Jagdish Bhola, convict in Rs 700cr drug racket, walks out of prison after 12 years
Bathinda: Twelve years after he was arrested in a multi-crore drug racket, Arjuna Award-winning wrestler and former Punjab Police DSP Jagdish Bhola finally walked out of jail on Sunday.
A bench of the Punjab and Haryana high court had granted him bail on May 21, with various conditions, including a bail bond of Rs 5 lakh and two sureties.
Bhola had won a silver medal in the Asian Wrestling Championship in 1991 and appeared in the Punjabi movie Rustam-e-Hind in 2008. A deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Bhola was dismissed from Punjab Police in 2012. He was arrested in Nov 2013 in connection with a Rs 700-crore drug racket.
Bhola was in jail for nearly 12 years. He has been convicted twice — in 2019 and 2024.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) named him an accused in the multi-crore synthetic narcotics racket after an investigation into money laundering was initiated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in 2013.
In Feb 2019, Bhola was convicted and sentenced to 24 years in jail by a special CBI court in Mohali in the Rs 700-crore drug racket busted Punjab Police in 2013.

Earlier, the disgraced cop and wrestler was allowed to visit his native village, Raike Kalan in Bathinda district, for five hours to perform the last rites of his father, Balshinder Singh, on Jul 26, 2024. Before this, he had come out to perform the last rites of his mother for a brief period in Jun 2023.

Police nab four men for selling IPL tickets illegally
Ahmedabad: City police on Tuesday arrested four men in two separate cases allegedly for selling IPL 2025 final match tickets illegally. The arrests were made by the crime branch and Gujarat University (GU) police during routine patrols. In the first incident, crime branch constable Vishwaraj Singh reported that around 10.50pm on Tuesday, police received information about a man selling IPL final tickets at inflated prices near Gate No. 1 of Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera. Acting on the tip-off, police detained a suspect matching the description — a man wearing a muddy-coloured T-shirt and grey pants. The individual was identified as Shubhankar Nilesh Shilkar, 22, a resident of Usgao village in Ponda, Goa. Upon searching him, police recovered three tickets for the match, each with a printed price of Rs 1,500. "Shilkar admitted that he purchased the tickets online and was attempting to sell them for Rs 5,000 each. A case of illegal selling of tickets was registered against him, and the tickets were seized. In the second case, Gujarat University police received a tip-off around 9pm on Tuesday about three youths selling match tickets illegally near the LD Engineering BRTS bus stop. Cops reached the spot and detained three individuals: Adityasinh Chauhan (19), Tushar Chauhan (18), and Sahil Shah (19), all students residing in different areas of the city. A search of the suspects revealed that Sahil Shah was carrying six IPL final tickets, each priced at Rs 1,500. According to cops, the group admitted that they booked the tickets online and intended to sell them for Rs 5,000 each, sharing any profit equally. Like in the earlier case, they were unable to provide any legal authorisation for resale. Gujarat University police registered an FIR under the same charges and seized the tickets.

Israeli soldiers bar media from visiting West Bank villages on tour organized by Oscar winners
JERUSALEM: Israeli soldiers on Monday barred journalists from entering villages in the West Bank on a planned tour organized by the directors of the Oscar-winning movie 'No Other Land.' The directors of the film, which focuses on Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied territory, said they had invited the journalists on the tour Monday to interview residents about increasing settler violence in the area. In video posted on X by the film's co-director, Yuval Abraham, an Israeli soldier tells a group of international journalists there is 'no passage' in the area because of a military order. Basel Adra, a Palestinian co-director of the film who lives in the area, said the military then blocked the journalists from entering two Palestinian villages they had hoped to visit. Israel's military said in a statement that entry into Khallet A-Daba, was banned because it was in a live-fire training zone. Tuwani, is not in the firing zone, but the military said it had barred 'individuals who might disrupt order from entering the area,' in order to 'maintain public order and prevent friction.' 'They don't want the world to see what is happening here' 'They don't want journalists to visit the villages to meet the residents,' said Adra, who had invited the journalists to his home. 'It's clear they don't want the world to see what is happening here.' Some of the surrounding area, including a collection of small Bedouin villages known as Masafer Yatta, was declared by the military to be a live-fire training zone in the 1980s. Some 1,000 Palestinians have remained there despite being ordered out, and journalists, human rights activists and diplomats have visited the villages in the past. Palestinian residents in the area have reported increasing settler violence since Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel and kickstarted the war in the Gaza Strip. Israeli soldiers regularly move in to demolish homes, tents, water tanks and olive orchards — and Palestinians fear outright expulsion could come at any time.

Delhi Police busts sextortion, cyberfraud rackets, 6 held
New Delhi, Jun 3 (PTI) The Delhi Police has busted a sextortion and cyber fraud racket, spanning across multiple states, and have arrested six people in the case, officials said on Tuesday. According to the police, a money trail of over Rs 5 crore has been identified by different teams of Crime Branch. 'On May 24, a tip-off was received regarding the movement of a consignment suspected to contain synthetic bank account kits in New Ashok Nagar area. These kits were reportedly being used in various high-tech crimes such as sextortion, cyber fraud, banking scams, debit/credit card cloning, etc," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Aditya Gautam said. It was found that the kits were to be delivered and distributed near the Mayur Vihar Phase-1 Extension. A team was formed and an operation was carried out, following which three people, who were in possession of the consignment, were arrested, the DCP said. 'The accused were identified as Ujjawal Pandey (30), Gaurav Barua (24) and Yug Sharma (19). Synthetic bank account kits, pre-activated SIM cards, forged bank documents, debit/credit cards linked to dummy or fraudulent accounts, and mobile devices for real-time transaction control were recovered from them," the DCP said. These items collectively formed called synthetic financial identity allowing cybercriminals to operate untraceable, modular shadow banking systems. Later, a raid was conducted at their instance at an illegal call centre involved in fraudulent bank loan schemes which was functioning in Mundka and seven people were apprehendedm, the DCP added. Among the apprehended individuals, Dilshad Ali emerged as a key operative. Investigations revealed that Ali, along with his associate Amit, was running a fake call centre providing bank loans. Ali acted as the team leader, while Amit, who is absconding, was identified as the owner of the operation. Amit's role involved the procurement and facilitation of fraudulent bank accounts and fake SIM cards, which were further handed over to Ali for use in the scam. The modus operandi of the call centre was to defraud people by offering fake bank loans. Initially, the callers under Ali's direction contacted potential victims offering them attractive loan deals. After gaining the victim's trust, the caller would request identification and other personal documents. The victim was then asked to make a payment through a QR code scanner, under the pretext of file processing fees, said the DCP. After the payment was received, the victim's follow-up messages and calls were ignored. The fraudsters would then switch off their mobile devices and change their contact numbers, effectively cutting off all communication. During investigation, another raid conducted in the New Ashok Nagar area where four other accused were apprehended and an organised sextortion racket was busted, DCP Gautam said. They would send friend requests on social media and obtain victim's mobile number. Later, they would initiate a video call, during which they would stream obscene videos, secretly recording the victim's screen and reactions using screen recording tools. The recorded content was then used to blackmail the victim under threats of publicly circulating the video on social media platforms, thereby coercing them into transferring money, the DCP said.
