A falling tree in Venice injures a dozen people, including foreign tourists
MILAN (AP) — Foreign tourists were among a dozen people injured when a 50-year-old tree fell next to a bus stop in the Italian lagoon city of Venice on Monday, authorities said.
The oak tree fell on a group of people waiting in a shaded area at Piazzale Roma, the last stop for buses and taxis ferrying visitors to and from the lagoon city from the mainland, city officials said. It wasn't immediately clear why the tree fell.
The most seriously injured was a 30-year-old Italian woman, who was sitting on a wall near the tree with her two small children when the tree fell, Italian media reported. The woman was in critical condition with abdominal injuries, while her children weren't seriously injured and placed under psychological care, according to hospital officials.
Another Italian woman in her 50s also was in critical condition after suffering chest injuries.
A video from the scene showed the tree had snapped at the trunk, just above the roots.
'The tree was apparently healthy,' Francesca Zaccariotto, the city's top public works official, told the news agency ANSA. She added that the tree was monitored along with others in the city, and there had been no signs indicating a possible collapse.
A 60-year-old American was under observation for a head injury, a 70-year-old American suffered facial injuries, and two tourists from Eastern Europe suffered multiple bruises. Four other Italians were slightly injured.

Youngsters explore city vehicles at annual event
Over 2,000 Brantford-Brant residents attended the fifth annual Wheels on the Pavement event at the Brantford and District Civic Centre on Sunday, May 25, 2025. Hosted in partnership between the Downtown Central, East Ward Echo Place, Holmedale and Eagle Place Neighbourhood Associations, as well as the City of Brantford, the event was held in celebration of National Public Works Week. The event featured an assortment of around 50 city vehicles, big rigs, emergency response vehicles and jeeps from the Brantford Area Jeep and Off Road Club (BAJC) for parents and children alike to explore. 'We have a lot of Public Works employees and their vehicles here today, as well as several other vehicles from the City and local businesses too,' said Sylvia Collins, Chair of the Neighbourhood Alliance for the City of Brantford. 'It's just a great chance for everyone who sees these vehicles on a daily basis and who may be curious about what they look like inside, to see how they work.' Collins explained that the event was originally the brainchild of Jayme Wilson-Belore, and has been evolving ever since. 'Back then, she gathered the fellow neighbourhood hub chairs and said, 'what do you think of this idea?' and so at the time, they came together to get the first one off the ground and then we eventually partnered with the City,' she said. 'That's been a great partnership, because we've been able to be here at the Civic Centre, and we were able to get Public Works involved with all their vehicles so it's been really nice.' As the event got underway, it didn't take long for the youngsters and their parents to start lining up for a chance to explore the various vehicles, honk a few horns and pose for photos. Carolyn Dares, an arborist with the City's forestry department, said the event was a fantastic chance for children to interact with Public Works employees. 'This is a great, interactive opportunity for the kids to check out the vehicles but to also get introduced to different types of careers too,' she said. 'Of course, big trucks attract little children, so it's an amazing event for them; a lot of them just want to climb in and honk the horns, but a lot of them have come up and asked questions about the chainsaws and such too so that's been fun.' Throughout the event, families connected with the many different community partner booths to play games, pick up some goodies or acquire temporary tattoos. Many were sure to also get a balloon animal from Marco the Clown, and stop to watch the Just Dance Line Dancing Community entertain the crowd. A fan-favourite of the day was watching the Alpha Power Lifters pull a Ken's Towing 72,000-pound rotator truck. Organizers were also collecting non-perishables and school-safe snacks on behalf of Gifts of the Heart, a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to addressing the issues of food and clothing insecurity that faces young school-age children. Joe Doolittle and Kat Hill said it was their first time visiting the event. 'There's a lot of stuff going on here for sure, so that's nice,' said Doolittle. 'It's kind of cool too, because it gives them a safe way to come up and approach these vehicles and check them out. Why AC Milan Goalkeeper Mike Maignan Became A Chelsea Transfer Target

More Images) After a positive end to the 2024/25 campaign, Chelsea are not resting on their laurels. Seeking to make improvements to their squad, the Premier League club have identified AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan as a major transfer target. According to Sky Italia, a fee of around £25 million ($33.82 million) should be enough to convince the Rossoneri to sell the France international who is reportedly keen to make the move to the UEFA Conference League winners. Maignan is currently paid €4 million ($5.41 million) per season by Milan, but with his current deal set to expire in June 2026, the San Siro outfit know this summer is their last chance to profit from his exit. After emerging from the PSG youth setup Maignan has proven to be a serial winner, lifting the Ligue 1 title with Lille in 2020/21 after keeping an impressive 21 clean sheets in his 38 appearances. It was then that Milan came calling, the shot stopper joining the Italian giants in a €15 million ($20.29 million) switch to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma who had left for PSG that same summer. Maignan would have an instant impact on Stefano Pioli's side, keeping 17 clean sheets in 32 outings as the Rossoneri won the Serie A title for the first time since 2011 with the Coach clearly impressed by the man between the sticks. 'His communication and presence in the game impressed me,' Pioli told L'Equipe. 'I was sure he was a very good goalkeeper, but he turned out to be even better than I thought. He is very meticulous in preparing for games; he is a player who wants to continually grow. 'It is exhausting to train him, because he asks a lot. But it is also great, because he is motivated. When you're always the one, the coach, who has to motivate everyone else, there's always something missing after a while. And Mike, he doesn't lack anything.' The two would work together until Pioli's contract expired in June 2024, and the past year has seen managerial turmoil besiege Milan. Paulo Fonseca was sacked in December, while the end of the season saw the club decide to end Sergio Conceicao's tenure after an eighth-place finish. That meant no European football next term, but it has not diminished Maignan's quality as he made 98 saves across 37 league appearances as Milan also lost the Coppa Italia Final to Bologna. That defeat was analysed in this previous column, while only three goalkeepers – Alex Meret (Napoli), Mile Svilar (AS Roma) and Michele Di Gregorio (Juventus) managed more clean sheets than the Milan man's tally of 13. Now the Rossoneri Captain, figures from FotMob show Maignan saved 70.7% of the shots he faced and connected with 84.7% of his passes, highlighting his ability to quickly launch his side into attack. Those figures stack up well against Chelsea's current goalkeepers, with Robert Sanchez managing just 10 clean sheets, saving 73.6% of shots against him but seeing just 65.3% of his passes completed. There will of course need to be something of a clear out at Stamford Bridge, where Enzo Maresca finds himself overseeing a bloated squad that currently includes no fewer than five goalkeepers. In addition to Sanchez, there is backup Filip Jorgensen as well as promising 19-year-old Mike Penders, while Djordje Petrovic and Kepa Arrizabalaga – who spent last season on loan at Bournemouth – will both return from loan. Maignan would be an instant upgrade on that group and would also become Chelsea's oldest player, the 29-year-old bringing a wealth of experience to an exciting young squad that will be in the UEFA Champions League next term. With one European trophy already secured, Enzo Maresca and Chelsea are seeking to build on the fourth-place finish secured on the final day and believe Mike Maignan can help them do just that.
