The Indian Association of Tour Operators ( IATO ) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi , urging immediate intervention to revive inbound tourism by allocating a INR 1,000 crore budget under the Incredible India campaign and forming a central ' India Tourism Board ' under the Prime Minister's leadership. The move comes in light of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India remaining below 2019 levels during the last financial year.Based on internal assessments and consultations with inbound tourism stakeholders, IATO has concluded that India continues to underperform despite its natural and cultural appeal. The letter highlights the urgency of action, pointing out that the upcoming season offers a narrow window to reverse this trend.Ravi Gosain, President of IATO, said, 'When global trade is facing unprecedented disruptions due to tariff wars and geopolitical shifts, tourism exports remain unaffected by such constraints. Unlike goods, India's tourism export (i.e. foreign tourists spending in India), which is non-tariff based, brings direct foreign exchange earnings into the country. This positions inbound tourism as a stable, sustainable, and immediate contributor to India's current account with valuable foreign exchange, employment generation and balances forex trade deficit. Yet, regretfully the country is lagging in its effort to attract foreign tourists.'He further added that inbound tourism has strong soft power implications. 'Considering every foreign visitor to India becomes an ambassador of Indian culture, heritage, values and the immense multiplier impact it has in terms of employment generator and net revenue it earns, we still have not valued it as much as we should have. This sector alone has the potential to contribute 1–2 percent to the GDP and therefore this engine needs to fire,' Gosain stated.'To enhance FTA numbers besides the steps suggested above. We need simplified Visa facilitation , expanding the scope of e-Visas, fast-tracking group tourist visas and exploring Visa fees waivers for select countries. Further we need to incentivise international airlines and air charters to improve air connectivity to key tourism circuits, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 destinations,' he concluded.

Vacation rush to tourist hot spots in south India

Kolkata: As temperatures soar across India, tourists are increasingly turning to hill stations in south India for their summer getaways. Popular destinations like Munnar, Ooty and Kodaikanal have emerged as popular destinations for holidayers from Kolkata. Also in demand are Wayanad and Thekkady in Kerala; Yercaud in Tamil Nadu; Coorg, Chikkamagaluru and Nandi Hills in Karnataka; and Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh. Several of these destinations combine colonial charm with natural beauty, featuring tea plantations, scenic lakes, and pleasant weather throughout the summer months. "Hill stations like Ooty and Kodaikanal witnessed consistent footfall, with tickets being booked well in advance," said Indian Association of Tour Operators chairman (West Bengal) Debjit Dutta. The accessibility and well-developed infrastructure of these destinations make them particularly attractive to families and group travelers. Kerala's hill stations are gaining prominence among tourists seeking less crowded alternatives. Wayanad, with its lush forests and wildlife sanctuaries, has emerged as a favourite among nature enthusiasts. "Although not promoted as extensively as other destinations, Kerala's hill stations offer exceptional natural beauty," said Travel Agent Association of India chairman (east) Anjani Dhanuka. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "There has also been a rise in footfall in forests like Jim Corbett and Ranthambore. Goa remains an all-time favourite among travellers for all seasons. Gujarat saw a spike in tourism as the IPL final was held there," informed Travel Agents Federation of India managing committee member Anil Punjabi. Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Sikkim that are usually popular summer destinations have seen footfall plummet due to the terror strike at Pahalgam and landslide in Sikkim. Many are avoiding Uttarakhand because places here are also prone to landslides. Darjeeling closer home continues to be a top draw. But the Western Ghats region has seen increased interest from travellers looking for peaceful getaways that offer trekking, wildlife spotting, and other cultural experiences, said Paperboat Holidays director Arunodoy Dey.

Centre nudges Indian carriers to invest in crisis-hit Air Mauritius amid strategic push in Indian Ocean

The Centre has asked carriers to consider a strategic investment in Air Mauritius , the financially strapped national carrier of the African island nation, people aware of the development said. The nudge from the government comes as that airline battles a financial crisis , with a negative equity of $237 million (Rs 2,035 crore). A government official said the move came after the ministry of external affairs got a request from the Mauritian government for a potential strategic investment. It also asked for an increase in flights by Indian carriers to its capital, Port Louis, the person said. 'To cut losses, Air Mauritius has restructured its network, as part of which it significantly cut flights to India,' the official said. 'Indian carriers have been asked to launch more flights to cover the shortfall. The airline is also seeking to raise funding by selling equity, so Indian airlines are being requested to consider that, (but) only if it suits their business interest.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like เทรดทองCFDsกับโบรกเกอร์ที่เชื่อถือได้| เปิดบัญชีวันนี้ IC Markets สมัคร Undo Airport Holdings (AHL), controlled by the Government of Mauritius, has a 99% stake in the airline. AHL recently converted Rs 1,500 crore of debt into equity as part of the carrier's financial restructuring. Earlier this year, Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam said the carrier was technically insolvent, casting doubt over its future. The airline, which earlier operated two weekly flights between Port Louis and Delhi, had considered axing them but then decided to reduce it to one a week, while increasing fares significantly. Spokespersons of the ministry of civil aviation and Air Mauritius didn't respond to queries on the topic. Live Events Indian airline executives said they are unlikely to be interested in investing in a market that's not a significant source of passengers for them. Besides, they are in the midst of executing their own ambitious expansion plans. WHY IT MATTERS Prime Minister Narendra Modi was chief guest at Mauritius' National Day celebrations earlier this year. During his visit, Ramgoolam asked Indian investors to explore opportunities in the island nation, underlining that their participation is 'vital' for its economic growth. Last year, India built an airstrip and a jetty at Agaléga island in that country. Air India held about 8% of Air Mauritius before the former was privatised in 2022. Experts said Mauritius is of strategic interest to India due to its location on the maritime routes of the Western Indian Ocean Region (WIOR). Geopolitical competition over the region has intensified. China has a military base in Djibouti and extended its engagement with and presence in Mauritius and other island nations, according to Samir Bhattacharya, associate fellow at Observer Research Foundation. 'Given its diplomatic, cultural and commercial connections in the region, India considers the WIOR a part of its extended neighbourhood,' he wrote recently. 'Despite geographically being part of Africa, New Delhi categorises both Mauritius and the Seychelles under the Indian Ocean Region division, alongside more proximate states such as Sri Lanka and the Maldives. India is therefore keen to safeguard its influence against Beijing in this region.' While Mauritius is geographically well positioned to attract transit traffic between Africa and Asia, a fast-growing market, competition has surged. That's made it difficult for Air Mauritius to succeed at developing a new east-west hub while maintaining profitability. Since Air India absorbed Vistara last November, the airline has increased flights, managing to win a portion of the traffic from Air Mauritius while IndiGo continues to capture a significant share of that market. Additionally, Middle East carriers such as Emirates have a strong presence on the route.

Kashmir rail link to boost economy, tourism: Bizmen

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the much-awaited 272km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, built at a cost of ₹43,780 crore, on the eve of Eid on Friday, he will be opening all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country that would be a gamechanger for the Valley's economy, particularly tourism and horticulture. The rail link project, which includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119km) and 943 bridges, is set to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration besides generating jobs for local residents. The Jammu and Kashmir administration termed it a milestone as Indian Railways will be connected up to Baramulla, the last town in J&K. 'This link besides ferrying passengers will be used to transport apples, cherries, saffron and handicrafts to major markets in the country. It will also give a fillip to tourism as there will be improved access to destinations, including Pahalgam and Gulmarg. It will definitely be a gamechanger,' a senior J&K government official said. The horticulture sector forms 8% of Jammu and Kashmir's GDP. Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the Vande Bharat train, connecting Srinagar to the national capital from Katra in Jammu. Earlier, the inauguration was scheduled for April 19, but it was postponed due to inclement weather followed by the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 and Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries former president Sheikh Ashiq said: 'Finally, Srinagar has been connected by rail. It will help people of Kashmir in many ways, particularly those related to tourism, horticulture, handicrafts and other businesses.' Another businessman, Omar Tibetbakal, said the rail link will help all sectors of Kashmir. 'Now there should be a direct train between Srinagar and Delhi,' he said. Earlier, the train used to run between Baramulla in Kashmir and Sangaldan in Jammu province. Now with all the tunnels and stretches complete, the rail will run between Srinagar and other parts of the country. Gazi Latief, a tourist guide from Budgam, termed it a big moment that will boost tourism, while Malik Adil, a Srinagar-based wholesale fruit trader, said: 'We will now be able to ferry fruit consignments by rail that will save time. This is a big gift to fruit growers.' The Vande Bharat train will pass through picturesque destinations and the world's highest railway arch bridge on the Chenab. The train will complete its journey from Delhi to Srinagar in 13 hours. It will stop at six places and will be the first train between Delhi and Srinagar. However, officials say there will be a change of trains at Katra.
