Mariah Carey on new music, Rihanna, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and her lost grunge album

Independent11-04-2025

It may be hard to conceive of now, but there was once a lull in Mariah Carey's superstar career. In 2001, her film 'Glitter' was a commercial flop; the album that followed, 2002's introspective 'Charmbracelet,' was met with a muted response. She was at a crossroads.
And then everything changed. Carey released 'The Emancipation of Mimi' in 2005. It joined her athletic R&B-pop with synth-y hip-hop and fun, flirty, enduring hits — she was now only belting when she wanted to, thank you very much. She sounded free, as the title suggested, and the world embraced her for it once again.
On Saturday, the album turns 20. To celebrate, Carey is gearing up to release deluxe, expanded editions of the album on May 30, featuring bonus tracks, new remixes and much more — including the official release of 'When I Feel It,' a song fans have been waiting for since 2005. It was originally planned for 'The Emancipation of Mimi' but was ultimately shelved because of clearance issues with its sample of The Dynamic Superiors' 'Here Comes That Feeling.'
'These are new gems, as far as I'm concerned,' Carey says. 'It's exciting to me.'
Carey discussed 'The Emancipation of Mimi,' her recent nomination to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Rihanna and plans for new music with The Associated Press. The interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
AP: Has your relationship to 'The Emancipation of Mimi' changed over the years?
CAREY: It's still one of my favorite albums that I've done. And, you know, back then when it first came out, everybody was calling it a comeback album. ... I didn't really agree, because you never think you've gone anywhere. You know what I mean?
I just always really loved the songs and the performances. People seem to really be into it. And new fans came from that album.
AP: I hear a lot of creative freedom on that album. Do you think it revitalized your career?
CAREY: I do think it's got a fun feeling to it and it definitely feels free. I guess it sort of revitalized my career. I spent a while making that album ... working with some great people, some great collaborators. ... It was an experience that I'll never forget, creating that album.
AP: In June, you'll celebrate another anniversary. Your self-titled debut turns 35. When you think back on that time, did you envision this career?
CAREY: I don't know. I really was just so involved and entrenched in making the music and this new career that I was embarking on. And it was amazing. I mean, it's what I had wanted to do for my whole life. And then I was doing it.
AP: You're also a 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominee.
CAREY: That's a huge honor. I don't know if I'm going to win it, so I don't want to get too excited about it. So, I just want to say that, again, it's a huge honor and I guess I didn't expect it. I wasn't really thinking about it. And here we are.
AP: It seems like the Rock Hall has become more fluid in their definitions of genre over the years. Missy Elliott was inducted in 2023, for example.
CAREY: I don't really know if genre matters. I feel like people are more open to all different genres, much more than they were, you know? But I feel like a rock star sometimes.
AP: You know, after Dolly Parton was inducted, she released a rock album. If and when you are inducted, will you finally release your '90s grunge album? Fans have been waiting.
CAREY: I mean, I really want to, but I want to do videos, and I have just so many ideas for that.
I don't think I'll be able to pull it together by the summer (before the Rock Hall ceremony) but maybe, maybe I'll release a few songs from it.
AP: During your Christmas Time tour last holiday season, your children Monroe and Moroccan joined you onstage. They played guitar and drums; they were really rocking. Would you ever consider a family rock 'n' roll album?
CAREY: I would love to. They just have a lot of their own things that they're doing, and I don't want to force them to do anything.
AP: And at your final date in Brooklyn, Rihanna was in the front row of the audience. Would you ever work with her?
CAREY: I would love to. Did you see what happened? She wanted me to sign her breasts. I was trying to do it neatly, and it didn't come out right. So, I tried.
AP: Your last album of original music, 'Caution,' came out in 2018. It's been a minute! Are you working on a new album?
CAREY: I'm not supposed to talk about it. ... But I'm working on something. We won't say what it is, but something new.

Rock and Northern Irish partner Daryl Gurney claimed victory over the South Africans to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament. 2 Josh Rock was not happy with the antics of Devon Petersen during their World Cup clash Credit: Getty 2 The South African star is claimed to have poured his drink on Daryl Gurney's darts case Credit: Getty Rock, 24, was not pleased with the antics of Petersen during the match. Petersen was continuously talking during the match but it was his decision to pour some of his drink over Gurney's darts case that crossed the line. Rock hit out at the act after the match as he claimed the South African was "disrespectful". He said: "Devon started talking for the bull-up and it got me fired up and then he decided to pour a bit of a drink over Daryl's case. Gurney also slammed Petersen for his talk during the match and joked he would be a millionaire if he was paid per word. He said: "If Devon was paid for every single word, he would be an absolute millionaire because not once did he shut up. "Even in the bull pen he was at it and it annoyed him [Josh]. 'I think his tooth just fell out' - Sky Sports commentator convinced World Cup of Darts star suffered bizarre injury He added: "The only time he did not talk was whenever he was throwing, but that's Devon's game. "I told him [Rock] that because I played South Africa before and Devon did the exact same, I just blacked him out this time and it didn't bother me. "I shouldn't have messed about whenever I had those three darts at 32 and then I shouldn't have done a stupid one, a blind 180, because that's just stupid. "That's playing into Devon's hands, but at the same time, Devon loves it and he'll go back, and the first thing he'll say is 'Oh, you see what I did? I made Daryl do this'. 'But, no, glad to get the result. We're in the draw and that's the main thing that matters." The Northern Irish pair will now face neighbours Ireland in the quarter-finals of the tournament. Irish ace William O'Connor has already complained about the conditions at the World Cup of Darts. The Limerick-born thrower has insisted that it is "too hot" on the stage to get the best from the players. Elsewhere, Belgian star Dimitri van den Bergh has announced he will NOT be returning to darts full-time after his shock retirement.

Britney Spears deletes her Instagram after most bizarre rant yet

Britney Spears is no longer on Instagram – with some speculating her ex Sam Asghari's recent comments have something to do with it (Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP, File) Britney Spears has vanished from Instagram following what may be her most unfiltered rant to date. The pop icon's Instagram page, once a chaotic but direct line to her 40 million followers, disappeared on Friday, with her profile link now redirecting to a message that simply reads: 'Sorry, this page isn't available.' The departure from the platform comes without any warning or explanation, but just days after the Toxic singer unleashed a blistering tirade aimed at two of her ex-partners, accusing them of cruelty. 'I dated two f****** complete a**holes,' she wrote in a now-deleted post. 'I realized I loved their dogs more than them and I think it's because their dogs bowed to me every time I entered the room!!!' Without naming names, Spears, 43, described the men as 'cruel humans' who failed to acknowledge her or even hold her hand during their years-long relationships. Britney's Instagram departure comes after a rant about her exes (Picture: Instagram/@britneyspears) She has become known for her frequent Instagram posts, particularly those in which she dances (Picture: Instagram) 'I choose animals over people anyday!!! I'm so turned off by humanity and the way people have literally … I have no words!!!' Some have speculated that the rant was in response to a series of recent interviews given by her third ex-husband, actor and fitness trainer Sam Asghari, who spoke publicly about the highs and lows of their short-lived marriage. The couple split in 2023 after just 14 months, with Asghari recently admitting their very public relationship boosted his career, but also complicated his life. 'When you're in such a public relationship, that gives you that platform,' Asghari told Page Six. 'It sort of gave me that platform for who I am.' He also acknowledged that being known primarily as Spears' husband made some casting directors hesitate, calling the experience 'a double-edged sword.' Asghari recently spoke out on how his marriage to Britney helped and hurt his career (Picture: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic) The pop singer has made sudden exits from Instagram several times in the past(Picture:) In a separate podcast interview earlier this month, Asghari claimed he had pushed for a prenuptial agreement before marrying Spears in 2022, to protect her amid what he described as a lifetime of being exploited. 'It's very sad,' he said. 'I wanted to make sure that I'm the person that didn't do that.' Fans quickly connected the dots between Spears' angry outburst and Asghari's recent comments, though she never named him directly – nor her other unnamed ex, speculated to be one of her previous high-profile partners. Spears, who shares sons Sean Preston, 19, and Jayden James, 18, with second husband Kevin Federline, has deactivated her Instagram multiple times in recent years. Often, she's gone dark following criticism, media attention, or what appears to be emotional distress. Whether this latest exit from Instagram is temporary or a longer-term break remains to be seen. The Who legend Roger Daltrey, 81, reveals boozy knighthood celebrations

Legendary rock singer Sir Roger Daltrey has revealed he will be celebrating being named in the King's Birthday Honours list in the best way possible. The Who's long-time frontman, 81, formed the iconic band with friends Pete Townshend and John Entwistle in north-west London in 1964. Before long, they were one of the biggest bands of the 60s and 70s Mod era and have since sold millions of copies of classic albums like Tommy and Who's Next. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and, despite only releasing two albums since 1983, remain one of the most popular bands on the planet. So much so that Sir Roger, who launched the Teenage Cancer Trust Royal Albert Hall concerts, has now been made a knight bachelor for services to charity and music. He told PA: 'It's strange, it's an experience that I've never had before, I'm very humbled by it. But equally, pride isn't something you wear on the outside – it's something that you wear in your heart. 'This sits very well in my heart because it's for the charity – it is for the music and the music I've had the joy of giving it out there – how lucky was I?' When asked how he would be celebrating being made a knight bachelor, the rocker replied: 'With a bottle of plonk.' 'Plonk' is a slang term used by Brits and Australians of a certain vintage to refer to cheap wine, with its origins apparently dating back all the way to the 1930s. Sir Roger said he was happy to be honoured for his charity work, which will see him remain an honorary patron of Teenage Cancer Trust – the Cure frontman Robert Smith will take over the concert curation next year. He continued: 'It's kind of weird, but I am deeply honoured to get this, especially for the charity for the Teenage Cancer Trust, and I accept it on their behalf really, because this honour is really for all unsung heroes.' The first Teenage Cancer Trust show in 2000 raised more than £12million in ticket sales and generated further revenue from a concert film and CD. Afterwards, Sir Roger was given a humanitarian award in 2003 from Time magazine and, in subsequent years, the band continued to support other charities as well. More Trending Asked whether he could have foreseen his knighthood during the band's early days, Sir Roger added: 'No, no, I mean, you've got to remember, we came from post-war England, I was born in an air raid. 'We were born with talent, that's for sure, you can't have the success we've had and not have some kind of talent, even if it's for cock-ups. 'So we got lucky, we were right place, right time, we had the right chemistry.' Got a story?
