MOH calls for joint effort to tackle youth sexual literacy

The Sun25-04-2025

KOTA BHARU: Addressing issues related to reproductive health education and sexual literacy, particularly among the youth, requires a comprehensive approach involving multiple ministries and agencies, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
He stressed that the effort was not solely the responsibility of the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) but required the mobilisation of the entire government through a whole-of-government approach.
'This is not just the MOH's responsibility, but also that of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), and the Ministry of Youth and Sports
'MOH will adopt a whole-of-government approach to ensure that education on reproductive health and comprehensive awareness is implemented in an integrated manner,' he told reporters after attending the Jom Sihat @ Kota Lama Mini Carnival here today.
Dzulkefly also stressed that strong support from various parties was crucial to ensure that the implementation of this agenda was not limited to Kelantan but extended nationwide.
'I am not saying that the MOH will be the only agency in charge. Instead, we want this issue to be addressed collectively. The MOH is ready to mobilise its resources and experts in the field of reproductive health education,' he said.
He said this when asked to comment on a media report on April 9, in which Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat stated that the number of rape and incest cases in Kelantan had increased, but investigations showed that many were cases of consensual sex.
Mohd Yusoff revealed that 252 cases were reported in 2024, compared to 206 cases in 2023, reflecting an increase of 22.3 percent. He added that what was more worrying was that some of those involved were as young as 10 years old.
Dzulkefly said that the key to the successful implementation of this initiative was equipping the community with knowledge and awareness so they could enhance their self-control and strengthen their moral values.
Meanwhile, he said that the MOH provided assistance to victims of sexual crimes under 18 through the One Stop Crisis Centre (OSCC), which was available at every hospital nationwide.
He said that the OSCC was established to provide comprehensive services to victims of abuse and rape.

Health Ministry: New Covid-19 vaccines now available

PETALING JAYA: A new batch of Covid-19 vaccines is now available, says the Health Ministry. In a post on X, it said the vaccines are available at government health clinics. 'For your information, the vaccines are new and are not from the old stocks.' The ministry posted on June 5 that the vaccines are effective against the latest variants. It added that the mRNA vaccines are from Pfizer Inc. The post has since been reposted by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. Dzulkefly said in a separate post on X that the highly transmissible NB.1.8.1 variant has not been detected yet in Malaysia. This variant, also known as Nimbus, has been identified as the cause of the resurgence of cases in India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom. In Malaysia, the JN.1 is the dominant variant currently making up 17% of the variants detected. This is followed by XEC (7.9%), KP.3 (5.2%), KP.3.1.1 & LB.1 (3.2%) and LF.7 & LP.8.1 (0.65%). Dzulkefly said each country has different dominant variants; for example, the JN.1 in Thailand (63.92%), LF.7 & NB.1.8 (66%) in Singapore and the NB.1.8.1 (XDV subvariant) (12.5%) in China. 'Globally, the top three variants are predominantly LP.8.1 (34%), JN.1 and its related sub-variants (22%) and XEC (16%). 'The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the global risk from JN.1 to be low, but its high transmission rate may cause more cases, especially in winter or where immunity is low,' he said. Dzulkefly advised the public to maintain good personal hygiene, wear face masks when unwell or in crowded environments, and receive vaccinations. Thailand has reported over 28,000 new Covid-19 cases within the span of two days. India has experienced a sudden increase in cases since late May, with the number of active infections now exceeding 5,000.

Sabah Umno urges action on hospital parking woes

Published on: Saturday, June 07, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 07, 2025 Text Size: Noraini (left) appealed to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (right) to seriously consider constructing multi-story parking facilities at HWKKS as a long-term solution to the burden faced by many patients and their families. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Umno Wanita Chief Datuk Noraini Idris wants the Health Minister to address the parking shortage at the Sabah Women and Children's Hospital (HWKKS) in Likas, describing the situation as a matter of human dignity rather than mere convenience. The former senator said she received numerous complaints from pregnant women forced to walk long distances in their condition due to inadequate parking facilities at the hospital. Advertisement 'I cannot imagine how a mother carrying a small child feels or an anxious husband accompanying his wife who is about to give birth, having to circle around looking for parking while the life and health of their loved ones are at stake,' Noraini said in a statement, here, Thursday. 'This is no longer a matter of comfort. This is a matter of dignity, a matter of humanity,' she said. She cited cases where heavily pregnant women have had to park as far away as the Kingfisher commercial area and walk to the hospital in hot weather, rain or even while experiencing labour pains. She noted that the parking issue extends beyond the HWKKS' to nearly all major hospitals in Sabah, including Queen Elizabeth Hospital I and II, Tawau Hospital and Sandakan Hospital. Advertisement Noraini appealed to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad to seriously consider constructing multi-story parking facilities at HWKKS as a long-term solution to the burden faced by many patients and their families. She also called on the Sabah Government to step forward and comprehensively resolve the issue. 'Building multi-storey parking is not just about physical infrastructure. It is a symbol of care and humanity,' she said, adding that Sabah women have been patient for too long and it is time their voices are heard and needs properly addressed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Fahmi says MCMC to monitor online vape sales on Facebook, WhatsApp amid rising health concerns

PUTRAJAYA, June 5 — The Communications Ministry, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will monitor online sales of vape and e-cigarette products following increased bans on vape use in several states and concerns over the presence of synthetic substances in these products. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the issue was raised during today's Cabinet meeting and is being reviewed by the Health Ministry (MoH). 'At the same time, I will direct MCMC to examine the online sale of such products. We have found that these sales are largely conducted on platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. 'Any enforcement action will certainly involve the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN),' he told a weekly press conference here today. Fahmi said while vape-related issues fall under the Health Ministry's jurisdiction, the Communications Ministry will monitor the use of social media as a sales platform, particularly for e-cigarette products. 'Insya-Allah, MCMC will prepare a report on this matter, and the Communications Ministry will present it to the Cabinet for further discussion,' he said. He also reaffirmed the Communications Ministry's commitment to working closely with MoH and KPDN to ensure a safer internet environment, particularly for children and families, by addressing issues such as vape and e-cigarette advertisements. — Bernama
