West Indies take on Australia in the opening Test of an exciting three-match series at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, from June 25. The Calypso Kings face off against the mighty Australians as the two teams kick off their campaigns in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.
West Indies finished eighth in the previous WTC after winning just three of their thirteen Tests, losing eight. But the Roston Chase-led side will be taking confidence from their most recent Test bout with the Kangaroos, having beaten them at the Gabba early last year in one of Test cricket's most famous upsets.
After losing the marquee final at Lord's against South Africa, Australia finished runners-up in their WTC 2023-25 campaign. Pat Cummins' men were considered favourites to lift the coveted crown with 13 wins in their previous 19 Tests, but got upstaged by the spirited Proteas at Lord's.
They now enter a rebuilding phase with much of the scrutiny reserved for their batting unit following the axing of struggling Marnus Labuschagne.

'Less Drama...': Sitanshu Kotak Credited For India's Batting Improvement After BGT Disaster

Last Updated: Sitanshu Kotak was appointed as the India batting coach earlier this year. During India's forgettable Australia tour of 2024-25, during which they suffered a 1-3 series defeat, saw them score a combine three centuries across five Tests. On their England tour, which got underway earlier this month, they have racked up five centuries in the series opening Headingley Test alone. Former Gujarat cricketer Priyank Panchal feels that India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak is playing a vital role in the 'visible shift". Kotak was roped in by the BCCI in January this year after conducting a review of the team's dipping performances that saw them crashing out from the race for the ICC World Test Championship final. In a lengthy post on X (formerly Twitter), the recently retired Panchal explained how Kotak is implementing his deep knowledge of Indian cricket to help transform the national team. 'There's been a visible shift in India's batting temperament since that forgettable tour of Australia. Less drama, more clarity. Less noise, more intent," Panchal wrote. 'And quietly playing a pivotal role in that transition is Sitanshu Kotak, a man who never grabbed headlines as a player, but whose deep understanding of the Indian cricketing psyche is finally making headlines for the right reasons," he added. His career spanned 20 years, and he retired in 2013. 'Kotak wasn't a flashy name on the circuit, but in domestic cricket, he was a titan. Someone who knew how to score runs in Rajkot heat or on a green top in Mohali. That exposure, to Indian conditions, temperaments, and dressing room moods, is his real asset," Panchal continued. Since retirement, Kotak has pivoted to coaching. He's been the batting coach at the National Cricket Academy and also served as the head coach in several India A tours besides. 'His (Kotak's) role in the India A system earlier gave him an early peek into the next-gen stars. Now, as a batting coach for the senior team, he's doing something rarer by understanding the personality of each batter and tailoring inputs accordingly. That's coaching with empathy. That's coaching with context," Panchal wrote. 'Sometimes, the best mentors aren't the ones who have conquered global stages, but those who have toiled in the trenches and know the system inside-out. Kotak's rise reminds us that internal talent, when nurtured, retained, and empowered, can become the most valuable asset during transitions," he concluded. First Published: June 24, 2025, 16:05 IST

Shamar Joseph targeted in brutal swipe regarding remarks on Konstas: 'You've delivered cr**, you're not Curtly Ambrose'

After facing a loss in the World Test Championship 2023-2025 final against South Africa, Pat Cummins-led Australia are gearing up for a new cycle, and their first Test is an away series against the West Indies. Ahead of the first Test in Barbados, both Australia and the West Indies have been playing mind games, and it is quite surprising to see even the hosts trading barbs at their opponents. Ian Healy tore into Shamar Joseph for the latter's remarks on opening batter Sam Konstas. (REUTERS) Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Ian Healy has not taken too kindly to Shamar Joseph's comments regarding opening batter Sam Konstas. Ahead of the first Test, Shamar Joseph, while speaking to the media, warned the young Australian, saying, "Just look out, that's all." Australia are without Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne for the series against the West Indies. Young opener Sam Konstas, who had made his debut in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is ready to open the batting for Australia. Heading into the high-profile three-match series, all eyes are on Shamar Joseph, following his exploits in the Gabba Test against Australia in January 2024. Speaking to SENQ Breakfast co-host Corey Parker, Ian Healy reacted to Joseph's comments directed towards Konstas, saying the pacer has better things to worry about than trading barbs at Sam Konstas. "He's had a terrible year since he went through us at the Gabba. He had this toe that had blown up and didn't think he could play, he got out of his injury bed after someone said just come down and try it, and then he realised 'oh you can play with pain. Shamar has come out today and said to Konstas' just look out and watch what is coming'," said Healy. So he better improve, that's what I'm saying in the dressing room. He's got real trouble. You're not Curtly Ambrose, champ," he added. Marnus Labuschagne dropped from Test team The Australian selectors have dropped Marnus Labuschagne from the squad following his underwhelming returns in the longest format. However, Healy believes the right-hander has it in him to make a turnaround and reclaim his position in the playing XI. "They're still, you know, recognising his value, and they (the selectors) expect him to work his way through it. He's only 30/31. He's got time. I would certainly put it up as a suggestion, Marnus to Glamorgan and give him a lot of breathing space and time to really," said Healy. "Now that it's done, you know, the uncertainty whether I'm gonna get dropped or whether I'm playing. That's probably been the last 6 months for him. Now he can breathe. Now get your technique right and get playing," he added. Speaking about Konstas, he made his Test debut in the Melbourne Test against India. He immediately got under Virat Kohli's skin, as the latter even shoulder-bumped him during the first session of play. He was involved in a heated exchange with Jasprit Bumrah during Day 1 of the Sydney Test. Australia will now take on the West Indies in the first Test of the five-match series in Barbados, beginning June 25.
