Space tourists complete first-ever flight around Earth's poles
A wealthy bitcoin entrepreneur and three fellow adventurers plunged back to Earth aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule Friday, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern California to close out the first crewed flight around Earth's poles.
Three-and-a-half days after launch Monday from the Kennedy Space Center — and after 55 passes above the North and South Poles — the Crew Dragon "Resilience" fired its braking rockets at 11:26 a.m. EDT and slammed back into the discernible atmosphere about 25 minutes later.
Enduring heat shield temperatures up to 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit, the spacecraft rapidly slowed down, deployed four big red-and-white parachutes and settled to an on-target 16-mph splashdown at 12:19 p.m.
SpaceX crews deployed nearby rushed to the gently bobbing capsule and rigged it for a lift onto the company's recovery ship Shannon.
In the first test of its kind, the crew exited the craft on their own, demonstrating the ability to get out of a Crew Dragon without help from recovery crews.
Unlike crews returning from long-duration flights to the International Space Station who are carried out of their capsules, mission commander Chun Wang and his three companions were able to lift emergency gear up and out of the hatch before climbing out themselves.
While they moved a bit gingerly after three-and-a-half days in weightlessness, Chun, Norwegian cinematographer Jannicke Mikkelsen, Rabea Rogge, a German robotics specialist, and Australian polar guide Eric Philips were all smiles as they greeted support personnel and were escorted into the recovery ship for initial medical checks.
Chun is a Chinese-born citizen of Malta who lives mostly in the extreme north of Norway, most recently in Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean where he first met his crewmates, all veterans of polar expeditions.
"We ... all met on Svalbard, and we love the ice," Chun posted on X during the flight. "The mission was planned when I lived there, and we fly polar because, in an ISS-like orbit, we are unable to see where we live. From this perspective, the mission has perfectly achieved its goal."
Chun said before launch he planned to be on the lookout for Antarctic research stations, but Mikkelsen said during the flight that "unlike previously anticipated, from 460 km above, it is only pure white, no human activity is visible."
Neither Chun nor his crewmates are licensed pilots. While Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin has launched non-pilot crews to the edge of space in sub-orbital New Shepard flights, no crew has flown to orbit without at least one member with aviation expertise or astronaut experience.
But the Crew Dragon is highly automated and can be controlled from the ground when necessary. SpaceX viewed the Fram2 flight as a stepping stone toward opening the door for more non-professionals to fly to orbit.
Chun, an avid world traveler and polar visitor, paid SpaceX an undisclosed amount to charter Resilience for the trip to polar orbit, SpaceX's third privately funded civilian space tourism flight.
The mission was named Fram2 in honor of a 19th century sailing ship — Fram, or "forward" in Norwegian — that carried arctic explorers to the poles. A small piece of the original ship's teak decking was carried into space aboard the Crew Dragon.
"My own journey has been shaped by lifelong curiosity and a fascination with pushing boundaries," Chun said before launch. "As a kid, I used to stare at a blank white space at the bottom of a world map and wonder what's out there.
"Curiosity eventually took me across the continent and to the southern most tip of Earth in 2021, and also the North Pole in 2023. ... Fram2 isn't just about going to space. It's about pushing boundaries, sharing knowledge ... and we hope our mission will further inspire later people to do the same."
The crew planned to carry out 22 experiments during the flight, ranging from filming auroral displays from orbit to testing compact exercise equipment for use in smaller spacecraft, growing oyster mushrooms in microgravity and taking the first X-rays in space.
Along with three high-end professional cameras, the crew was equipped with multiple laptops and tablets, a ham radio "and even an X-ray generator, which we'll use to capture the first-ever X-ray image of the human body in space — something crucial for future long-duration missions to Mars and beyond," Chun posted on X.
Throughout the flight, the crew posted spectacular videos, including a timelapse view of Earth below as the Crew Dragon sailed over Antarctica all the way to the North Pole, making the trip from one pole to the other every 46 minutes.
"Proud to be able to bring to space some incredible cameras and lenses capturing the first images of the Arctic and Antarctic shot by humans from space," Mikkelsen posted on X. "These videos are BIG in file size and we look forwards to sharing them with you post-mission splashdown."
Another video showed the entire state of Florida and the southeastern United States. Zooming in on the Kennedy Space Center, Chun marveled "there's our launch pad. Oh my God!"

The Sun's Fury Is Making SpaceX Satellites Plummet From The Sky
The Sun is the angriest it's been in a while – and it's taking out that rage on the thousands of tiny satellites that make up SpaceX's Starlink fleet. A new analysis of Starlink satellites falling from the sky has revealed a distinct pattern: as the Sun escalated towards the peak of its activity cycle between 2020 and 2024, so too did the number of satellite falls as a direct result of that activity. A team of scientists, led by space physicist Denny Oliveira of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, studied 523 Starlink satellites that fell back down towards Earth during that time, and found a clear link with the Sun. "We clearly show that the intense solar activity of the current solar cycle has already had significant impacts on Starlink reentries," they write in their paper. "This is a very exciting time in satellite orbital drag research, since the number of satellites in low-Earth orbit and solar activity are the highest ever observed in human history." The solar cycle is an 11-year cycle of fluctuations in the Sun's activity that centers around a periodic magnetic reversal of the solar poles. It primarily manifests as sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections that steadily increase towards solar maximum (when the poles flip), and then wanes to a minimum before inching back up again. It's just the Sun's normal way to be, and we're currently at the peak of the 25th cycle since we started keeping track of them. It's actually been a pretty strong cycle; not the strongest on record, but still displaying much more solar activity than scientists predicted at its beginning. This means that its effects on Earth have been pretty strong. You may have noticed a lot of aurora activity; that's the effect of solar particles pummeling Earth's atmosphere, borne by coronal mass ejections and the solar wind. But the increase in solar activity has another, less noticeable effect: the increase in solar ejections buffeting the upper atmosphere heats it up significantly. We don't notice it here on the surface. But the increased energy puffs up the atmosphere – enough to increase the amount of drag on spacecraft in low-Earth orbit. This means they cannot hold course at their current trajectory, and need to make adjustments to remain in the sky. To be clear, all satellites in low-Earth orbit are vulnerable to the increase in drag associated with solar activity. To date, however, SpaceX has launched 8,873 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit, of which 7,669 remain operational. These sheer numbers provide an excellent laboratory for studying the effect of solar maximum on satellites in low-Earth orbit. "Here, we use … Starlink orbital data to perform a superposed epoch analysis of orbital altitudes and velocities in order to identify impacts caused by storms with different intensities," the researchers write. "The Starlink reentries coincide with the rising phase of solar cycle 25, a period with increasing solar activity." SpaceX first started launching Starlink satellites in 2019, and the first atmospheric reentries began in 2020. Initially these figures stayed relatively low. There were just two in 2020. In 2021, 78 satellites fell; 99 in 2022, and 88 in 2023. But then 2024 saw a whopping increase – a total of 316 Starlink satellites fell out of the sky. The researchers grouped these reentries according to the geomagnetic conditions at the time – that is, how powerfully solar activity was affecting Earth. Oddly, some 72 percent of all reentries occurred during weak geomagnetic conditions, not the powerful geomagnetic storms. This, the researchers found, was because of the cumulative effect of drag over the rising period of the solar cycle. Rather than being taken down in one fell swoop, the orbits of these satellites degraded subtly over time. Meanwhile, the satellites that did fall during strong geomagnetic conditions fell faster than those that fell in weaker conditions. It's fascinating stuff, actually. We don't have a lot of data on this phenomenon; the work of Oliveira and his colleagues may help design strategies to mitigate the orbital decay induced by solar activity, keeping satellites in low-Earth orbit where they should be (and not, for example, smacking into other satellites and triggering a nasty Kessler cascade). "Our results are promising because they point in the direction of using short-cadence Starlink data (precise orbit determination, neutral mass density, ram direction area, drag coefficient) for the improvement of orbital drag models during geomagnetic storms, particularly during extreme events," the researchers write. The paper has been accepted for publication in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Science, and is available on arXiv. United Airlines Turns Off Starlink Access Amid Interference Concerns

United Airlines' plans to retrofit its entire regional fleet with Starlink connectivity have hit a roadblock, at least temporarily. United first started rolling out Starlink access using a free-with-ads model in May, becoming one of a select club—including Hawaiian Airlines and the boutique air carrier JSX—to offer flyers access to SpaceX's satellite broadband service. Its speed and performance proved a hit with PCMag when it debuted, and United announced plans to install Starlink in its entire two-cabin regional fleet by the end of 2025. However, Starlink has been turned off on almost two dozen Embraer E175 regional jets, according to air industry publication The Points Guy. The issue stems from static interference between the antennas that pilots use to communicate with air traffic controllers and Starlink's antennas. United confirmed the reports in a statement, saying that this type of radio interference is 'fairly common with any new airline Wi-Fi provider' and that the issues are not a flight safety risk. 'We expect the service to be back up and running on these aircraft soon,' a spokesperson said. According to The Points Guy, roughly a third of the impacted planes have already had a fix applied. United doesn't expect to cancel any flights as a result of the issue and will instead wait until each aircraft's scheduled maintenance to fix the interference issue. Though Starlink may be off the table for many domestic fliers, at least in the short term, United has introduced new ways for travelers to distract themselves in recent weeks. The Chicago-based carrier announced earlier this week that it's bringing the streaming-audio service Spotify to the on-demand entertainment displays of over 680 of its aircraft, offering 'specially curated versions of Spotify's most popular playlists.' The new Spotify integration will replace the 'Audio' option on the home-screen menu of those displays.

President Trump on Saturday said tech billionaire Elon Musk will face 'serious consequences' if he moves to support Democratic political candidates in any upcoming elections, following a public rift between the two in recent days. In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump said Musk 'will have to pay the consequences' if he backs opponents to GOP lawmakers who support the GOP's 'big, beautiful bill.' 'He'll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that,' he told the outlet. The president's remarks comes after he signaled his bromance with Musk is over as a tiff about the GOP megabill spiraled into an all-out brawl on social media. Musk went so far as to allege that Trump is named in the Jeffrey Epstein files, backed a call for impeachment and suggested he would have lost the presidential election without his support. Trump in response threatened to cancel federal government contracts for Musk's companies while calling the Tesla and SpaceX CEO 'crazy.' Prior to the implosion of the duo's relationship, the tech mogul indicated he would roll back his political spending in upcoming elections. 'In terms of political spending, I'm going to do a lot less in the future,' Musk said last month. 'If I see a reason to do political spending in the future, I will do it,' he added. 'I do not currently see a reason.' The billionaire became one of the most powerful forces in U.S. politics after he threw his support behind Trump's reelection bid last summer, spending at least $250 million. He soon became a central figure in the White House as he advised the Department of Government Efficiency and the administration's efforts to reduce the size and scope of the federal government. Musk left the administration late last month as he voiced opposition to the House-crafted GOP spending bill over its potential impact on the national debt.
