was a team captain on the panel show, which regularly poked fun at Chadwick over his looks. The England legend wrote on X in 2020: "I was part of that show, therefore, I too would like to apologise to Luke Chadwick for any hurt caused."
