US imposes sanctions on alleged sham Palestinian charities
The US Treasury Department on Tuesday imposed sanctions on five people and five entities across the Middle East, Africa and Europe, accusing them of being prominent financial supporters of Hamas 's military wing under the pretence of conducting humanitarian work in the Gaza Strip and around the world.
Those sanctioned include the Gaza-based charity Al Weam Charitable Society, which is accused of being controlled by Hamas, along with its executive director Muhammad Sami Muhammad Abu Marei.
Turkey -based charity Filistin Vakfi and its president Zeki Abdullah Ibrahim Ararawi were also targeted for sanctions. Charities in Algeria, the Netherlands and Italy were also targeted for sanctions.
The department is also targeting a separate charity linked to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, or PFLP.
A Treasury report on terrorist financing last year highlights how online crowdfunding is increasingly done under the guise of soliciting legitimate charitable donations, making it difficult to identify as terrorist financing.
Because the majority of crowdfunding activity is legitimate, 'this status can make it more difficult for law enforcement attempting to investigate potential (terrorist financing) cases with a crowdfunding and online fund-raising nexus', the report said.

Former US State Department official decries efforts to undermine movements showing support for Gaza
After resigning from the US State Department last year in protest against former president Joe Biden's policies on Gaza, Hala Rharrit is set to participate in the Global March to Gaza from Friday. About 4,000 people are expected to march from the Egyptian city of from Al Arish to the border with Gaza in Rafah. The trip is expected to take three days. The march comes after 12 activists attempted to sail to Gaza on board the Madleen aid boat, before they were intercepted and detained by Israel. The move by the volunteers, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and French politician Rima Hassan, was described as "performative", with Israel referring to it as the "selfie flotilla" because those on board posted videos on social media after beginning the journey to Gaza. They also recorded videos that were published online after they were detained by Israeli authorities. The Global March to Gaza has faced similar criticism. But, speaking to The National before travelling from Dubai to Cairo on Thursday, Ms Rharrit said that showed how some people were "desperate" to undermine public efforts to highlight the worsening humanitarian crisis in the enclave. "My response to the claim that this is performative is that it's an Israeli talking point that was crafted in an office where they tried to figure out how they can oppose this mass movement and make it look bad," she said. "This shows the desperation. They cannot refute it on matter of substance and deny that there's hunger on the ground in Gaza." In 2010, six vessels carrying activists and aid to Gaza were attacked by Israel in the Mediterranean, killing nine of those on board. The incident caused a deep rift between Turkey and Israel. Last month, a vessel set to carry activists and aid to Gaza was attacked by drones off the coast of Malta. Ms Thunberg was due to board the ship en route to the enclave. "We want to bring attention to the plight of Palestinians and the sad reality is that it takes people with a platform to do that," Ms Rharrit said. "The point is to continue building momentum and the movement for peace, justice, equality, human dignity and principles that everyone should rally for. This is not 'you versus me', but it is about human solidarity." The former US official also noted the change in perspective in the west towards Israel, but said governments have to follow the people. Israel "has spent millions trying to convince people that they're not killing civilians ... but I think the people in the world have woken up to the realities and learnt what's happening in Gaza", she added. The UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Norway this week imposed travel bans on Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, as well as freezing their assets. Ms Rharrit said the move reflected the growing anger towards Israel, but that more needed to be done. "The sanctioning of Smotrich and Ben-Gvir is a way of placating the citizens of the UK," she said. "Israel has been implicated in genocide. There should be a full-on arms embargo by any country that abides by international law."

Two Israeli ministers sanctioned by 5 Western democracies
For the first time, five Western democracies, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Norway, have sanctioned two far-right Israeli politicians, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, who are also ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government, for 'inciting extremist violence' against Palestinians in the West Bank. Former American President Joe Biden had also sanctioned Israeli settlers in West Bank violence, but these sanctions were lifted when President Donald Trump took office this January. In a joint statement, the five countries stated that Ben-Gvir and Smotrich 'have incited extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights. Extremist rhetoric advocated the forced displacement of Palestinians and the creation of new Israeli settlements is appalling and dangerous.' United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary David Lammy accused Ben-Gvir and Smotrich of 'inciting violence against Palestinian people for months and months' and 'encouraging egregious abuses of human rights.' Ben-Gvir and Smotrich remain defiant in the face of sanctions imposed by the five countries. Ben-Gvir, who belongs to the extreme religious right-wing said, 'We overcame Pharoah, we'll povercome Starmer's wall,' referring to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Smotrich, the finance minister, learned of the sanctions decision while inaugurating a new West Bank settlement. He said, 'We are determined to continue building.' Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called the sanctions 'outrageous'. On the other hand, Israeli human rights activist Eitay Mack describing the sanctions against Ben-Gvir and Smotrich as 'historic', elaborated, 'It means that the wall of immunity that Israeli politicians had has been broken. It's unbelievable that it took so long for Western governments to sanction Israeli politicians, and the fact that it's being done while Trump is president is quite amazing.' He said, 'It is a message to Netanyahu himself that he could be next.' The International Criminal Court (ICC) has already issued a warrant against Netanyahu and former Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant of human rights violation against the Palestinians in Gaza along with Hamas leaders. Netanyahu retorted saying that the ICC was biased. And the United States sanctioned four of the judges of the ICC for their action against Netanyahu. The four judges were ICC Second Vice President Reine Alapini-Gansou (Benin), Solomy Balungi Bossa (Uganda), Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza (Peru) and Beti Hohler (Slovenia). It had been the case that the whole countries faced sanctions as in the case of Russia after the Ukraine war, and Iran because of its alleged uranium enrichment programme. The question of course is how effective the sanctions against individuals are. In many, the countries can continue to do business with each other once the individuals have been named for sanctions. In May, Britain had suspended free trade talks with Israel. If Western democracies believe that Israeli violence in Gaza and in West Bank violated human rights of Palestinians, then the sanctions have to more than against individuals. There have to be economic sanctions against the erring country, and in this instance it happened to be Israel. Due to historical reasons where the whole of Europe had felt guilty of the Nazi genocide of European Jews, most countries have held themselves back acting against Israel. But Israel has stretched the patience of the European countries, and it had shown no restraint against the Palestinians, apart from refusing to implement the Oslo Accords which would have led the two-state solution of Palestine and Israel. Tel Aviv had been obstinate in its refusal to vacate West Bank as it did Gaza.
