Free entry parks

Anyone aged over 14 rides free at Southend Adventure Island when accompanying a paying guest under 120cm
While most theme parks now charge for entry at the gate, there are still a few dotted around the country that let visitors in free, with wristbands or tokens to pay for the rides.
That means if you're going with grandparents who don't want to go on many attractions, they can have a wander and spend time with their family without having to pay for the privilege.
Our favourite is Wicksteed Park in Kettering, which is open access to all.

You pay for parking and rides, but there are playgrounds around the site and lovely nature walks that don't cost a penny.
Another great free-entry option is Southend Adventure Island, where anyone aged over 14 rides free when accompanying a paying guest under 120cm.
Bring your own grub

Pull together a bargain picnic and take it with you to save some cash
With ice creams costing around £3 or £4 each nowadays, eating and drinking on your day out can soon add up, especially if you've got a horde of hungry boys like me.
I'd rather chuck together a homemade picnic and take it with us to save some cash. Then I don't mind splashing out for treats during the day.

I also don't want to waste time queuing at food stalls, so bringing our own lunch means more time on rides as we can eat wherever and whenever we want.

I usually manage to spend less than a tenner to feed us all, including sandwiches, crisps, fruit and sweets.
We bring refillable water bottles too so that we can keep hydrated without having to buy fizzy drinks.
I've even been known to keep a flask full of hot water in the car so I can get everyone fed before we head home if we've got a bit of a journey.
It's easy to warm up a few hot dog sausages and pop them in a bun, just don't forget the ketchup!

Little theme parks, lower fees

Smaller parks tend to have fewer rides but also lower fees, so they can be perfect if you're out and about with little ones who aren't fussed about going upside down or getting soaked on a log flume.
We always have a great time at Gulliver's, which has sites in Milton Keynes, Matlock Bath, Warrington and Rotherham, and often has tickets for £15 each.
We've also got a couple of smaller parks aimed at primary-aged children near us, including Wheelgates in Nottinghamshire and Twinlakes in South Leicestershire, which are on my list to check out with my littlest boy this summer as tickets are only £17 each.

If you're going to the big-name parks like Alton Towers, you can save if you book car parking in advance as it's usually cheaper than on the day.
It's also worth taking a look at an overnight stay to see if the perks add up for you.
We visited Legoland at the end of the school holidays one summer as we had an extra inset day when everyone else had headed back to school.

Booking last minute, our overnight stay in the Legoland Hotel, which included parking, breakfast, Lego toys in the room, use of the indoor pool, evening entertainment and early access to the park through a dedicated hotel entrance closer to the rides, was £149 for four of us.

Don't pay on-the-gate prices

It's worth taking time to research the best deal for your party, depending on who is coming along.
We used to love toddler and adult deals, which often keep costs low if you're visiting midweek with a little one.

Some places like Alton Towers and Warwick Castle even run this deal up to the age of five, so it's worth checking.
There's loads of other ways to save too, whether it's grabbing a free pair of Sun Club tickets, getting discount codes from packs of groceries, converting Tesco Clubcard points into days out vouchers or using membership schemes like Kids Pass or Blue Light Card.
I don't think I've ever paid the full price for a theme park day out as there's so many early accessible discounts around.
Do a bit of research and you could end up saving hundreds of pounds if you find the right deal for your family.

Dreamland in Margate is one of the UK's oldest theme parks, dating back to the 1880s. Yet it reopened in 2015 after a huge £25million renovations which has seen a number of new rides and attractions. And one of the newest rides opening this year is the Log Flume. The theme park once had the water ride more than 25 years ago, only to close the ride and sell it off. However, it is set to reopen at the theme park. The park's operation manager Jack King said: "Anyone that works in the attractions industry or is an avid fan of all things Theme Park will appreciate the dying breed that is a UK based classic Log Flume. "It is with absolute pride to see the installation of our new classic Reverchon Log Flume. "It is so exciting to actually say Dreamland Margate will be opening its first Log Flume in about 25 years." An official opening date for the ride is yet to be confirmed. In the mean time, you can also ride the Scenic Railway, one of the oldest wooden rollercoasters in the UK. The tiny UK theme park reopening next month which has seaside views and the oldest rollercoaster in the country The Big Wheel, Pirate Ship, Dodgems and Rock 'N' Roller roller coaster are some other rides at the park. Inside there is a huge roller rick and arcade as well. And the theme park also runs a number of live music events, with big name acts this year include Haim, Tom Jones, McFly, Dizzee Rascal and Billy Ocean. The theme park is free to visit, although they introduced new rider wristbands this year. The £24.99 all-day wristbands give guests unlimited access to the rides. Some even said Dreamland once rivalled Disneyland. Chris Britcher, who grew up in Kent, told local media: "The early eighties was a time when the ultimate holiday seemed to be a mortgage-busting ticket to Florida and the Disney parks. "But to me, as enticing as some of the rides across the pond seemed, Disney's saccharine brand was enough to make Dreamland, the theme park formerly known, temporarily, as Bembom Brothers, appear to have their beating at every level. Major update in Liam Payne death investigation with trial date set
Two men accused of supplying drugs to former One Direction singer Liam Payne just hours before his fatal fall from a hotel balcony will face trial, Argentinian prosecutors have confirmed. Braian Nahuel Paiz, 25, a restaurant waiter, and Ezequiel David Pereyra, 24, a former hotel employee, have been in custody since early January. They stand accused of selling cocaine to the British musician, who died on October 16, 2024, after falling from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. The Little Things hitmaker was a beloved UK musician after rising to fame alongside his former bandmates Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles on The X Factor in 2010. In a statement released by Argentina's public prosecution service, Prosecutor Andrés Esteban Madrea confirmed the pair would go to trial, facing potential prison sentences of up to 15 years if convicted of drug trafficking offenses. 'Braian Nahuel Paiz, who met Payne while working as a waiter in Puerto Madero, and Ezequiel David Pereyra, a former employee at the hotel where the incident occurred, are charged with the crime of selling drugs,' the statement read. Forensic investigations revealed Payne had consumed cocaine through both snorting and smoking shortly before his death. An autopsy showed he died from severe polytrauma and internal and external bleeding, and toxicology reports detected a combination of substances in his system, including cocaine, alcohol (at 2.7 grams per litre), methylecgonine, benzoylecgonine, cocaethylene, and the antidepressant sertraline. 'The toxicological analysis confirmed Liam Payne had ingested cocaine at least 72 hours before his death and possibly as recently as a few minutes before falling from the hotel balcony,' authorities said. Three other individuals initially charged in connection with Payne's death – his close friend Rogelio Nores, hotel receptionist Esteban Grassi, and head of hotel security Gilda Martin – were cleared of wrongdoing after an appeal overturned a lower court's manslaughter accusations. No date has been set for the trial of Paiz and Pereyra, but proceedings are expected to begin soon. The young waiter described himself as a longtime marijuana user and expressed regret over the connection he formed with Payne. The 54-year-old could be set to star on a new factual series about maths, created by her father Johnny Ball, according The Sun. The new show would tell the story behind 'the history of maths' and is based on the first six chapters of his book - Wonders Beyond Numbers. Zoe and Johnny Ball would team up to host the show along with Zoe's son Woody Cook. Johnny Ball, speaking to The Sun, said: 'The material can be honed down to the essentials, so that anyone could present it in a light and transparent way. 'This is why I believe myself, Zoe and my grandson Woody could add all what each age group requires to make it a fascinating and revealing series.' A channel for this untitled show is yet to be decided, with Johnny hoping to convince TV bosses to commission the series, admitting having Zoe on board is a 'big pull'. Zoe and son Woody have appeared on Celebrity Gogglebox before, but this would be the first time three generations of Ball have appeared on air together.
