Why Apple can make iPhones only in China, and what Canada can learn from that

Why can't Apple AAPL-Q make iPhones in the United States, or Canada for that matter? It's a relevant question following the recent demand from U.S. President Donald Trump that Apple iPhones sold in the U.S. be made in U.S., or face a 25-per-cent tariff.
The answer, that Apple can only produce its iPhones in China, and why, is a guiding truth that should inform the federal government's Throne Speech promise to 'embark on the largest transformation of its economy since the Second World War.'
That truth is made plain in the remarkable book Apple in China, written by Canadian-born business journalist Patrick McGee. It reveals in disturbing detail the 'Chinafication' of high-tech manufacturing founded on Apple know-how, billions in direct investment from Apple over the last quarter-century and Beijing's belief that 'Without a strong manufacturing industry, there will be no country and no nation.'
The result is a low-cost manufacturing sector underwritten by the power of an authoritarian state that delivers a sophisticated and expanding managerial and engineering class atop a scalable, just-in-time, low-wage, low-skilled, low-rights, 300 million-plus floating work force that moves as needed from factory to factory that could not (and should not) be reproduced anywhere else in the world.

As Mr. McGee observed in a U.S. podcast on his book, not only do Americans not want these factory jobs, neither do the Chinese people. These jobs are sustained by the policies of Beijing's Communist leadership that lets Apple exploit the desperation of millions of people from rural China as a means of exploiting Apple itself.
In 1999 Apple didn't produce its products in China. A decade later it was making almost everything there. Since 2008 Apple has trained 28 million people in China. 'This rapid consolidation,' said Mr. McGee, 'reflects a transfer of technology and know-how so consequential as to constitute a geopolitical event, like the fall of the Berlin Wall.'
Apple seeded China's production capacity through astonishing investments – reaching US$55-billion annually by 2015. This supplied the capital and expertise needed to train managers and engineers to establish and run factories and complex tooling companies while encouraging raw material extraction and refining essential to feeding the just-in-time high-tech supply chain Apple products rely on to generate $US90 billion-plus in annual profits.
By Mr. McGee's calculations, that US$55-billion a year is double what was invested through the U.S. Marshall Plan in today's dollars after the Second World War to rebuild 16 European countries.
What we learn from Mr. McGee's research is that Apple's iPhone and other products are possible because of a unique mix of management expertise delivered across multiple industries wedded to the availability of millions of low-skill, exploitable workers.
What we also learn, which is pertinent to Canada, is how management education can play a key role in transforming an economy.
One reason we can't get things done in Canada – improve productivity, take full advantage of the intellectual property we create, retain our promising start-ups, attract foreign direct investment, build infrastructure on time and near budget – is that Canadians are not great managers, especially in the small and medium-sized business sectors.
It is a hard truth. Perhaps Canadians know this subconsciously and it is why many in the last federal election took comfort electing a prime minister with a reputation as an outstanding manager.
The 'quality of management at Canada's manufacturing firms is … well behind the United States,' according to the OECD. The OECD goes on to say that 'managers in Canada tend to have comparatively lower levels of formal education than in other countries, which may mean shortfalls in competencies, such as strategic planning, financial management, and human resources management.'
Canada produces large swaths of university and college graduates in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and the arts. Most graduate without ever taking a course in financial or business management.
If Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal government truly wants to transform the Canadian economy, part of that long-term process must include working with businesses to invest heavily in management training while requiring the inclusion of business training in STEM and arts programs offered by colleges and universities.
The U.S., through Apple, could teach engineers and managers in China how to create and lead the businesses needed to make an iPhone even if they couldn't produce it in the United States.
If Apple was a Canadian company, it would have been sold or insolvent long ago.

At the stroke of midnight Thursday, after hours of waiting, diehard Nintendo fans rushed into an EB Games store on Yonge Street in the heart of downtown Toronto to get their hands on the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2. They cheered as confetti rained down and staff cut a big red ribbon to mark the arrival of Nintendo's first game system launch in eight years. And with it comes the release of Mario Kart World, the latest iteration in the company's flagship game series. The game system retails for $629, or $699 if you get it bundled with the new game. Nintendo Canada general manager Susan Pennefather says there has been a "tremendous outpouring of love and appreciation" from Switch fans, who either signed up to pre-order the console or waited dutifully in lines across the country for the 12 a.m. ET release. Pennefather spoke with CBC News outside the EB Games store in Toronto. The Japanese company, which has been producing home video game systems since 1985, will do its best to keep up with customer demand, she says. For those who didn't pre-order, plenty of units have been shipped to Canadian retail stores, she said. "Nintendo always looks at what the best consumer experience is going to be and they build their systems and their games around that." Lucas, who is the host and creator of The Electric Playground YouTube channel, says the company did indeed listen to what its customers wanted and built on what they loved about the original Switch. "The Switch 1 really just knocked our socks off with its hybrid functionality. You could take it out anywhere you wanted to go and play these massive AAA games like The Legend of Zelda on planes or trains or wherever," he said. Aside from battery power, he says Nintendo also revamped the overall design so that the controller now attaches magnetically rather than having to slide into rails on the side of the device. "It's a lot more refined," he said. "The Switch 2 is a much more premium-feeling, much more powerful new console from Nintendo." It's been a long time since the company's stores have had midnight openings for a launch like this, he said. Of its locations, 133 opened after-hours for the Switch 2 release. "The energy out there is unbelievable," he said at the Yonge Street store in Toronto Wednesday night. That excitement was on display across Canada — and around the globe. On the other side of the country in Vancouver, where there is a time zone advantage and the Switch 2 went on sale at 9 p.m. PT on Wednesday, lineups began as early as 7 a.m. "The hype for it is just through the roof, honestly," said Isaac Stanowich, who was third in line outside a GameStop store when he spoke to CBC News that afternoon. In Japan, the new consoles were sold through a competitive lottery system that Nintendo said got about 2.2 million applications. Outside the official draw, some retailers offered their own lotteries to pre-order the devices. In the U.S., Nintendo is capitalizing on the launch with the opening of a store in San Francisco and a Super Nintendo World amusement facility in Orlando, Fla., both of which opened last month. The Switch 2's U.S. rollout arrived at an uncertain time for much of the gaming industry due to new tariffs implemented by U.S. President Donald Trump. U.S. pre-orders for the Switch 2 were delayed for several weeks so the company could assess the potential impact of tariffs. Fortunately for gamers, the release date fell in the midst of a 90-day pause that Trump implemented last month. The Switch 2 release was announced on April 2, the same day Trump imposed his blanket tariffs on all U.S. imports, including a 24 per cent penalty on products imported from Japan and 46 per cent on products from Vietnam, where a large portion of U.S.-bound Switch consoles are manufactured.

The project is in collaboration with Qualico Properties and MacLab Development Group and will help to ensure students have access to housing that is affordable, said a statement from the university. 'Improving housing accessibility and affordability takes a creative approach to address the pressures our students are experiencing,' said Annette Trimbee, president and vice-chancellor at MacEwan University. The off-campus housing pilot program will begin in summer 2025, offering students discounts on select downtown rentals that are close to campus. Students who are interested in accessing the housing initiative can do so by contacting select property owners to learn what units and lease terms are available. A lease on an eligible unit must be signed before Sept. 1, 2025, to qualify for the discount. Participating properties with available units are The Switch at 10465 101 Street and The Parks at 10135 108 Street.

THE CANADIAN PRESS/AP-Michael Dwyer HALIFAX — In response to Prime Minister Mark Carney's bid to make Canada an 'energy superpower,' Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston is floating the idea of dramatically ramping up the province's nascent offshore wind energy industry. In an online video released earlier this week, Houston says he's hoping Carney's Liberal government will supply the federal money needed for a new megaproject the premier has dubbed 'Wind West.' The Progressive Conservative premier says the province is 'on the edge of a clean energy breakthrough' and he plans to support construction of enough offshore wind turbines to supply 27 per cent of Canada's total demand for electricity. The video was released with little fanfare on Monday, a day before Canada's provincial and territorial leaders met with Carney in Saskatoon, where the premiers pitched their wish lists for major projects. Nova Scotia has no offshore wind turbines, but the province is in the process of licensing projects that could produce up to five gigawatts of electricity by 2030. The premier's plan calls for private and government funding to pay for construction of enough turbines to generate 40 gigawatts of electricity — eight times greater than the current projects — as well as a cross-country electricity cable. Meanwhile, Houston's government has yet to release any details about how this plan would be rolled out, aside from what's in the video. 'Of course, there are questions,' Houston says. 'Big projects always raise questions. But we are committed to working with Nova Scotians to ensure this project will benefit everyone.'
